Chapter 95: Where did it all go wrong?
CALEB.
'The scroll has been taken already. So your words are useless. I should have given you someone who is familiar with the arts. You're competent, and I thought it best to use someone I know." His voice was as smooth as the silk shirt he had on. For once, he didn't dress like he had murdered a thousand people while eating croissants in France with a beautiful woman at his side.
He looked normal.
I glanced up at him. 'I am flattered."
My voice was laced with sarcasm. At this point, I didn't really care. I looked up at the man in front of me. Sudden indignation surged through my veins. I wanted to get out of here. Away from the devil. Now that I think about it, a lot of weird things happened in our family that nobody questioned. But we all knew the source. A whole lot of shady stuff went on in our house, and everyone kept quiet, for too long.
That's gonna change.
'I'll only let you off the punishment because it was my fault, and you're family. Uncle Kelly doesn't let people off the hook." Such a menacing tone. I wondered how this man slept at night. I nodded slowly.
'Thank you, Uncle."
I'd be honest, I was expecting a graver punishment.
Two days of torture didn't sound like Uncle Kelly at all.
He motioned for the guards around him to untie me, while watching me with his gaze that shifted ever so slightly. The emotions in those eyes were always unreadable. After they were done, I crawled to the bed, because my knees were basically too weak to support my weight. I could hear Uncle Kelly chuckled. 'Leave Dr. Flora to me." He muttered, but I heard him loud and clear.
I raised my head up. 'Huh?"
He walked back to the bed, keeping his gaze on mine.
'I know everything that happened, Caleb. Leave Dr. Flora to me. Let her go. Kyle will be fine." His gray eyes glowed slightly, and I flinched…
What the…
I nodded. I didn't want to know. I didn't.
He left, shutting the door to the dungeon with a loud bang.
There were two other voices that sounded behind the door.
'You're being irrational, Kelly. You don't expect someone with no experience whatsoever to find something of that sort."
It was feminine, a little elderly. My eyes were too weak to look back, so I shut them, relying only on my sense of sound.
'You will not tell me what I can and cannot do." He spat.
The woman grumbled silently, but didn't retort.
'She has a point. Caleb did nothing wrong. You were the lazy one." A male voice this time, a little younger.
'Can we not talk about this here?" Uncle Kelly asked through gritted teeth.
The sound of retreating footsteps released my struggle of consciousness, and I drifted into a deep dark sleep.
On the third day, the door to the dungeon opened so abruptly that I woke up with a start, shielding my eyes from the blinding light outside. My heart pounded painfully from the rush of adrenaline.
'Caleb!" I heard a familiar feminine voice.
I sat up, waiting for my eyes to adjust to the brightness. 'Look at you!! Oh that monster! I can't believe he did this!"
Brielle.
'Brielle?" I called, trying to reach out to her and be sure. She grabbed my palm almost immediately, and I could feel the wetness on her face.
'Yes. It's me. Let's go home." She pulled me up, handing me a cup of water and a mug of steaming coffee.
Sweet sweet coffee.
By the time she had led me out of the dungeon, I was better revived. I could feel my heartbeat, and my limbs were working better.
Isolation is a deadly disease.
********
'How's Kyle doing?" I asked as soon as we got to the house.
After the incident, we took him to one of the special units Dr. Flora worked with. He had been unconscious since then, and each passing day increased my anger at Dr. Flora.
'He's…stable. At least. But he's still not awake. He keeps muttering something though, just one name." She said, emptying her grocery cart on the kitchen counter.
'What name?"
'Magnus."
I froze.
Magnus? 'As in Magnus the name?" I remembered repeating that name when Michael tried to kill Brielle. Werewolves seemed to have an affiliation whoever that was.
'Yeah. And when he does, he starts twitching. As if he's fighting whoever it is in his subconscious. I'm scared Caleb. What if he never wakes up?"
'He will. It's just a matter of time."
I tried so hard to believe that. What if he never actually woke up? 'Who told Uncle Kelly about Kyle?" The question left my lips as soon as it re-entered my thoughts. Then again, I shouldn't be too surprised. He was Uncle Kelly.
Brielle paused, staring at me. 'No one. Only Julia knows about his transformations. And she's far away in Europe."
Doesn't mean she can't be a snitch.
The evening went by a lot faster than I anticipated, and the next morning, we drove down to the hospital to see Kyle.
He'd been through so much in such a short amount of time.
'He's a lot more stable than he was when you guys brought him in. He could regain consciousness in a few hours, or latest, tomorrow morning." The doctor who was assigned to him spoke, as me and Brielle stood in front of him, arms and fingers crossed.
'Thank you, doctor." Brielle said, walking over to his bed. Kyle was pale, and his hair had turned full on white. He was twitching, his fingers trembling slightly. He looked like he was caught in a dream, where he had to get away but didn't know how to. My gut twisted with each of his motions. He was changing…again.
'Kyle…" Brielle stroked his hair, a small tear falling down her cheek.
I ran my hands through my hair. Where did it all go wrong?
Did we really deserve all this?
Mom….why did you leave us?
HELENA.
I'll definitely be trying out werewolf foods again. I woke up later in the evening, feeling as fly as ever. Aaron and Luna were in the living room, discussing as always. Tyrus was absorbed in the TV show about elves. The scenery was beautiful.
Aaron caught sight of me and smiled. Oh, my knees almost gave out.
'Are you done giving birth?" He teased, giving his signature smirk. I frowned immediately, tossing the nearest pillow I could find. 'You're such a bully." I grumbled.
'No, Luna's the bully. I'm the sweet, loving, talented wolf." He pulled me close, making me sit on his lap and hugging my waist. My skin was burning from the sensation. Luna stared at us with no emotion, but I was prepared for the sarcasm.
'And I'm a spoon." She said, glaring.
I giggled almost immediately.
'You'll find love, it's magical enough." I said.
'No, I won't."
