Chapter 88: My Destiny.
HELENA.
'Hey I didn't say both of you should stop talking…" I folded my arms and glared at both of them. They looked like little cubs that had gone against their mom's words, hanging their heads and staring straight at the ground.
Aaron lifted his head first, meeting my gaze and winking.
My face flushed and I looked away.
'I saw that." Luna said, smiling mischievously.
'Saw what?" I tried to make my voice as innocent as possible.
'The interaction, awfully known as…flirting." She said, and I smiled.
'I don't see where the problem is." Aaron said, looking confused between both of us.
'You didn't even see anything so what's the point?" She added,
He glared at her, picking up a dumpling from the tray of snacks he brought.
Suddenly, my phone rang.
I took it out of my pocket and checked the caller ID.
My face fell. Why would he be calling me?
I glanced over at Luna and Aaron, who were busy with Tyrus and their food, and excused myself to take the call.
'Caleb. What do I owe this surprise?" I asked over the phone, trying to be as quiet as possible.
'I wanted to say goodbye." His voice was plain, simple, and without emotion.
My stomach lurched.
'What do you mean goodbye?" It sounded absurd, unreal, and almost….sad.
'I'm leaving Henley right now. And probably never to return. Look, Helena. I know things didn't work out well between us, and I know I was a total dick when it came to treating you right. But I just want you to forgive me. Seeing you this past month has made me realize a lot of things, I just needed closure. And I'm sure you do too."
Why was everyone making me emotional tonight?
I stood speechless on the porch, a little confused, but a lot more in accordance with him. I understood what he meant, but believing it was another ball game. My silence must have given him more time to think, because he said, 'Allow someone else to love you. Because it's not me."
'Caleb..I.." I stuttered.
Someone else to love me…
'Shh, it's alright Helena. I just wanted to say that. If you'd want, we'll talk more often. Bye." He added, switching off the phone.
I stood on the porch for the next five minutes, my mind filled with our memories. Caleb was once the perfect boyfriend, but as they say, all that glitters isn't gold.
I suddenly remembered he was searching for the scroll. Guess he didn't find it.
I walked back to Aaron and Luna, who bombarded me with questions the moment I sat down.
I told them the truth, that Caleb was gone.
Aaron seemed nonchalant, but I knew he was happy.
Regardless, we brushed it aside and continued our camp night.
We played games, ate good food, and told creepy stories. Aaron had quite a lot to tell, and his stories kept me on edge for the most part.
By the time it was 12am, I was dozing off on his shoulder. 'Alright, it's time for bed." I heard him whisper. He lifted me up and placed me in the tent, kissing my forehead and covering me up with a blanket.
I smiled softly, drifting deeper and deeper into the darkness.
AARON.
I walked out of the tent, feeling a lot better. Luna sat cross legged, lost in thoughts.
'You should stay with her." I heard her say as I sat down.
'Huh?"
'Stay with Helena. In the tent. I know you want to." Her eyes were filled with a mischievous glint. I sighed, agreeing with her. Then I whipped my head up.
'Wait…how do you.."
'Tyrus saw you two kiss. Why didn't either of you tell me? I knew you liked her, and she felt the same but you two were doing this slow burn thing that just pissed me off. When did you let it loose?" She leaned closer, positioning her ear as though I wanted to whisper a deep secret.
'I don't know Luna." I said, laughing lightly. 'It just…happened." More like the tension threads were getting tired of keeping us apart. 'I love her." I found myself saying.
Luna shook her head slightly. 'Love is a beautiful thing. But don't forget what you are. And what she is." Her gaze was meaningful, and it sent an uncertain dagger straight for my heart.
'I know…" And I didn't care. Whatever it took, I'd do it. I'd take good care of her, and keep her as mine. I just had to deal with the elders first. They hadn't contacted me in a while, and I just hoped they gave up on trying to find me. Because it wasn't going to work. Ever.
'Be careful then." Luna got up and placed Tyrus inside her tent. She returned, holding a mirror. 'Remember when I said your aura changed?" She asked, looking into the mirror and nodding slightly.
'Yeah?" I creased my brows.
'Well, I tried doing some digging, and I couldn't find the reason. Werewolves don't normally experience this after a fight, the only thing known to cause a reawakening is usually magical encounters and all that shit."
I paused, trying to understand what she was saying.
'Except….Alphas." She added.
My blood ran cold. Does that mean..
'Yes Aaron. The elders were right. You have alpha blood. That also explains why your eyes change from green to red when you morph."
I didn't even notice that. 'Wow. If that's the case then, the elders might try bringing me back with more reinforcements." And Helena is in a lot more danger.
'We'll deal with that later." Luna said, putting out the fire. It had already died to just a smolder.
'We?"
'Yeah? What you think I'm gonna let you handle them on your own? They took my family away from me. The love of my life. I have the scroll now so it'll be easy as hell to have my revenge, but I wanna help you first."
Her voice had a tone of finality, and it gave me chills.
'Thank you, Luna." Was all I could say.
'Alright, get some shut eye. Unless you wanna go hunting in the woods again." She teased, getting up and walking towards her tent.
I probably won't go hunting for a little while longer. The darkness held such formidable beings, and I was tired of seeing them.
Me, an Alpha.
It felt odd, but not new. I had been brought up with that same mentality, that I would one day lead the Crescent moon pack. I never expected it to be reality.
Old tales told by my mom and dad, the elders, my pack members.
I was always the odd one out. The one who preferred isolation.
There was a faint rustle in the bushes, and the unmistakable stench of sulfur. What the heck..
My senses went on high alert, and I sprung to my feet, walking towards Helena's tent.
Luna was still awake, because she peered out of hers, glancing at me with a knowing look.
I nodded at her, placing sage and cinnamon around Helena's tent. We both walked into the woods to search for the demon that wanted to attack us. All the while, one thought roamed in my head.
I think it's high time I stopped running away from my destiny.
