Chapter 59: Uncertainty.
CALEB.
I think the world itself is spiraling out of control. There's been a bad shift in the rules controlling the universe.
'Yes, I have."
Suddenly, he narrowed his eyes.
'Did it bite you?"
I nodded slowly, subconsciously running my fingers over the scars on my ribs.
'And? Do you feel any changes in your system?"
I was taken aback completely. I had never seen Uncle Kelly show much interest in….anything.
But to answer his question, I didn't feel anything. Just the same old me, with a little more energy. Guess I needed that two day sleep.
He stroked his chin, and dropped his eyes. The chill in the room returned, sending shivers down my spine. 'You have two months left. Don't fail me, Caleb." With that, he got up and walked out of the living room.
I stared at his form, wondering what sort of human being he was. If only I could attain that level of power someday.
The drive to the Castle Hotel was silent, filled with the voices in my head. The werewolf attack, the scroll, and Uncle Kelly's silent warning. How would I even start the mission? I knew a few places in the library, but I still needed Helena's help. And that was proving a little too difficult.
I would head over to see Kyle tomorrow. Hopefully, his condition was better than Brielle described.
I pulled in front of the hotel, handing my keys over to the chauffeur standing at the door. The doorman tipped his hat, pushing the huge glass doors open for me. I texted Dr. Flora. It was 8:30pm, a little early never hurt anyone.
'Last floor, second chamber." She said over the phone. I nodded and began walking towards the elevator. The hotel was intricately designed to the tiniest detail, and I took my time to admire the work. It had this gothic ancient theme.
The entire hotel's main color was white, and as such, different elements summed up to a very bright shade. The doors, windows, even the glass panes had a touch of white. The receptionist was warm and friendly, even offering me a drink.
I flagged her off, focusing on what Dr. Flora had to say.
The chamber was small and private, small. Perfect for confidential conversations. I sat down on the plush armchairs, settling in. I began to go over the minutes of my last research concerning the scroll.
It was said that the last time anyone came in contact with it would be around 500 years ago, and it was used by a vampire against his entire clan because they killed his wife wrongly. He had protested against the brutality, claiming that the woman was innocent of theft.
In those days, there were several mechanisms of finding out the perpetrator, and magic was one of it. But none of these were considered, and she was beheaded in front of her husband. The vampire swore to get revenge, but he was merely a commoner and had no authority.
Instead, he went in search of the scroll, found it, and unleashed chaos upon the kingdom. Everyone was wiped out, including him.
The scroll had vanished from the face of the earth since then.
Or so they thought.
'Caleb.." a feminine voice said behind me.
I whipped around.
'Dr. Flora."
She extended her arm, and I took it as she sat down opposite me.
'You don't look like someone who was just attacked by a werewolf." She smirked, going through the menu.
'Haha, very funny." I placed my phone in my pockets. 'So, what did you want to talk about?"
She pulled out a file from a suitcase. 'How do you feel? Any changes?" She said, flipping through some papers.
'No, nothing's changed. And I'm concerned."
'That's good news. Why should you be concerned?" She peered up at me through her nose rimmed glasses.
She was right, I shouldn't be, but I was. What if there was some sort of silent abnormality going on inside of me?
I just shrugged.
'Well, I didn't have the time to examine you properly when you were brought in. As Brielle might have told you, I just took your blood samples. They look pretty normal. Nothing too exciting."
I don't know why that felt like bad news.
'But, werewolf bites can be unpredictable. I wanna know exactly what happened. Every minute detail." She pulled out a small notebook and a pen.
I stared at her with a blank expression. 'That's weird, but okay."
I ordered a martini, and recounted everything that happened that night. It felt like I was experiencing it all over again, and I had to loosen up a few buttons on my shirt just so I could breathe.
Dr. Flora listened intently, occasionally jotting down some points in her notebook.
'I noticed something weird about the attack though. It seemed almost…desperate." I said, my voice light despite the fear lingering in my voice. I couldn't admit it but I was scared as hell.
'The wolf went straight for the kill. No taunting, no initial hesitation, not even recognizing Brielle hidden under the bed." I had thought of it as strange, too strange. Any wolf should have been able to sense her. Maybe the wolf was just too caught up in getting me out of the way?
Dr. Flora nodded thoughtfully. 'Werewolves aren't usually driven to kill unless they're cornered by something other than hunger. They're known to be incredibly aggressive even when provoked."
'It didn't feel planned. More like an encounter that escalated quickly." I replied. That sounded a bit more logical. I glanced down at my hands, remembering the fear and adrenaline that surged through my veins during the encounter. 'Even Brielle wasn't expecting it."
'I don't think we can rule out any exceptions." She shut her notebook, taking a sip from the glass of water beside her. 'Anyways, we need to make sure there aren't any residual impacts from the attack. Since you said you haven't experienced any change, I'll do a normal examination."
She pulled out a small bag from her case and opened it. Inside were several pieces of medical equipment. I glanced at her, hesitant.
'Shall we?" She gestured towards a room on the far end.
I nodded, and followed her in.
During the examination, she remained quiet and professional, prodding and poking where necessary. It put me at ease for some reason.
After what seemed like an eternity, she finally spoke. 'Your vitals seem normal, although your heart rate has slightly increased. You said you can't feel anything abnormal, but we'll have to monitor your condition for the next few weeks. Even Kyle's transformation didn't happen immediately."
She had a point.
I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
'Thank you, Flora." I said quietly.
'Anytime. Just keep me updated. Also, Kyle seems much better. He regained consciousness this morning. After you discharged yourself." She looked at me judgingly.
'I had something to take care of. And I was fully conscious."
'That's not an excuse."
'Oh please. I'll visit Kyle tomorrow. I'm a little too tired." I said, rubbing my forehead.
'Okay then, I'll take my leave now. Caleb, if anything unusual happens, don't hesitate to call me or let me know. Each detail is relevant. There's no taking chances here." She said, before walking off.
No chances, right.
I just hope I'd listen to myself.
