Chapter 107: What If?
CALEB
The creature burst into the clearing, towering massively over us. It let out a roar, a sound that thundered through the forest.
'On three," Marcus said, his voice low. 'One…two…"
'Three!" I shouted, charging forward.
The creature swiped at me with its massive claws, and I dodged, rolling to my feet and slashing at its side with the dagger. The blade barely made a mark, but it was enough to draw the creature's attention.
'Over here, you ugly bastard!" Marcus shouted, swinging his sword.
The creature turned, snarling, and lunged at Marcus. I took the opportunity to move in, striking at its exposed flank. The creature whipped around and knocked me off my feet with a swipe of its tail.
'Caleb!"
'I'm fine!" I grunted, pushing myself to my feet. 'Just keep hitting it."
We moved in tandem, striking and dodging, trying to wear the creature down. But it was relentless, its attacks fast and powerful. My strength was waning, and I could feel the exhaustion setting in. We couldn't keep this up for much longer.
'Marcus! We need a plan!"
'I'm thinking!" Marcus replied, narrowly avoiding a bite. 'Just…hold on!"
The creature lunged at Marcus, its jaws snapping shut inches from his face. He ducked under its attack, swinging his sword upward and catching it across the jaw. The creature howled in pain, rearing back.
'That's it!" Marcus shouted. 'Keep it off balance!"
Caleb nodded, moving in to strike. I aimed for the creature's legs. My dagger sank into the thick muscle of its thigh, and it let out a roar of pain, staggering back.
'Now, Marcus!" I said. 'Go for the neck!"
Marcus didn't hesitate. He moved in, his sword raised high. But before he could strike, the creature whipped around, its massive tail slamming into him and sending him flying across the clearing.
'Marcus!"
My blood ran cold.
Marcus hit the ground hard, his sword clattering out of his hand. He lay still, motionless.
'Damn it." I muttered, turning back to the creature. This beast was twice my size and three times as strong. But I couldn't give up…not yet.
'Come on." I muttered. 'Come and get me."
The creature let out a snarl, its yellow eyes narrowing. It lunged at me, opening its jaws wide. I ducked to the side, slashing as it passed. The blade cut deep, drawing blood, but the creature didn't slow.
I barely had time to react before it was on me again, claws slashing through the air. I blocked the attack with my dagger, the force of the blow nearly knocking the weapon off. I stumbled back, trying to keep my footing, but the creature was relentless.
Marcus, Come on, man. I need you.
But Marcus didn't move. I could see blood trickling from a cut on his forehead, his body still not moving.
The creature lunged again, and I barely managed to dodge, rolling to the side. I couldn't keep this up. Not alone.
'Think, Caleb, Think."
I searched around the clearing, looking for anything I could use. My gaze fell on Marcus's sword, lying a few feet away. The faint blue glow of magic still lingering around it. If I could just get to it…
The creature roared, charging at me again. I waited until the last second, then dove to the side, rolling to my feet and sprinting toward the sword. The creature was behind me, I could feel its hot breath on my neck.
I reached the sword, grabbing it and spinning around just as the creature lunged. I raised it, channeling every ounce of strength I had left into the blade. The blue glow flared, brightening, and the sword slashed through the air, striking the creature across the neck.
There was a blinding flash of light, a sound like thunder, and then silence.
I blinked, clearing my vision. The creature lay on the ground, its massive body still. The forest was quiet, and the only sound was my ragged breathing.
I exhaled, dropping the sword. My legs gave out, and I collapsed to my knees, allowing the exhaustion take over.
'Marcus." I muttered, rushing to his side.
He was starting to stir, groaning softly. I crawled closer to him, and placed a hand on his shoulder.
'Hey." My voice was hoarse. 'You okay?"
He opened his eyes, blinking up at me. 'What…what happened?"
'We won." I replied, flashing him a tired smile. 'Thanks to you."
Thanks to my quick wittedness, but yeah, let's go with that.
He chuckled weakly. 'Glad I could help."
I helped him sit up, and we leaned against the tree for support. We just sat there, catching our breath. The forest around was quiet and still.
'We should get moving." Marcus said after a while, his voice soft. 'We still have four more ingredients to find."
I nodded, but the thought of getting back on my feet seemed impossible. 'Yeah. But let's…rest for a minute. Just a minute."
I certainly could not walk anymore.
He nodded, half smiling.
I crashed backwards, slowly drifting into the darkness.
The night was still young, and our journey was far from over. But for now, we were alive. And that was enough.
HELENA.
The night was cool with a light breeze rustling through the leaves, carrying the smell of damp earth and the end of summer. The stars were scattered like diamonds across the dark sky, and the nearly full moon cast a soft, silvery light over the small, old townhouse. Inside, things were anything but calm.
I sat on the edge of my bed, looking down at my hands. They shook a bit, showing how anxious I felt inside. I had faced many tough situations before, but this one was different. I was about to enter a world where one mistake could reveal me as a human pretending to be a werewolf. The spell Luna had cast on me was strong, but not perfect. If we weren't careful, if I wasn't careful, everything could fall apart.
The door creaked open, and Luna came in. Her presence was comforting and strong. Even in the dim light, her features were clear, and her eyes had a faint glow from her wolf side. She looked at me for a moment, her gaze softening a little. 'How are you doing?"
I forced a smile, though it didn't reach my eyes. 'I've been better."
Luna walked over and sat next to me, the mattress sinking a bit under her weight. 'I know this isn't easy. Going to LunaVille… it's dangerous, even for us. But we're not going in without preparation."
I nodded, but my mind was still racing. I looked down at my hands again, noticing how small and delicate they seemed compared to Luna's. 'I just… keep thinking about all the things that could go wrong. What if the spell doesn't hold? What if someone realizes I'm not really one of them? What if—"
