Chapter 71: At the Library
CALEB.
Kyle asked, his voice low and cautious. His senses were on high alert, his eyes scanning every corner for any sign of danger.
I pulled out a map of the library's layout, which he had painstakingly recreated from memory of Helena's description. I pointed to a section marked 'Ancient Texts."
'The scroll should be in the back, near the restricted section. Let's stick together and be quick." I had only hypothesized this, but you can never be too sure.
We navigated through the dimly lit aisles, with slow and methodical steps. I allowed my fingers trace the spines of countless old books, many of which had titles in languages I couldn't read. I studied a few languages, but I couldn't even remember some.
I tried so hard to stay focused on the task at hand, but the sense of unease that had been growing since we entered the library was hard to ignore. I hadn't felt this uneasy here before.
As we reached the section marked on the map, I began to search the shelves with my eyes more intently.
I decided to pull out book after book, checking each one for any sign of the scroll we were looking for. Kyle stood guard, his body tense and ready to react to any threat.
Minutes turned into hours, and the tension between grew thicker and thicker we could almost taste it. I could feel Kyle's frustration mounting, his growls becoming more frequent and his movements more agitated.
He'd better get a hold of himself.
Suddenly, Kyle's demeanor changed. He stiffened, his breathing growing heavier and more erratic. I glanced up at him, getting ready to yell for him to calm down. I paused. I noticed his eyes were flashing with an unnatural intensity, a clear sign that his werewolf instincts were taking over.
Shit.
'Kyle, are you okay?" I asked, edging towards him with concern.
Kyle growled, his voice deepening as the transformation took hold. 'We need to leave. Now."
He had to be joking. Just a few more minutes of searching and we could find the breakthrough.
I tried to reason with him. 'We're so close. Just a little longer."
But Kyle's transformation was accelerating. His muscles bulged, and his features became more feral. He slammed a fist into a nearby shelf, sending books crashing to the floor. 'I said we need to leave!" he roared, his eyes glowing fiercely.
I backed away, realizing the danger. 'Alright, we're going," I said, trying to calm his brother. 'Let's get out of here."
He managed to hold himself down as we made our way towards the entrance.
We moved through the library, with Kyle's growls echoing off the walls. I could see the struggle in his brother's eyes, the fight to control the beast within.
As we burst through the entrance and into the fading daylight, Kyle collapsed to his knees, his breathing ragged.
I placed a hand on his shoulder, offering support. 'We'll come back another time," I said gently. 'Together."
Kyle shook his head, his eyes returning to normal. 'Thanks, Caleb. But I don't want to go back in there."
'What's wrong?"
'I felt something…something isn't right in there. I don't wanna go back." He was trembling now, and his shivers sent equal tremors down my spine.
I shook my head. 'We'll figure it out. Just don't give up on me, alright?"
We had left the old library behind, the scroll of vengeance still hidden within its walls, waiting for their return.
---
As the sun set and darkness enveloped the forest, Caleb and Kyle found themselves back at their temporary camp, a small clearing they had set up with minimal supplies. They lit a fire, its flickering flames casting long shadows across their faces.
Kyle stared into the fire, his expression a mix of frustration and regret. 'I can't believe I lost control like that," he muttered.
Caleb looked at him with understanding. 'It's not your fault. The library is filled with powerful artifacts and dark energy. It's bound to affect you more than it does me."
Kyle shook his head. 'I need to be stronger. If I can't control myself, how am I supposed to help you find the scroll?"
'You are strong, Kyle. Stronger than you realize. We'll get through this together, just like we always have," Caleb reassured him.
They sat in silence for a while, the crackling of the fire the only sound. Caleb's mind wandered back to their childhood, the innocent games they used to play in the same forest. He remembered the day they first discovered the library, hidden away from the world, a place that quickly became their secret hideout.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a warm summer day, and the forest was alive with the sounds of birds and rustling leaves. Caleb and Kyle, then just children, had been exploring further than they ever had before. The discovery of the old library was like stumbling upon a hidden treasure.
'Look at this place!" young Caleb had exclaimed, his eyes wide with wonder.
Kyle, always the more adventurous of the two, had immediately started climbing the ivy-covered walls, eager to see what secrets the building held. 'Come on, Caleb! Let's see what's inside!"
They had spent hours exploring the library, marveling at the endless rows of books and the mysterious artifacts scattered throughout. It became their sanctuary, a place where they could escape from the world and let their imaginations run wild.
As the years went by, the library's significance grew. It was there that they discovered the existence of the scroll of vengeance, a powerful artifact said to hold the key to defeating any enemy. The legend of the scroll became a focal point of their adventures, and they vowed to find it one day.
We decided to camp outside the house in case Kyle felt a bit claustrophobic.
Now, sitting by the fire, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The memories of our childhood adventures reminded him of why they were doing this. More especially, why Uncle Kelly chose me for the mission.
We were not just searching for a powerful artifact; we were trying to protect the people we loved. And each other. Marcus said that the Luna festival was increasingly dangerous the closer it got, and his theory about werewolves sacrificing humans turned out to be right.
The scroll could protect us, according to him. It was definitely worth the shot.
'We'll find the scroll, Kyle," I said, breaking the silence. 'We'll find it, and we'll use it to protect everyone."
Kyle looked up, his eyes reflecting the firelight. 'I know we will. And I promise, next time I won't let my instincts get the better of me."
'Better. I wish I had gotten your outburst on camera. You little scary cat." I teased, tossing a piece of wood into the fire.
'Oh please. As if you could go in there totally alone." He retorted, snarling.
We spent the rest of the evening planning our next move. We knew we would have to return to the library, but this time we would be better prepared.
I suggested that we bring along some protective charms and artifacts to help counteract the dark energy of the place.
Kyle nodded in agreement, and went off into the woods for some exercise. I decided to do some research.
The fire died down and the night grew colder, and we retreated to our makeshift shelter. I could've just gone into the house but I didn't want to leave Kyle alone.
I lay awake for a long time, staring up at the stars and thinking about the challenges ahead. I knew that their journey was far from over, but with Kyle by his side, I was confident that we could face anything.
The next day, we rose early, the morning light filtering through the trees. We packed up our camp and set off once again, determined to find the scroll of vengeance. This time, we were better equipped, carrying with them a makeshift charm I had searched up online.
We paused abruptly in our tracks. Kyle sniffed the air, curious.
'Someone else is here."
