Chapter 79: No Luck.
AARON.
'Yeah. So what do you think we should do? I'm actually very interested in them." I could tell. Her enthusiasm reeked all over the place. 'What if we caught one? We could experiment on it and find out more about their anatomy and.."
I slammed my fist on the table, attracting side glances and whispers from the booths around us. 'No, we won't. They weren't created to be experimented on. I'm not interested in finding any of them." I was trying so hard to hide my rage. So…freaking hard. The slightest slip up and I could snap her head with my tail.
She flinched at my words, cowering in fear. 'Okay okay, we won't experiment on them. I'm sorry." She muttered, hanging her head low.
'Is everything okay here?" A waitress came up to our table. She eyed me repeatedly, softening her expression whenever she glanced at Linda.
'Yeah. Everything's fine." I replied, turning my attention back to my steak. She didn't leave, instead she kept glancing at Linda, who still held her head low.
'Linda?" I called. She raised her head up slightly, and my breath hitched. It was only for a brief moment, but her eyes glowed golden. Like someone had carefully painted her irises with bright yellow paint. She looked back up at the waitress and smiled.
'Everything's fine. No bother."
The waitress finally agreed to leave, after an indirect conversation with Linda on the dangers of dating abusive men. She left after handing her phone number to Linda, who seemed amused. I didn't even understand what she meant.
'Hey I'm sorry for reacting like that." I said the moment the waitress was gone. My main reason for apologizing wasn't the fact that she flinched. It was the fact that she wasn't human. Or if she was, she wasn't just human. I couldn't sense any werewolf energy from her, so that was ruled out. Was she a witch?
A vampire?
Does that explain why she was attracted to me at first?
'Like I said, no bothers. Some people don't like talking about other living creatures that way. But we eat them don't we?" There was something strange about her tone.
'Not necessarily werewolves. I mean that's like saying you wanna eat a gorilla." Except much stronger and more violent. She tilted her head slightly. 'I don't think eating a gorilla would be that bad."
'No way. I'm done with this conversation." I said, trying to lighten up the mood. The more serious she sounded, the more menacing she got. And this was no place to push her limits.
She laughed lightly. 'I'm just saying. Humans have done a lot of things. I mean, how did we discover the pineapple for example? We just love experiments."
'Maybe. But I'm not a fan of such. I just wanna return to the kitchen, and serve happy customers." I swayed my hands dramatically, surrendering. She laughed again, a little harder. I observed her pupils. They dilated more often than not, and the golden glow tried to hide beneath the brown orbs.
'Speaking of which, lunch time is almost over, we better head back. Wouldn't want to keep your happy customers waiting, ay?"
'Right."
CALEB.
'What do you mean by there's someone else here?" I asked, trying hard to keep my voice under a whisper. The library was so cold…so dreary. We had been hiding in the Arts of The Ancient for a little over two hours, and my knees were beginning to hurt.
'I know what I heard." Kyle stilled his breath, but I could hear the snarls building up in his chest. Sometimes I wondered what it was like to be him. To harness so much energy, yet find it difficult to control it. I used to think things like that were relatively easy.
I heard a faint crack behind me. 'What was that?" I tried to crane my neck, but it was no use. The darkness was too thick. 'Just keep still." Kyle whispered.
Eventually, I got tired of hiding and headed out of the tiny corner we were cramped up in. 'Don't! Caleb!" Kyle warned, but I couldn't do it anymore.
'There's no one here Kyle. No one. Come out and let's search for this thing." I was already getting highly impatient. He just stared at me from the corner, before diverting his attention to the aisle behind me. 'If only you'd just listen." I heard him mutter.
'Look, even if there was someone here, I don't think the best thing to do is hide. You're a fucking werewolf. Come out clean and take care of whoever it might be." For the most part, it might be what he even needs. A way of releasing all that pent up energy.
He exhaled and walked out of the corner, stretching his muscles.
'Thank you."
We searched everywhere. Aisle for aisle, section for section. There wasn't even the slightest hint as to where the secured piece of paper could be. By the time we were done combing through the aisles, I could have been sure it was almost past midnight. 'Why does it seem a lot harder today?" I said, trying to catch my breath. Yesterday it was like I could feel the scroll calling out to me. Like it was just waiting.
'Maybe that's because someone was here. But oh no, if someone was here I'd just..take care of it. Come on, let me take care of it now." Kyle grumbled beside me, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
'Not the time."
What would I tell Uncle Kelly?
'Wanna search everywhere one more time?"
I tossed a stone at him, and he laughed running off into the darkness. 'I'm just saying, maybe we didn't look well enough."
'I'm being serious Kyle. Uncle Kelly is counting on us."
'What if the scroll wasn't even here to begin with? It could just be another wild goose chase. You know how he is."
Fair point, and I had considered that, but there was just something…
'Fine then. Let's head home."
We packed up the rest of our stuff and made the partially long drive back to my apartment. Kyle immediately ran into the shower, singing one of Bob Marley's hit songs. I sat on the couch, and decided to call Marcus.
'Ay, what's going on mio fratello? Any news? Or do you wanna ask about werewolves again?" His Italian accent was smooth, unadulterated, and it made it pleasant to the ear.
Just this once.
'I just wanted to check in on you. Is that suddenly a crime?" I asked, feigning hurt.
'Caleb Blackwood, calling to check in on me. How does that sound?"
My face fell, but I kept mute.
'Exactly. Anyways, I'll accept your lie and have a drink tonight about it. So tell me, what's up?"
'Nothing too much. We couldn't find the scroll, so we're coming back to find more answers."
Kyle walked in on the conversation, only clad in a towel. I glared at him. He glared back.
'Ay, that's not good news. But is your Uncle even certain that the scroll is there? Kelly knows how to put people on wild goose chases. My guess is that he already knows where it is and he's just trying to test something."
Kyle jumped at the last two sentences, dancing in what I would think was a victory dance.
'Maybe. But I've checked those things. Argh. Marcus, we'll talk when I return to Hulvey. I hope you're done with that silly vacation."
'That's not nice now ay… the wife and children-" I hung up before he could continue.
'I was right. Let's just forget about this scroll stuff and return to our normal lives." Kyle said as soon as I dropped the call.
'Were our lives ever normal to begin with?"
