Chapter 141: Adjusting to New Environment
AARON.
My dad sighed, but I could see the tension easing out of him. He nodded, still looking serious but less harsh. 'You're right. I'm glad you're back, son. Even if you have a habit of being a little rascal."
The warmth in his voice took me by surprise. I hadn't been expecting him to be so... soft, for lack of a better word. He'd always been the strict one, always pushing me to be better, stronger. But now, there was something different in the way he looked at me, like he was proud of me just for being here.
We spent the next few minutes catching up, my mom fussing over me like I was a kid again, asking if I'd been eating properly, if I'd been keeping safe. My dad threw in a few teasing remarks about my sudden return, but it was clear he was just glad to have me home.
By the time we wrapped up our conversation, I was completely drained. As much as I loved my parents, the constant attention from everyone was starting to wear me out. I'd barely had a moment to myself since we arrived, and it was clear the day wasn't over yet.
'We'll catch up more later." my mom said, patting my arm gently. 'You need to rest. You look exhausted."
I couldn't help but smile at her. 'Yeah, it's been a long day already."
My dad nodded in agreement, though I could tell he was still holding back a few more words of advice. Instead, he just clapped me on the shoulder. 'We'll talk. Get settled in first. The pack members will be expecting you."
I thanked them both before turning back to the Alpha House. My legs felt like they were moving on autopilot, guiding me back through the village while the greetings and waves continued to come from every direction.
When I finally reached the house, I breathed a sigh of relief. The constant buzz of voices had finally faded away, leaving me with the quiet I'd been craving since we arrived. I pushed open the door and stepped inside, glancing around for any sign of Luna or Helena.
The Alpha House was secluded, though the other pack members had their own houses close by. It gave me a sense of privacy.
'Where is everyone?" I muttered to myself, walking through the hallways. I checked each of the rooms as I went. Luna's stuff was already in one of the rooms, so I knew she had to be around somewhere.
It wasn't long before I noticed the door to the balcony was slightly open, letting in a cool breeze.
I walked toward the balcony, as the soft rustling of the night air grew louder. When I stepped outside, I saw Helena leaning against the railing, her gaze fixed on the view of LunaVille beneath the starlit sky.
For a moment, I just watched her. There was something peaceful about the way she stood there, her hair catching the faint breeze, her shoulders slightly relaxed. It was a rare moment of calm after the chaos of the day.
She was so beautiful.
But I could tell by the way her fingers fidgeted against the railing that her mind was far from at ease.
'Enjoying the view?" I asked, stepping up beside her.
She jumped slightly, turning to look at me. 'You scared me."
'Sorry," I chuckled. 'Didn't mean to sneak up on you."
She shook her head, giving me a small smile. 'It's fine. I just didn't expect anyone to be out here."
'Neither did I." I admitted, leaning against the railing next to her. 'Needed a break from everything, I guess."
'I can imagine," she said, glancing over at me. 'You've been getting a lot of attention today."
'More than I expected," I sighed. 'But that's part of the deal, I suppose."
Helena nodded, her eyes drifting back to the village below. 'It must feel strange, coming back here after all this time."
I thought about her words for a moment. 'Yeah, it does. It's... home, but not the same as I remember. It's almost like I'm a guest in my own town."
'That's understandable," she said softly. 'You've been away for a long time."
I looked over at her, noticing the way her face softened in the moonlight. 'Six months isn't that long. What about you? How are you holding up?"
She let out a quiet laugh. 'Honestly? I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I'm in a town full of werewolves. It's... overwhelming."
'I can imagine," I said, trying to sound reassuring. 'But you've handled it all pretty well so far."
She sighed, rubbing her arms as if to ward off the chill. 'Barely. And now, being here, I just... I don't know what to expect."
'You're safe here." I said, meeting her gaze. 'I'll make sure of it."
She smiled again, though it was a little softer this time. 'Thanks, Aaron."
We stood in comfortable silence for a while, the night air filling the space between us. I felt that same connection with Helena in that moment, like I always felt. Like we were sharing something unspoken. I found myself wanting to say more, to somehow ease her nerves, but I wasn't sure how to put it into words.
'Helena. I can't help but feel like I kinda pulled you into what you wouldn't do ordinarily." I said quietly. 'But Luna and I, we're here for you."
'It's not like that Aaron. I chose this on my own. And I know," she replied, looking down at her hands. 'It's just... a lot to take in. Everything feels so new, and I don't exactly fit in."
'You'll fit in just fine," I said, trying to catch her eyes again. Those big brown eyes that made my heart wanna jump out. 'You're tougher than you think."
Helena laughed softly. 'I don't feel tough."
'You don't have to feel it," I said. 'You just have to be it."
