Chapter 76: I Didn't.
AARON.
'My name is Draco. Not like the vampire, just Draco. We work for a company in Hulvey. And I'm sure you've heard about them." He said, shoving his hands into his pockets. 'I knew I'd seen you before, and I remember now."
I creased my eyebrows. What was this fucker talking about? I suddenly felt nauseous. My heart rate had been increasing for an extended period of time, and it was starting to wear off. 'What do you mean?" I asked, genuinely confused.
'I mean, that you have a knack for getting yourself involved with things that are higher, more complex than you think you are. But let me make this clearer. Hospital?"
It all clicked. No wonder his scent was familiar. I was around him for a little over 15 minutes, so the memory of him wasn't etched into my memory. He, or they, were the ones who tried to kill Veronica. Maybe not once, maybe not twice. The ones who left her paralyzed, struggling to recover. Which meant he was probably here for her too. Only thing was, Veronica wasn't here. If they were searching for her, their first thoughts should have been in Hulvey. Why did they come here?
'She's not here. I'm sure you must have known by now." I said, exhaling and crossing my arms. 'What do you want from her anyways?" Last time I recalled, Veronica had discovered some drug and these men were after her because she had refused to hand over her experiments.
'I doubt it's something you'd be interested in. But what I am interested in, is how you're able to wield such strength. It's fascinating, almost unreal." He said, leaning against the wall.
I didn't have time for this.
Helena and hopefully Luna would be back home anytime soon, and meeting this situation wouldn't be the best thing to happen. 'You have got to be kidding me." Of course I was unreal. I'm a fucking werewolf.
I took a deep breath and walked towards the kitchen, grabbing a glass of water. 'I'm done with petty talk. Either you leave now, never to return, or I'll kill the five of you and feast on your bones." My voice was nonchalant, but I meant every word.
It'd been a while since I tasted human flesh. My stomach rumbled.
My words seemed to have triggered something in the leader, and he hurried the rest of his men out of the house. 'Remember, we'll be back." He said with scorn as they slammed the door shut.
I plopped on the couch, chugging down another glass of water. The house was silent, but I could hear everything. It was
.. annoying. It was unusual for me to hear the most minute sounds, but it felt like I could even hear atoms fight with each other.
My senses were heightened drastically. My mind drifted to the fight I had with that wolf a few nights ago. The energy that surged through me at the last moment was unreal. It was like I had drunk a full bottle of the moon's essence, even though that was unlikely. Getting a full bottle of that would take decades of hard work, and I probably couldn't metabolize that much in one gulp.
I sighed, brushing aside the thoughts. Tyrus squealed from Luna's room in a questioning manner. 'Come on! They're gone now." I said in a squeaky voice of my own. She showed up a few seconds later, floating around the room.
'Are you hungry?" I asked. I was getting hungry. She nodded in response, and I dashed into the kitchen.
Been a while in here, this would be nice.
Around 7pm, Helena walked in with Luna, both chatting happily about something I couldn't make out. I was seated in the living room, watching what I understood as a documentary on the history of paranormal activity. Her voice made me jump from my seat, and hide in the kitchen. I wanted to surprise her.
'I can't believe you did that Luna. He looked so scared, oh my God." Helena said, giggling. She dropped her work bag on the couch. 'What if he tells the police?" She said, walking over to the dining and washing her hands.
Luna scoffed. 'What is he gonna tell them? A werewolf attacked him? Who would listen?" She laughed. 'That'll teach him not to bully women. Men like him disgust me."
'Oh Luna. Thank you though, I don't know what I'd have done if you didn't show up." Helena replied, her voice filled with emotion. I frowned. What happened out there?
'Hey Tyrus. Who turned on the TV for you?" She said, walking over to the TV and checking the channel. Suddenly she froze, and glanced at Luna. 'Aaron." Helena dashed straight for Luna's room, and I remembered the broken rifles in the hallway. 'Oh. My. God. Luna!" She yelled in horror.
I palmed my face. Just one stupid slip up. Luna got up, but slowly, and walked towards the hall. 'I told you he'd be fine." She shrugged, staring at the rifles. She creased her brows. 'Aaron touched these. Something happened while we were gone. Tyrus?" She called.
Tyrus glared at me from the living room and floated to meet Luna. 'What happened here?" Luna demanded. Helena stood, leaning on the door frame that led to the stairs. She looked totally lost in thoughts.
'She can't speak, Luna." Helena said quietly. 'Something's off."
'Well, isn't that a little obvious?" Luna retorted.
'No, I mean off as in, way too off. Do they look like magical rifles?"
At this point I got tired. I walked out of the kitchen and headed straight for the hall.
'That's because they were humans. Five men to be precise." My voice rumbled low across the hall. Helena turned her head sharply at me, and her eyes widened in surprise. Emotions flickered from happiness to relief, and another one I couldn't quite understand.
Everything seemed to slow down for a moment. She ran towards me in one swift motion, and I felt my heart squeeze. She crashed into my chest, and I hugged her tightly. I could feel her heart beating, hard.
'I'm okay….I'm fine.." I whispered, soothing her nerves. She was trembling slightly, and it made my stomach lurch. Luna stared at both of us with an unreadable expression, and I mouthed a thank you to her. She nodded, and walked towards her room. I released
'What happened? You were unconscious for three days. I thought you had crossed to the other side." Helena said, laughing nervously. I could smell her fear. Fear of losing me. 'Don't do that again..don't don't don't…." She tapped my chest lightly. I just wanted to hug her again. Kiss her on the forehead and tell her everything will be alright. I didn't want to play games anymore. I wanted to come clean and make her mine.
'I won't. Don't worry." No more being stubborn. I had to be more rational with my decisions now.
'Thank you."
We spoke a little more about the things that happened during the time I was unconscious, and she said I kept muttering something. Some words she couldn't understand. She also said Luna would react slightly to the words, and leave the room immediately.
'That's actually absurd." What could I possibly have said to trigger such a reaction?
'It was. And I still don't understand why you kept repeating it." Luna said from behind us. 'Anyways, that'll be a discussion for another day. Who broke into the house?" She asked simply, sitting on the couch in the living room.
I totally forgot about those idiots.
'A group of men that said they were looking for Veronica. One of them was the guy who tried to kill her in the hospital."
'What? I thought that monster went to jail? How did he…" Helena said in bewilderment.
'It's a corrupt system. What can you say? If they work for the government, even worse. They probably have immunity to things like this." Luna cut her off, a thoughtful look splayed on her face. 'Now that I think about it, we never actually found out who gave you wolfsbane that day."
'She's right. A whole lot of shady shit is going on." Helena said, picking up her phone. 'I need to talk to Veronica."
And with that, she left, leaving me and Luna in the room. She cast a weird glance at me. 'Aaron, can you possibly remember anything that happened that night? Before you passed out."
'I've said everything I did."
Actually, I didn't.
