Chapter 112: Who had Called off the Wolf?
AARON
I reached the edge of the clearing, my heart pounding in my chest. The rustling came again, and I turned sharply, eyes scanning the darkness.
And then I saw it—a pair of glowing eyes staring back at me from the shadows.
A chill ran down my spine as I took a cautious step forward. 'Who's there?" I called out softly, my voice steady despite the fear gripping my heart.
The eyes blinked, and then there was a low growl, deep and menacing. I braced myself, my mind racing. I didn't know what was out there, but whatever it was, it wasn't friendly.
I crouched low, my senses sharpened, every nerve in my body on high alert. I felt the adrenaline coursing through my veins, a familiar yet unsettling rush. I knew I should go back and wake Luna, but I didn't want to risk leading whatever this was back to the cabin.
I moved a little closer, careful not to make a sound. The growl grew louder, more threatening. I could feel the creature's presence; it was big, powerful, and clearly not afraid to show it.
'Show yourself," I commanded, my voice a low growl of its own. I didn't want to escalate the situation, but I needed to know what I was dealing with.
There was a pause, and then, slowly, the creature stepped forward, just enough for me to see its massive form. A large, dark wolf. But not just any wolf—this one was different. There was something almost unnatural about it, something that made my skin crawl.
The wolf stared at me, its glowing eyes full of a dark intelligence. It didn't move, didn't attack, just stood there, watching me. I felt a bead of sweat trickle down my neck. I knew I was in a standoff, and I wasn't sure how to end it without violence.
'Aaron?" came a soft whisper from behind me. I turned my head slightly to see Helena standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with fear.
'Helena, get back inside," I whispered urgently. 'Now."
But it was too late. The wolf's eyes shifted to Helena, and it let out a low, rumbling growl. My heart pounded. I couldn't let it get to her. Without thinking, I shifted slightly, putting myself between Helena and the wolf.
'Helena, listen to me. Go back inside and lock the door," I instructed, trying to keep my voice calm, though every muscle in my body was tense, ready to spring into action.
Helena hesitated, her eyes flicking from me to the wolf. 'But…."
'Now, Helena," I cut her off, my tone leaving no room for argument. My eyes glowed, and my claws extended sharply.
She nodded, her face pale, and slowly backed away into the cabin. As soon as she was out of sight, I focused all my attention on the wolf. It hadn't moved, but I could see its muscles tensing, ready to pounce.
'Okay," I muttered under my breath. 'You want a fight? Let's do this."
I braced myself, my body low, ready to leap into action. But just as the wolf seemed about to strike, there was a sudden, sharp whistle from somewhere deeper in the woods. The wolf's ears perked up, and it froze, its gaze shifting away from me.
I didn't dare move, my eyes locked on the creature. The whistle came again, more insistent this time. The wolf growled, a deep, frustrated sound, but then it turned and bounded back into the darkness, disappearing as suddenly as it had appeared.
I stood there for a moment, stunned. My heart was racing, and my breath came in short, sharp gasps. I couldn't believe it was over. Not like that. I strained my ears, trying to catch any other sounds, any hint of who—or what—might have called the wolf away. But there was nothing. Just the silence of the forest.
I waited a few moments longer, my muscles still taut, ready to spring into action. But when nothing happened, I finally allowed myself to relax, just a little. I turned back toward the cabin, seeing Luna now at the door, her expression a mix of concern and relief.
'What the hell was that?" she demanded in a low whisper.
I shook my head. 'I don't know," I said. 'But it's gone now. At least, I think it is."
Luna nodded, her face serious. 'We should get inside," she said. 'Just in case."
I agreed, and we quickly moved back into the cabin, locking the door behind us. Helena was standing near the fire, her face pale, her hands shaking. I walked over to her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
'Are you okay?" I asked softly.
She nodded, though she still looked shaken. 'What was that?" she whispered.
'I'm not sure," I replied. 'But it's gone now. We're safe."
Luna glanced out the window, her expression thoughtful. 'Whoever whistled… they called it off," she said slowly. 'Why would they do that?"
I frowned, my mind racing. 'I don't know," I said. 'But I think we need to be extra careful from now on. Whatever that was, it wasn't just a random wolf."
Luna nodded in agreement. 'Agreed. We should take turns keeping watch tonight, just to be safe."
I looked at Helena, who still seemed a bit shaken. 'You should get some rest," I told her gently. 'Luna and I will take the first watch."
Helena hesitated but then nodded. 'Okay," she said quietly. 'But wake me up if you need me."
I smiled, touched by her courage. 'We will," I promised.
As Helena settled back down, Luna and I took our positions by the window, our eyes scanning the dark forest outside. The tension was still thick in the air, but I felt a sense of determination settle over me.
Whatever was out there, whatever had just happened, I knew we would face it together.
The night stretched on, the silence of the forest pressing in around us. My thoughts raced, going over the events of the evening again and again. Who had called off the wolf? And why?
