Chapter 53: The Connection.
AARON
We got to the house in record time, after Helena's countless protests that my legs were too long and I was sprinting not walking.
'That's not fair. Walk slower. I'll trip and fall." She grumbled, folding her arms. This woman was a work of art.
I'll say it how many times I wish.
'I'm walking the slowest I can go." I made a dramatic show of slowing down my legs in the air and she smacked me. I laughed.
'You're such a show off." She folded her arms even tighter and moved faster.
I swung the paper bag, smiling at her as she moved.
Luna leaned on the railings on the porch, with her little blue skinned minion.
'You two are making this a habit." She said lazily, patting the creature's back.
'We didn't do anything. I was attacked by some men." Helena said, climbing the stairs leading up to the front door.
'Attacked?" Luna asked, furrowing her eyebrows in concern.
'Some men tried to rape me. But Aaron showed up just in time."
I raised my hands in pretend surrender. 'Guilty as charged."
Luna looked at me for a while and sniffed. Her eyes darkened for a second before shifting back to normal. She was about to say something when Helena jumped.
'What is that?" She pointed at the creature. She looked as intrigued as she was scared.
The creature squeaked and jumped on her arm, but she didn't flinch.
'That's Tyrus." Luna said, straightening up. She glanced at me with a judging look.
What did I do?
'Tyrus?" Helena asked with a puzzled expression.
The creature nodded enthusiastically on her shoulder. 'That's actually a cute name."
'I found Tyrus in the woods around the time Aaron bumped into you. She has proven herself useful." Luna began, walking inside the house. I and Helena followed.
'How useful is she?" I asked. I was too curious.
'She can sense external energy from miles away. And not just normal energy, the kind that's extremely powerful. Like demons and stuff." Luna said lazily.
'Hm. Interesting." I stroked my chin.
'She's not dispensable to you." She warned.
'I never made such intentions known." I shrugged, smirking slightly.
Inside the farmhouse was warm. A sharp contrast to the blistering cold outside. Helena sank into the couch, probably tired of everything that happened during the day.
I ran straight to the kitchen to get a glass of water for her, and cold orange juice.
She accepted them tiredly, and retired to her room a few moments later.
'You killed him." Luna whispered as she walked past me. 'And that's a blunder."
She was right.
By the time I heard Helena screaming at me to stop, I had severed Simon's nerves. A lot of them. He would only last a few minutes after we had left, but I was too distracted by Helena to dwell on it.
'I'm sorry. I just….lost it."
I lost control.
The wave of anger rushing over me at that moment was still fresh in my head, and it gave me a pounding headache. Why did Helena affect me so much?
I didn't want Caleb to touch her.
I didn't want Simon to touch her.
Fucking hell, I didn't want another man to even breathe next to her.
I was falling into a trap I knew I might never come out of, and I didn't care.
Luna's eyes softened briefly, before hardening into tough blue diamonds. 'We'll have to deal with the consequences. Don't blame yourself too much. I'm not saying you shouldn't, just not too much. For now, let's just focus on keeping Helena safe. Until you decide to come to your senses." She scolded, walking into her room.
'I'll do whatever it'll take." I muttered, staring at the floor.
I couldn't shake off the feeling of impending doom I had earlier, and it was eating me alive. I needed to be stronger. More in control. If not anything, for Helena.
The next day, I couldn't go to work. Hell, I couldn't even do anything. I called my boss and reported that I was sick. I couldn't go there feeling like this. I'd fucking ruin all the dishes.
The weight of Luna's words held me down like an anvil. Helena was safe, so why was I still angry?
I needed to clear my head.
I stepped out on the porch, breathing in the crisp morning air, the sun shining on the horizon. It was a beautiful morning, but there was nothing beautiful about what was going on within me.
'Aaron?" Helena said groggily. I turned around sharply, and saw her rubbing her eyelids.
'Did I wake you up?" I made an awful lot of noise when I got up this morning.
She shook her head vigorously, her morning hair cascading down her shoulders. 'No, I slept a little too early last night. Remember?"
'Yeah."
A new wave of guilt washed over me.
'I've been thinking about Tyrus." She blurted.
'She's one fascinating being. Could really step up the game for us. But I don't get why Luna didn't make her abilities specific the first time."
'Maybe it didn't occur to her. I'm curious about something though." She narrowed her eyes.
'Which is?" I cast her a side glance.
'It's amazing that she can detect energies, but what if she can detect other things too?"
'Other things like what?"
'I don't know, like emotions."
'Maybe, why?" I understood the depth of her statement, but I didn't want to say things I wasn't sure of.
'I just feel that way. Emotions are a form of energy. Maybe not as powerful but, you get the point." Her eyes were wide awake now, and they stared straight into my soul.
'I get it, but it's unlikely. It's a gift, not something she can necessarily focus on." It was possible, but it would require a lot of time and energy. Luna wouldn't want that.
'Hm. I wish I had some sort of power."
You do. You're taking control of my entire being.
She looked so innocent, so carefree. She'd been through the worst, but she always pulled through. I wanted to take away all her pain. I wanted to be able to stare into those eyes forever. I wanted…. so much.
But I couldn't have that.
'You're already making a difference with your human abilities. I mean look at me, I'd probably be dog meat by now if it wasn't for you. And I know you've impacted a lot of people's lives already. You're special Helena, remember that." I said, grabbing her shoulder.
She leaned into my arms, and her fresh scent permeated my nose. 'Thanks Aaron, for everything."
I squeezed her shoulders. 'Anytime."
We remained in the comfortable silence for a while, our positions not changing. Eventually, Helena left my embrace, leaving me with a void.
'Aaron!"
Luna's voice startled me out of my thoughts. 'Come in here!"
I exchanged glances with Helena, and we both dashed into the house.
Luna sat across the coffee table, with a huge map in the center.
When the heck did she wake up? She looked so concentrated, her brows furrowing at intervals. The map looked…strangely familiar. I had seen it before.
'What's wrong?"
