Chapter 108: The Journey
HELENA.
'Hey," Luna said gently, putting her hand on my shoulder. 'Stop doing this to yourself. We've been through worse and made it through. You're strong, Helena. You wouldn't be here if you weren't."
I swallowed, trying to find comfort in Luna's words. But deep down, the fear stayed. It wasn't just about the mission; it was about the chance of being exposed and vulnerable in a place where I didn't belong. 'I just don't want to let anyone down."
'You won't," Luna said firmly. 'And we won't let anything happen to you. Aaron and I will be with you every step of the way. We're in this together."
I let out a shaky breath, nodding again. 'I know. I just… wish I didn't feel so scared."
Luna's face softened, and she squeezed my shoulder reassuringly. 'Fear is natural, especially with what we're doing. But don't let it control you. Use it. Let it sharpen your senses and make you more aware. You're not alone in this."
Before I could reply, there was a soft knock on the door, and Aaron's voice came through. 'Are you two ready? We need to go over the plan one last time before we leave."
Luna stood up, giving me one last encouraging look before heading to the door. 'Come on," she said softly. 'Let's get this done."
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, and followed Luna out to the small living room. Aaron was already there, pacing near the table where our supplies were laid out. His tall, muscular frame moved smoothly, even though his face showed tension. He stopped when he saw Luna and me enter, his dark eyes scanning us with concern.
'We're cutting it close," he said, looking at the clock on the wall. 'We need to get going soon."
'I know," Luna replied, picking up a small vial with shimmering silver liquid from the table. She handed it to me. 'This potion will let you shift back to human form if the spell starts to wear off. Keep it with you at all times."
I took the vial, feeling its weight in my hand. It was small, but it meant a lot. I nodded and carefully put it in my pocket. 'I will."
Aaron stood next to Luna, looking serious. 'We'll avoid the main roads and stick to the less-traveled paths. The fewer werewolves we meet, the better. Once we reach LunaVille, we'll go straight to the safe house. It's deep in the woods, away from the main town. We'll stay there until we decide what to do next."
I listened closely, trying to take in every detail. The plan was solid, but it didn't ease the fear in my stomach. I looked between Luna and Aaron, their confidence both comforting and intimidating. They had always been the strong ones, the ones who knew what to do. I had always depended on them. But now, I felt like I was the weak link, the one who might mess everything up.
'Helena," Aaron's voice pulled me out of my thoughts, making me look at him. He was watching me with a look that made me feel seen, truly seen, in a way that both comforted and unsettled me. 'I know this is hard for you. But we wouldn't have brought you into this if we didn't believe you could handle it. We trust you."
I blinked, surprised by the sincerity in Aaron's voice. It wasn't often that he spoke so openly and directly. I felt a lump form in my throat and swallowed it down, forcing myself to meet his gaze. 'Thank you," I said softly, my voice barely a whisper.
Aaron nodded, a small, reassuring smile at the corners of his mouth. 'We'll get through this. Together."
I nodded, feeling a bit of the tension in my chest ease. I knew I needed to trust them, to trust myself. There was no room for doubt now. We were about to step into the heart of enemy territory, and we needed to be united, focused, and unafraid.
'Okay," I said, my voice firmer now. 'What else do we need to do before we leave?"
Luna handed me a small dagger, its blade shining in the dim light. 'Just in case," she said seriously. 'Remember, this isn't just about survival. It's about staying hidden. We can't let anyone find out who you really are."
I took the dagger, feeling its cold weight in my hand. The thought of needing it, of using it, made my stomach turn, but I nodded and slipped it into my boot. 'I understand."
Aaron moved to the window, looking out into the dark street. 'We should go soon," he said quietly. 'The longer we wait, the riskier it gets."
Luna nodded, shouldering a leather bag with our supplies. 'Let's move out."
We stepped into the cool night air, the town behind us already feeling distant. I looked back once, the familiar buildings and streets now seeming strange, like a dream. I took a deep breath and turned my attention forward. There was no going back now.
As we walked through the darkened streets, I couldn't help but think about all the times I had walked these same roads, feeling safe and at home. Now, every step felt like I was moving deeper into enemy territory, the weight of my deception heavy on my shoulders. I felt Luna and Aaron's comforting presence beside me, their silent strength keeping me grounded.
'LunaVille is different from what you're used to," Luna said quietly as we walked. 'It's a place where power is everything. The strong dominate, and the weak… well, the weak don't last long."
I glanced at her, feeling the weight of her words. 'And you think I can fool them?"
Luna's eyes softened a bit. 'With our help, yes. But you need to be careful. The spell I cast on you will hold, but if someone gets too close….if they're too powerful…they might sense something's off."
I nodded, my heart beating faster. 'What about you and Aaron? What's the plan once we're inside?"
