Chapter 128: Bonds of Protection
AARON
We stood in silence for a moment, the sounds of the forest filling the quiet space between us. The weight of the night was heavy, but I could feel the resolve. We had a long night ahead, and there was no room for hesitation.
I glanced back at Helena's tent, then turned to Luna. 'I'm going to check on her," I said quietly.
Luna nodded. 'Go ahead. I'll keep watch."
I pushed aside the flap of Helena's tent and stepped in, my anger mixed with worry. Helena sat on her sleeping bag, looking pale and shaken.
'Hey," I said, trying to keep my voice calm. 'How are you doing?"
She looked at me, tired but trying to be strong. 'I'm okay," she said, though her voice shook a bit. 'Just a little shaken."
I crouched beside her, checking her ankle. It was swollen and red from the wound. 'You're not just ‘okay.' You're hurt. Let me take a look."
She winced when I touched her ankle. 'It's not that bad. I just need some rest."
'Rest won't fix this," I said, my voice firm but gentle. I glanced around the tent, my eyes landing on the first aid kit. 'Let's clean it up."
I cleaned her wound while Helena watched, her eyes filled with a mix of curiosity and gratitude. 'You know," she said with a faint smile, 'I've never had anyone take care of me like this before."
I glanced up at her. 'You're not exactly a werewolf expert, are you?"
'Maybe not," she replied with a teasing tone, 'but I'm learning."
I smiled, focused on her wound. 'Good. Those wolves were way out of line. They knew you weren't one of them but still came after you. I'll make sure they get what's coming."
I would say it a million times if I had to.
Helena nodded, looking serious. 'I know. I was scared. I shouldn't have wandered off."
'Don't blame yourself too much," I said, gently applying antiseptic. 'You didn't know they'd come after you like that."
She winced a little from the antiseptic but stayed still, letting me work. There was something close and comforting about the moment, even with the worry of the night.
I finished cleaning her wound and put on a fresh bandage. 'There you go," I said. 'All better."
I looked up, and noticed she was watching me with a curious expression. Her eyes narrowed slightly, a playful smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
'Where did you learn how to dress wounds like that?" she asked.
I chuckled, settling back on my heels. 'You'd be surprised, but I was a Boy Scout before...well, before life as a werewolf took over."
Before I was thrown into overdrive.
Her eyebrows shot up in surprise, and she laughed softly. 'A Boy Scout? Really? I never would've guessed."
'Yeah," I nodded, feeling a bit nostalgic. 'I wasn't always this rugged, you know. I learned a lot from those days. How to tie knots, start a fire, and, apparently, dress wounds." I smiled, remembering those simpler times. 'My troop leader was pretty strict about first aid. Said it could mean the difference between life and death in the wild."
Helena leaned back on her hands, still smiling. 'Apparently, he was right. You've already saved my life once tonight. Who knew being a Boy Scout would pay off like this?"
I shrugged, grinning. 'I didn't think much about it back then. I just wanted to be outdoors, away from everything. But I guess those skills stuck with me."
'Well, I'm glad they did," she said, her voice softening. 'Thank you, Aaron. For everything."
I nodded, feeling a warmth spread through my chest. 'Anytime. Just try to stay out of trouble, okay? I can't always be there to play the hero."
She laughed, a light, happy sound. 'I'll do my best. But no promises."
I grinned, the tension of the night fading into something easier, something better. 'Fair enough."
'Thank you," Helena said softly, her voice full of gratitude. 'I really appreciate it."
I smiled and brushed a strand of hair from her face. 'It's my job to look out for you, even if it means dealing with angry wolves."
Helena laughed quietly, and the sound was a relief to my tense nerves. 'I guess I'm lucky to have you looking out for me." Her eyes landed on mine.
'Don't get used to it," I teased. 'Next time, try not to make me chase you."
Her eyes twinkled with amusement. 'I'll try. But like I said earlier, no promises."
I stood up, stretching a bit. The anger I'd felt earlier had eased. Seeing Helena safe and hearing her voice made a difference. I leaned down, gazing into her eyes. Instant comfort, relief.
She was fine.
I exhaled and gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead. 'Goodnight, little wolf."
Her eyes softened, and she smiled at me, not minding the name. 'Goodnight, Aaron."
I left her tent, feeling the night air cool on my face. Walking back to my own tent, I felt like the night had changed. Maybe it was the care we shared or just being close like this.
I loved her, I knew I did.
Either way, the anger had faded, replaced by a sense of relief and something deeper.
CALEB.
The drive back to Hulvey felt like a long, winding road, but the weight on my shoulders had lifted. Marcus and I had successfully gathered the ingredients for the antidote. We might have had to fight ten huge creatures, nine of which were five times our size, but hey, we made it. That's all that mattered at this point. Anything else, could come later. I could hardly believe we had made it through, but now, all I wanted was to see my brother safe again. I wanted life to go back to normal.
I wanted that peace.
The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was a beautiful sight, but I barely registered it. My mind was focused on Kyle. The image of him, pale and weak, was burned into my memory. I hoped the antidote would work well, because if it didn't…..
Well, let's not head there now.
'Feels good to be heading back ay?" Marcus said, breaking the silence. He drove with a steady hand, his expression one of optimism.
'Yeah," I replied, trying to match his tone. 'I'm just relieved we got everything we needed. Without dying in the end"
He glanced at me, his eyes showing a mixture of sympathy and curiosity. 'At least, you got to fight a three armed monodragon. They're pretty rare you know?"
I glared at him. 'I would have been better off not knowing that information."
He chuckled lowly, making a right turn. 'You've been a little too quiet. What's on your mind?"
I took a deep breath, looking out the window. 'Just thinking about…well, everything. My life in general, Kyle, Brielle, Uncle Kelly…"
Uncle Kelly.
I needed to know what he did- or what he was doing with Dr. Flora. 'Seeing Kyle like that was tough. Combined with this unplanned mission. It's been a rough few days."
It'll all be worth it.
