Chapter 86: Happy Moment
CALEB.
I was such an idiot.
Actually, I still am. I have always been an idiot.
'If only you would have just listened to me!" Kyle growled behind me.
Turned out, we were being lured into a trap specially set by werewolves.
They wanted to use us as a sacrifice.
Well, to be more specific, me.
These wolves were bigger and way stronger than Kyle was, so it was futile to even think about fighting them. All we could do was run.
We got to my car, a few seconds before the huge beasts caught up to us. 'Get us out of here already!" Kyle snarled. He wanted to go out there and fight. It was in his eyes, the way his tongue dripped with saliva.
He was bloodthirsty.
The thought made my heart drop, and all I could think about was how the last few months have been one rollercoaster of a ride. Eventually, we got as far away from the beasts as possible. I made a mental note never to return to that park again. Daytime, or night time.
'That was one of the most ridiculous nights of my life, and I'm still sleep deprived." Kyle grumbled as soon we walked into the house. There had been a power outage, so the house was dark, only lit up dimly by the moonlight outside.
'Can you stop whining? What if they had something for us?" I retorted, tired of hearing him play the blame game. It was my fault, I accepted, but he was being a cunt about it.
'I told you that no one just sends such messages without a motive. Kill your narcissism for once." He spat, walking upstairs.
I exhaled, falling on the couch. I grabbed the bottle of whiskey from the night before, swallowing all its contents. The alcohol burned my throat, but the pain was nothing compared to the dreary feeling I felt inside. This was not how I intended for things to go at all.
I just hoped that Dr. Flora had some good news for us.
We set out on the road early the next evening, heading to the airport for our flight back to Hulvey. Kyle was a lot calmer, even humming a faint tune. I was more…melancholic. I knew what awaited us as soon as we returned.
'Kyle, are you taking part in the competition Uncle organized for his successor?" I asked as we paused at a stop light. I wasn't taking part, and he knew. Brielle was still too young, so that left him.
He looked at me and scoffed. 'Like this? I don't think I can. I'd lose control." He muttered, staring out the window. A couple of girls pulled up beside us, winking at him. He maintained his cold expression, and wound up the glass. The girls' faces fell, and they drove off feeling embarrassed. Tough love.
'That's bullshit. You had perfect control last night. At least, with that lovely looking female." I teased. Before we ran for our fucking lives, a female werewolf crept up behind Kyle and licked his ear. She caught wind of his relation to what she was, and didn't attack. I was the one she wanted to use as sacrifice meat.
How ironic.
'Don't you fucking dare. She stank. I mean, what sort of flirting was that? I tried to get her saliva off my ear for hours in the shower." He blurted, subconsciously touching his ear and frowning even more.
I laughed at his little display of drama. 'Come on, you have to at least try. It'll help you put something underneath your feet. Find your footing. Besides, you're one of the most persuasive and annoying people I know. But you're good at what you do." I said, nudging his arm. The traffic light turned yellow, and I revved the engine, waiting.
Kyle sighed thoughtfully, looking at his reflection from the side view mirror. 'If you say so. And I agree, I'm incredibly annoying." He gloated, patting himself on the shoulder.
Oh brother.
'Indeed." The light finally turned green, and I sped off.
The airport was packed, as passengers lined up the ticket booths, some waiting for the boarding passes, others arguing about who gets what. Families were making sure everyone was together at all times, and couples were finding it hard to say goodbye to each other. The airport was a beautiful place, no jokes. It was a familiar feeling that made me feel…odd.
Kyle dragged his luggage behind me, looking at something on his phone. It seemed whatever it was had his attention hooked, because he was walking straight towards a trash can. Instead of warning him, I took out my phone and pressed record.
The scene was even funnier. The trash can was immobile, as it was fixed to the ground, so he basically stubbed his toe. Hard. I burst out in laughter as he glared at me, under the pitiful-and a few amusement filled- eyes of the crowd.
'Isn't that a classic." I heard a familiar female voice behind me. I turned around sharply.
'Cynthia?"
'Hello, Caleb."
'You idiot! Why didn't you warn me that…" his voice trailed off after he saw Cynthia.
'Isn't she the girl you jumped out of the car to save the other day?"
********
I sat cross legged on the boarding area, waiting for Kyle to get a snack. His appetite for food just kept on increasing. Cynthia sat in front of me, her eyes never leaving mine. I was eating a hotdog.
'Alright. What do you want?" I said, finishing the last piece of the snack. I did a half-hearted toss of the wrap into the trash can, and surprisingly, it entered. 'Hoop." I smiled in a celebratory manner.
'I just wanted to thank you." Cynthia replied, straightening her clothes. 'You helped save my life that day, and I kinda owe you for that." She took out a small box from her dress. I creased my brows as she handed it to me.
Inside was a Cartier watch, probably worth thousands of dollars. I stared at it for a while, and handed it back to her.
'I can't accept that." I said simply, searching for Kyle with my eyes.
'Why not? Too little for you?"
I felt the pain behind that statement. A pang of guilt gnawed at my chest, and I sighed, collecting back the box from her.
'It's just expensive. And that day, it was my intrusive thoughts that took over. I was merely doing what a…."
Friend? Was I about to say friend? I bit my inner lip, wondering what I'd tell the blonde haired damsel in front of me.
'We're not friends. I know. More like a good client." She shrugged. 'Anyways, that was what I wanted. I have a flight to catch in a few hours, so I'll get going. And you don't have to jump out of your car to save me next time." She got up, smiling devilishly, and walking so fast I lost sight of her in the crowd within seconds. I felt a weird feeling pool at the bottom of my stomach.
‘We're not friends. I know.'
The words kept ringing in my head as I waited for Kyle. Some unknown part of me wanted to stop her, ask her what she meant.
She seemed like someone whose life had steeled, and she reminded me of Helena.
Speaking of which….
I took out my phone, and dialed her number.
