Chapter 67: What Happened Between you two?
AARON.
Luna refused to speak to me for the rest of the night. I tried apologizing for my outburst, but I only received one word, 'Leave". Guilt gnawed at my chest as I sat alone in the living room.
The house was dark and quiet, with the wall clock being the only source of sound.
I glanced outside the windows, listening for any movement. Nothing. Just the faint sounds of crickets and my own melancholy.
I had two weeks.
Two weeks, to either run and die, or stay and fight. Or just surrender and go live the life I never wanted.
The problem with certain people, especially elders, is that they never actually saw the point of view from someone else's angle. They always believed they were right, and I always felt like this was the main reason governments don't do well.
The old men and women in power almost always never accepted change.
Good change, which would benefit everyone.
I sighed, glancing at the clock. 3am sharp. I still couldn't sleep. Oh well, maybe some TV would help. I searched for the remote, finding it within a few seconds.
Around 10 minutes later, I sighed in disappointment. None of the channels were showing anything good.
'Aaron?" A soft voice sounded behind me. I froze, turning off the TV.
Helena stood in the doorway, eyes wide and afraid. I could smell her fear. My ears perked up, and I had this innate urge to hug her. Reassure her that we would be fine.
'Helena…what happened?" She looked so pale it hurt me. She was trembling too.
'A…another nightmare." She whispered.
'Come here." I beckoned. She walked slowly towards me, and I stood up, covering the remaining strides. She fell into my chest, and sobbed silently.
'I'm tired of all this Aaron. I'm tired." She whispered.
'Shhh, we will be fine. We will all be fine. Okay? Look at me." I tilted her head upwards, locking my gaze with hers. Her eyes were red rimmed. She had been crying for an awfully long time.
I wanted to kiss her so badly.
‘So just do it then.' My inner wolf suggested.
I wish I could, but for some reason, I didn't. I hated the rational part of me sometimes.
Instead, I planted a soft kiss on her forehead, and carried her back to her room. I tucked her in, and moved to leave. She pulled my hands back towards her.
'Please, don't….I don't know if I can stay here alone." Her voice was a harsh whisper, and it made my stomach churn. She was in pain.
'Okay, I'll stay. Don't worry your head, I'm here. I'll stay okay?" I repeated the words until she fell soundly asleep, holding my hands.
I stared at her face in the darkness. I desired, loved, cared, and cherished this woman. I would rip apart anything that dared or threatened to keep us from each other.
Her brown hair hung loosely over her face, and I used my free arm to brush off the strands of hair that fell over her face. Her lips were slightly parted, and her breathing was steady.
I wanted this moment to last forever. But as morning approached, I felt the urge to let her go. I didn't know how she'd react if she found out she basically begged me to stay with her during the night.
I left her room, closing the door softly. It was around 6am. She still had a few hours to sleep properly. While I, on the other hand, was probably not getting any sleep for a while.
I sat outside on the porch, soaking in the morning misty air. My whole life had been filled with so many ups and downs, from my birth right up to this point. I had become so used to it, but it was tasking.
I spotted a familiar pair of eyes watching me from inside. I glanced at Luna, whose eyes were dark and obsidian. The stare sent shivers down my spine. She was probably still very angry at me.
I sighed, and got up to meet her inside.
'Luna. Can we talk?"
Silence.
'I'm sorry for what I said. I was just pissed off." It was the least I could say. She was in the wrong too for using magic on Helena. Without her consent.
Luna shot me a glance, and left the room without another word.
I felt helpless.
HELENA.
I woke up feeling pretty good that morning. I didn't know what it was, but I loved the feeling regardless. I skipped happily downstairs, a little surprised.
There was no fresh aroma of bacon or eggs or pancake or…macaroni.
Where was Aaron?
I slowed down my steps, hearing a faint voice in the living room.
'I'm sorry Luna."
That was unmistakably Aaron's voice. What happened between him and Luna?
I stilled my breathing, trying to listen for some more. Luna didn't respond.
Within seconds, I heard the faint sound of retreating steps, and a sigh of frustration.
No way.
Luna was mad at Aaron. What could he have done?
I walked into the living room, to find a dejected Aaron sitting on the couch. He had his head in his hands.
'Aaron.."
He raised his head instantly, gazing into my eyes. He looked tired. Something grabbed my chest and squeezed. Hard.
'Hey Helena. Good morning. Did you sleep well?" His voice was husky, and a little cracked.
'Yeah I did. Doesn't seem like you did though. Are you okay?"
He sighed. 'Yeah, but Luna is upset with me."
Duhhhh, I figured that out.
'Alright, let's get to the bottom of this. What happened?"
I sat on the couch, trying to ignore the heavy silence. I glanced over at Aaron, who was still hesitant to tell me what was going on. His expression was a mixture of frustration and confusion. If there was anything I hated, it was unnecessary tension.
"Aaron, can you please tell me what happened?" I asked softly, my voice filled with concern.
Aaron stopped pacing and ran a hand through his hair, sighing deeply. "I don't know, Helena. One moment, Luna and I were talking, and the next, she's giving me the cold shoulder. She won't even look at me."
I frowned, trying to piece together the fragments of information she had. That was really unlike her. "What were you talking about before she started ignoring you?"
He shook his head, furrowing his brows. "We were talking about her reasons for staying here, you know, with you and me. I mentioned how important it was to have a safe place, and how she only agreed to stay here because she needed your help. After that, she just…shut off."
