Chapter 140: Reconnection
HELENA
Luna sat down across from me, and we both took a moment to just breathe. I looked around the room, noting the simple but elegant decor. It was peaceful here, a sharp contrast to the chaos I'd been feeling.
Luna stretched her legs out and smiled. 'So, how's it feel to be in the middle of a wolf town?"
I laughed softly. 'It's definitely different. I mean, I'm surrounded by real wolves now, not just Aaron and you."
'It's a lot to take in," she agreed. 'But you're doing great. Really."
I appreciated her encouragement, though I wasn't sure if I completely believed it. 'I still can't believe they bought the idea that I'm a wolf."
Luna grinned. 'It's because you've got the right attitude. Besides, if they ever do find out, we'll just deal with it then."
I nodded, feeling a bit more at ease. 'Thanks for sticking with me. I know this isn't exactly easy for you either."
'Hey," she said, waving a hand dismissively. 'We're a team. We stick together, no matter what."
The words were comforting. I knew Luna was right. Even though I was anxious about being here, it helped to know that I wasn't alone.
Just then, Aaron walked in, looking relaxed despite the busy day. 'How are you two holding up?" he asked, his eyes softening when he saw me.
'We're good," Luna said, giving him a playful nudge. 'Just enjoying the peace and quiet."
Aaron chuckled. 'Good. I'm glad you're settling in. We've got a lot to do, but for now, take it easy."
He then turned his attention to me, and I could see the genuine concern in his eyes. 'Are you okay?"
I nodded, giving him a reassuring smile. 'I am. Thanks."
He seemed to relax a little at my response, and with a final nod, he left us to catch up with his duties. I watched him go, feeling a mix of relief and admiration.
Luna and I spent the rest of the evening chatting and making the room feel more like home. We laughed about the day's events, and I found myself relaxing more as time went on. The sense of being part of something, of having Luna and Aaron by my side, helped ease the nervousness I'd felt since arriving.
As night fell, the house grew quieter. I could hear the distant sounds of the town settling down, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me. Maybe this place wouldn't be so bad after all. Maybe I could find a way to fit in, even if I was still nervous.
With that thought, I settled into the chair by the window, looking out at the peaceful night. The stars were bright, and the moon cast a gentle light over the town. It was beautiful, in its own way. And for the first time since arriving, I felt like maybe, just maybe, I could be okay here.
AARON.
I should have probably eaten more than I did before we headed out.
After the meeting with the elders, I was suddenly pulled into the huge crowd of werewolves.
At that moment, I knew it was going to be a long day. Everywhere I turned, there were wolves I hadn't seen in months, some in years, all eager to greet me.
Some of them I remembered from childhood, others from my brief time before I left. They came at me one after the other, faces blending into a whirlwind of handshakes, shoulder pats, and enthusiastic greetings.
'Aaron! Look at you! Back where you belong!" one of the older wolves shouted, grabbing me in a bear hug.
'Alpha Aaron!" another voice chimed in, followed by a few others who crowded around, each vying for my attention.
I tried to keep up, smiling and nodding, but it felt like I was being pulled in every direction at once. It was overwhelming, to say the least. I'd forgotten how intense wolf pack gatherings could be, especially in a place like this, where everyone seemed to know each other.
'Aaron, you've grown taller!"
'You're looking strong, Alpha!"
'I didn't believe it when I heard you were back!"
The voices came at me nonstop, and I did my best to respond to each one with a polite word or two, but after a while, it all started to blur together. Every time I thought I had a moment to breathe, someone else would pop up with more questions or comments.
It was a frenzy.
At one point, I turned to Luna, hoping for some kind of rescue. She caught my eye and gave me a sympathetic smile, clearly amused by the chaos I was caught in.
'You'll survive," she mouthed, clearly enjoying my struggle.
I shot her a look that said I wasn't so sure, but before I could say anything, another wolf appeared, eager to catch up.
By midday, I was exhausted. My face hurt from smiling, and I'd shaken more hands than I could count. The whole thing was becoming almost comical. Every time I thought I'd reached the end of the crowd, someone else would pop out of nowhere, acting like I was a celebrity or something.
'Aaron!" I heard a familiar voice call out, cutting through the noise.
I turned around just in time to see my parents walking toward me. My mom, with her soft smile and familiar warmth, and my dad, looking a little more serious but no less happy to see me.
'Aaron, oh my sweet my boy!" my mom cried out, pulling me into a tight hug. 'I can't believe you're here. Just like that. Why did you leave without any warning?!"
I hugged her back, feeling a mix of relief and guilt. 'I'm sorry about that," I mumbled. 'It was kind of last minute."
My dad stood back, arms crossed, giving me a stern look. 'Last minute, huh? You couldn't have at least sent a message, let us know you were coming?"
I snorted inwardly, but appeared as if I winced. 'I didn't really plan it. Things just happened."
He gave me that disapproving look I knew all too well, the one that said I should have known better. But before he could say anything more, my mom stepped in.
'Oh, leave him alone, dear. He's here now, isn't he?" She gave my dad a pointed look before turning back to me with a bright smile. 'We're just happy to see you, Aaron. It's been too long."
It's been six months.
