Chapter 46: Destiny.
HELENA.
Aaron shrugged. 'It's not like I'm running away. I don't want it at all. It shouldn't be hard for them to understand." He forked another pancake, covered it in syrup and brought it to my mouth.
I felt so babied.
Nonetheless, I ate it.
'How about I tell you a little story. The year before my parents died, I had this fear of the road. I hated the streets. My mom said I was too pampered, and I'd eventually have to master the way of the streets. Sometimes that statement made me think they planned their death. But no parent would want to leave their child alone in this cruel, cold world." He turned his fork towards the bacon, and I subconsciously ate it from his fork.
'The night they died, I never actually wanted to go out on the streets. I didn't want to leave Henley. But if I stayed, I'd have suffered. My Nana believed I was destined for such, so she supported me the best way she could. I didn't want it, but I had to do it. And now, look at me, eating pancakes and bacon from your hand. Maybe if I stayed in Henley, I'd have never gone through what I did, and I wouldn't have met you."
He chuckled. So lowly I could feel the vibrations of his voice in my stomach. Then he looked at me.
I was looking at the half empty plate of pancakes.
'Do you think we were supposed to meet each other?"
That question threw me off balance. I almost choked on the half eaten pancake in my mouth, and hurriedly drank the orange juice from one of the glasses. It tasted surprisingly good.
'I…I don't know. Maybe we were." I managed to say. 'I mean I'd have never known that werewolves existed, and I'd probably never learn to cook as good as you do. You still owe me lessons though." I poked his arm.
'Sure thing. I'm sorry this had to happen to you." He touched my arm, the places where the critters had bit me. The pink scars were fading already.
I sucked in a sharp breath. I wanted to lean into his touch. I loved how his fingers felt on my skin. They were soft, not rugged or hard as most guy's were.
'I'm sorry."y
'You don't have to apologize anymore. I'm fine."
'You're paralyzed."
'I'll be better in an hour."
'Doesn't change anything."
'Aaron!" I laughed. 'You're acting like a big baby."
'That's because I am a big baby. I really feel bad. More pancakes?" He pushed the fork to the plate again. I wanted to say no, I was full already.
But I didn't.
I finished both plates, satisfied and happy. I was surprised that we weren't interrupted by either Luna or Veronica.
'Thank you for breakfast." I said as he left the room with the tray. He turned around, smiled and said, 'My services come at a price."
I flung my bedroom slippers at him. He laughed heartily, swaying his hips as he walked out.
By noon, I regained the sensation in my legs, and walked downstairs. Everywhere was calm. Luna shot me a glance, and smiled faintly.
'Yayyy you can walk again!" Vee beamed the moment she saw me. She reached for my hip and began poking.
'Stop that. It's not like I was permanently paralyzed." I scoffed, swatting away her arm.
'You were poisoned. Same thing."
'It's not."
'Is too."
I made a show of trying to chase her, and she almost fell. We both giggled and sat on the couch.
Suddenly, I remembered something.
'Aaron?!" I called.
'Yeah?"
'Come here this instant."
Within seconds, he walked into the living room, wiping his hands clean. He's always in the kitchen, so I felt replaced.
'What do you need milady?"
'Who's your lady?" Vee snapped.
'Veronica…allow the man speak." I smiled.
'You said you had a special announcement this morning. What was it about?" I titled my head and smirked, my eyes burning with anticipation.
He mirrored my movements, but his was much more….charming. I blushed and looked away.
'Alright." He sat in the middle of the living room. 'I got a job."
Echoes of surprise filled the room. A job? As what? A meat hunter? It was absurd, but it was likely.
'Where did you get it? And as what?" Vee said, visibly surprised.
'As a chef."
'Oh. That makes sense. Where?" I was happy he got a job, but that meant he wouldn't be at home often anymore.
Who was I kidding? He had a hometown who was on the search for him.
'Some fancy Italian restaurant on the South side." He shrugged. 'They're offering $500 a month for a professional."
My jaw dropped, and so did Vee's.
$500???
That's….huge.
'But you're no professional." Vee scoffed. Of course she did.
'You've tasted the young man's cooking." I retorted.
'A few home dishes doesn't mean anything. When do you start?" She asked.
'Monday. Veronica, sooner or later you're gonna admit I am good at what I do. And you will not be getting my free lessons." Aaron said, lifting up his head. He looked so cute doing that.
'I'm impressed." Luna finally spoke up. 'I was afraid you wanted to teach school children."
'What makes you say that?" I asked her.
'Because the only thing that'll suit him is people as stubborn as he is." She shrugged, brushing off a strand of hair on her face.
'Haha, very funny." Aaron mocked.
She glared at him, and he glared back.
'That's amazing Aaron. At least you'll show the world your talent."
'Ahem, world is a strong word."
'Veronica…"
She raised her hands in surrender.
'Alright, it's lunch time. What are we eating?" I was already getting hungry.
'Lasagna?" Aaron asked.
'Are you sure you can make that?" Luna said, getting off the couch.
'Who says I can't? I'm an Italian chef now."
I laughed, as he got up to go back into the kitchen. He paused beside me, smiled and gave a tiny wink. The audacity of this human. I was smiling, but I was worried.
I hope this happiness will last.
