Chapter 109: I’m Ready
HELENA
I nodded, my heart beating faster. 'What about you and Aaron? What's the plan once we're inside?"
'We stick together," Aaron said firmly, his voice leaving no room for doubt. 'We don't separate, no matter what. If something goes wrong, we fight our way out."
My stomach twisted at the thought. I wasn't a fighter like Luna and Aaron. I had trained, but I had never been in a real battle, never relied on my own strength to survive. The thought terrified me, but I pushed the fear down, focusing on the rhythm of my footsteps, the cool night air, and the steady presence of my friends.
As we reached the edge of town, the streets turned into a narrow dirt road leading into the dense woods. The trees loomed overhead, their branches casting long shadows in the moonlight. The road ahead was dark and foreboding, but there was no turning back now.
'From here on out, we move quickly and quietly," Luna instructed in a low voice. 'We don't want to attract any unwanted attention."
I nodded, feeling a new wave of anxiety. I could do this. I had to do this. We continued down the road, the silence between us filled with unspoken fears and hopes. The forest around us seemed to close in as we walked, the shadows growing deeper, the air colder. The only sounds were the crunch of leaves underfoot and the distant hoot of an owl.
I felt my heart pounding in my chest. Each step seemed louder, my breath quick and shallow. I tried to focus on my surroundings, on the feel of the ground beneath my feet, the cool night air on my skin. But my thoughts kept drifting back to LunaVille, to the werewolves there, and to the fact that I was about to enter their territory, pretending to be one of them.
I glanced over at Aaron, his face showing concentration. His eyes, usually warm, were cold and distant. He was scanning the trees, every muscle tense and ready. He had always been the protector, keeping us safe. But now, I saw the strain in his eyes, the weight of responsibility he felt.
'Aaron," I whispered, my voice barely audible over our footsteps.
He looked at me, his expression softening just a bit. 'Yeah?"
'Do you really think we can pull this off?"
Aaron stopped walking and turned to face me. 'Look, Helena, I'm not going to lie. This is dangerous. But Luna and I have been to LunaVille before. We know what to expect. And more importantly, we believe in you. You've got to believe in yourself too."
I swallowed and nodded. 'I'm trying. It's just… hard."
Aaron gave me a small, encouraging smile. 'I know. But you're stronger than you think. We wouldn't have asked you to come if we didn't believe you could do this."
Luna, who had been walking ahead, turned back to us. 'We need to keep moving. The faster we get to the safe house, the better."
Aaron nodded, and we continued on, the path winding deeper into the woods. The trees seemed thicker, the shadows darker. I felt the weight of the forest pressing in on me, the air growing colder with each step. I pulled my jacket tighter, trying to ward off the chill.
As we walked, Luna started to explain more about LunaVille. 'It's a place built on strength and dominance. Werewolves there are always testing each other, always looking for a way to climb the ranks. You have to be on your guard all the time. No one is ever completely safe, not even among their own pack."
I nodded, trying to take in everything Luna was saying. I knew I needed to be prepared for whatever lay ahead. But no amount of preparation could completely ease the fear I felt. 'What happens if they find out I'm not really one of them?"
Luna's expression was grim. 'We don't let that happen. But if it does… we fight. We fight hard to get out of there."
My stomach twisted at the thought, but I nodded. I had to trust Luna and Aaron, trust that they would get me through this. They had always been there for me, always protected me. I just had to believe in them—and in myself.
We walked in silence for a while, the only sound the crunch of leaves underfoot and the occasional rustle of branches overhead. The forest was thick, the trees towering above us, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. The moon was high in the sky now, casting an eerie glow through the canopy, lighting up the path ahead in patches of silver.
Aaron stopped suddenly, raising his hand as a silent signal for us to halt. I froze, my heart leaping into my throat. I strained my ears, listening for any sound, any sign of danger. But the forest was silent, the only sound a distant owl call.
'What is it?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Aaron held up a hand for silence, his eyes scanning the darkness around us. After a moment, he relaxed a bit, lowering his hand. 'Nothing. Just thought I heard something."
Luna nodded, her expression tense. 'We're getting close to the border. We need to be careful from here on out. Keep your eyes and ears open."
I nodded, my heart still pounding. I could feel the tension in the air, the weight of what we were about to do. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. I had to be strong, had to be ready for whatever came next.
As we continued, the forest seemed to grow darker, the trees closing in around us. The air was thick with tension, every shadow seeming to hide some unseen threat. I could feel my nerves fraying, my heart racing. But I kept going, kept moving forward. There was no turning back now.
Finally, after what felt like hours, we reached a small clearing. Luna raised her hand, signaling us to stop. 'This is it," she said quietly. 'The border. Once we cross, we're in LunaVille territory."
I stared at the clearing, my heart in my throat. This was it. This was the moment we had been preparing for. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself.
'You ready?" Luna asked, her eyes on me.
I nodded, though I wasn't sure if I was answering Luna's question or trying to convince myself. 'I'm ready."
