Chapter 45: Strange.
HELENA
The fork was still hanging in the air.
'Come on, open up." He smirked. I just realized how close we were to each other. I also noticed he only had his apron on, with his signature gray sweatpants. My palms became nervous.
He waved the fork again. 'The pancakes are getting cold Helena." For some reason, that came out more flirtatious than it actually was. My head was messing with me. I hesitated, but opened my mouth eventually.
'Mmm…" They were so good.
'Always the best." He gloated, watching my expression.
'Shut up. This doesn't make up for anything."
His face fell, and I burst into laughter.
'I need a picture of this. You look perfect for a meme."
His frown deepened. 'I'm really sorry Helena."
'Aaron.." I sighed.
'No, it's not right. But I can't bring myself to accept the fact that I have to leave. I just can't." He shook his head slowly. He looked like a six year old who was caught stealing meat from his mom's soup.
So damn cute.
'Listen, you just have to find a way out. You might not like it, but it's your responsibility."
'Your people needs you and you have to answer to their call" I said but mumbled my words within.
'He has to return to his pack, they need him more than I do, he has a responsibility to carry out, his people needs him" The thought kept playing in my head
'What are you even saying?" 'Don't you need him around too?" 'Why do you keep deceiving yourself?"
'Is this not what you've always wanted?" My head kept messing with me but I snapped out from my thoughts immediately I heard his voice responding
CALEB.
'You didn't have to fight him, Caleb. What if he's her boyfriend?" Aunt Georgina scolded as we drove to the bank.
'I didn't fight him ma. He got involved in our business." And he's not her boyfriend, but I wasn't about to make that clear to her now. She'd try to matchmake us, and I wasn't cut out for such drama.
A tiny part of me wanted to see Helena this morning, but it was 7am. It would be unlikely.
'Business? He stays with her. Of course he's her business. You were the one who seemed like an outsider." She rambled on, flipping through some pages.
She was old, yet her brain was still so sharp. It's all that chocolate.
The rest of the drive basked in silence. Last night, I noticed something odd about Caleb. We had had our close calls before, but this one seemed different. He was calm, but his aura was deadly. Almost as dangerous as mine.
I also noticed that his teeth were a bit too long. That strange flash in his eyes. That guy wasn't human. If he was, there's a possibility that he had a weird childhood.
I dropped off Aunt Georgina and got to work on the old library. Helena mentioned three places where strange activities happened, most likely where powerful energy was hidden. The History section, the Nook, and the storage room underground.
I drew a layout of the place, and decided where to make my observations. The place was falling apart, so I'd need to be careful if I was going to the storage room.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed.
'Yeah?"
'Caleb.."
I looked at the caller ID and froze. Brielle never calls me.
'What's wrong?"
'You…you need to come home. Now." She sounded terrified. I got up from my chair, closing my laptop
'You need to tell me the reason first. I can't drive 30 miles for something trivial."
'It's Kyle. He's…he's changing." She whispered.
'Changing? What do you mean?"
'He wasn't joking or lying when he said he's a werewolf. I don't know if he's been infected or anything, but he's not himself." I heard faint noises in the background. She whimpered.
'Where are you? Brielle?" The phone was silent.
My heart thumped loudly in my chest.
'I'm at his mansion. Julia and the kids are gone. They think he's going insane. I don't know what to do Caleb. I.."
'Calm down. We'll sort this out."
'Caleb…please just come back. I think only you can handle this." She hung up.
I ran my hands through my hair, trying to understand what she just told me.
When Kyle initially talked about the werewolf saga, I actually thought he was being a paranoid little bitch. But Brielle would never play such a joke on me.
I called Doctor Flora as soon as the call dropped.
'Caleb..what a pleasant surprise. What can I do for you?"
' A little word of greeting would be appreciated. Not everyone is in a good mood." I growled.
'Who's got their hands up your ass now?" She laughed. Cocky idiot.
'Do you know anything about werewolves? If a human gets bitten are they likely to turn into one?"
The line was silent for a few seconds, and I heard her sigh.
'Caleb what happened?"
'Just answer me goddamnit."
'Look, I've only worked on them twice. The likelihood of a human becoming one is low, but not impossible. The human body isn't designed to hold such strengths, and even if a person successfully turns into a werewolf, the mutation wouldn't let him live for too long. It's just a hypothesis, I'm not sure."
Fuck.
'How long could the person survive?"
'Probably three to six months. What happened Caleb?"
I sighed. 'Is there a way to reverse the effects?"
'Ignore my question one more time." She scoffed.
'It's Kyle. He thinks he's been infected. Brielle just called and said he's acting weird. That's why I called you."
She gasped audibly. 'She should bring him in immediately. I want to examine him."
'Alright. I'll tell her."
'Stay safe Caleb. And return soon. You're going to want to see him." She hung up.
First, someone breaks into my house. Next, Uncle Kelly sends me on a wild goose chase. Now, Kyle is acting strangely, most likely being a werewolf.
What the hell was happening?
