Chapter 54: Trouble.
AARON
Helena walked in behind me, saw the map on the table and gasped.
'Where did you find that?" There was both recognition and great fear in her eyes.
I glanced down at the map, and my heart jumped into my chest. This was….Lunaville.
'Tyrus went berserk after she left your shoulder. She followed some sort of energy to your basement, and I found this. Now that I think about it, I never noticed your aura."
I sensed Helena's aura sometimes, but I just believed she had more energy than most humans. Guess I was wrong.
Luna splayed her hands on the map. 'Have any idea where it's from?"
Helena nodded slowly, skepticism present in her demeanor. 'My dad used to tell me bedtime stories with it often. I always felt like it was a weirdly detailed map, but I never really thought about it. After he died, I never saw the map again." She said slowly, as if recounting the events of her childhood.
'Who uses a map to tell bedtime stories? That's insanely absurd." I stroked my chin. What sort of stories would a man tell his daughter with a map?
'My dad was weird, but I loved him. Besides, those stories always put me to bed." She folded her arms, creasing her eyebrows.
'What kind of bedtime stories?" Luna craned her neck, curious. I was also curious.
Helena paused, shutting her eyes. 'It's a faint memory. He stopped telling me stories when I was 8." Her voice was a mixture of melancholy and surprise.
'You have to try and remember. It could help us solve a lot of things." Luna said, softening her gaze.
Helena nodded. She took a deep breath and said,
'He used to talk about werewolves."
Luna and I exchanged glances.
'What?"
We said simultaneously.
Helena flinched at our outburst.
'That's what I remember. I never really thought about it because I believed werewolves weren't real, but apparently I was wrong." She whispered.
'This is pretty incredible news. Which means your dad must have some sort of connection to Lunaville, or he just found this in some old library." Luna said, rubbing her forehead.
'The old library." Helena said quietly. 'It all makes sense now." She glanced at Helena.
'What do you mean?" I asked, puzzled.
'You're right. That explains it all." Luna concurred.
'What do you think we should do?"
I stared at both of them as they conversed with each other, leaving me in the dark.
I knew Helena had something to do with the old library and the scroll, but her father getting this map from there didn't really mean anything. Did it?
'I'm not sure. But this is enough evidence. Can you remember any other weird thing your dad did?" Luna asked.
Helena struggled for words, and I could sense something was wrong. Then, I spotted Tyrus under the table, her blue eyes glowing brightly and at…Helena.
The hell were these two doing?
'That's enough questioning for now. It's 6am for goodness sake. Helena, you need to get ready for work." I stood in between Helena and Tyrus under the coffee table. Her eyes instantly returned to normal, and Luna grunted slightly behind me.
So they were using magic on her.
I patted Helena's shoulder, and led her up to her room.
'Just stay in here for a while. I understand how overwhelming all this can seem. But I promise you, we'll be fine." I said reassuringly, as she stood behind her bedroom door.
She nodded softly, trying to catch her breath.
'Thanks Aaron."
I smiled faintly.
With reluctance, I walked back downstairs and found a very furious Luna sitting cross legged on the couch.
'What the hell was that?" I roared as soon as I got within earshot.
CALEB.
'Are you saying we can't do anything for now?"
'Precisely. He's surprisingly passed every physical examination, but he still has a long way to go before we can declare his condition stable." Dr. Flora said. There was something a little too resolute in her tone. I didn't like it.
'I'm not giving up on him." I said, clenching my teeth.
'I didn't say you should. Just be prepared for the worst." Her eyes were devoid of emotion. 'Have a nice day, Caleb."
She said before walking off.
I stood at the door of Kyle's ward, staring at his twitching body on the bed. Brielle had gone back to college. It was for the best, I didn't want her worrying too much about Kyle.
There was something completely off about what was going on with him. Dr. Flora said his transformation was almost complete, and if he could survive through it, his condition would be stable. It didn't mean Kyle would remain the same, and that possibility haunted me.
I drove back to the office. It'd been two weeks since I left Henley and came here.
'Sir, what a pleasant surprise. I thought you were supposed to stay for another two months?" Jessica beamed at me the moment I walked past her station. She straightened up in her seat, smiling enthusiastically.
I glanced at her coldly, and she flinched, returning back to her work. I was in no mood for greetings.
I sat lazily on my desk, grabbing the first bottle of whiskey that lay beside it, inviting me. The whiskey burned my throat as it slid down, but the burn was nothing compared to the rage going on in my heart.
How had everything changed so much?
I took out my phone and called Marcus. He picked up on the first ring.
'What's going on mio fratello?"
I could basically see him smiling on the other end.
'You sound happy. A vacation was just what you needed." I said, sipping another shot of whiskey.
'Ay, you know how it is. Maria and the kids love it here. And they have good food too." I heard a faint crunch in the background.
'Glad to know."
'Caleb, what is it?"
'I wouldn't want to disturb your sweet family vacation, but..."
'Bullshit. You and I know you'd be more than ready to crash this party. But it'll be for something important. So come on, tell me what it is." The background noise faded, until I couldn't hear it anymore. He had moved positions.
'Some strange stuff is going on with Kyle. A few weeks ago he said he was bitten by a werewolf. Julia witnessed the transformation and told him. Now, he's out of control. He's literally turning into an animal."
My head was pounding.
Marcus sighed, taking a brief pause.
'Ay, I've been hearing of things like this for a while. Never expected it to happen so soon though." His voice sounded distant, as if he was trying to remember something.
'What do you mean so soon?"
