Your Outfit is Not Sexy
For a few seconds, Jayden fell silent with that question. If he thought about it, he himself was also wondering why he helped Agatha.
Normally, he tended to be indifferent and uncaring towards women, even when someone was in trouble.
But for some reason, that night when he saw Agatha, Jayden felt something different. Especially since Agatha's face reminded him of someone from his childhood, a friend he hadn't seen since the incident back then.
"Isn't it that as human beings, we should help each other?" Jayden chose to express that answer among the many possibilities swirling in his mind. At least it made more sense and didn't have any special meaning that would make Agatha think otherwise.
Agatha nodded, but still couldn't fully believe that it was the real reason.
"I know, but it feels suspicious when a man like you wants to save an ordinary girl like me," Agatha replied, still skeptical.
"It's actually because of that," Jayden responded spontaneously, rather than giving a random answer.
Agatha snorted, her eyebrows furrowed in annoyance. "Because I'm ugly?"
Jayden blinked and almost widened his eyes before restraining the expression. He struggled to swallow his spit, not expecting their thoughts to differ.
"Who said you're ugly?"
Agatha pouted. Jayden ended up asking back. "I am an ordinary girl who is ugly and skinny, right? That's why you pity me and help me."
Isn't that right? Jayden couldn't help but burst into laughter. Agatha, seeing that, immediately raised her eyebrows with a sharp gaze.
"Why are you laughing? Is there something funny?" Agatha grumbled. After a few minutes, the laughter finally subsided.
Jayden shook his head after clearing his throat. "When I said an ordinary girl, I didn't mean it in terms of physical appearance, but rather in terms of attitude. Bars are places where women wear mini dresses, but even then, your clothes were far from being sexy."
"Oh my goodness." Agatha's eyes widened as Jayden spoke so openly. It was an insult beneath the surface of reality.
"It is true, isn't it?" Jayden smiled teasingly. "So I thought it was your first time there. And when I accidentally saw that despicable man targeting you, I felt obligated to help you."
Agatha stirred the remaining tea in her cup. She didn't want to look at Jayden, who was clearly observing her.
"It's a convoluted reason. You should have answered concisely, like because I'm naive, because I'm not attractive, or because you simply like helping women who are new to bars, something like that." Agatha finished her tea in one gulp.
Though irritated for a moment, Agatha couldn't deny the possibility that she was grateful because without Jayden's sensitivity, that night might have become the most hated night of her life.
It didn't matter what reason Jayden had for helping her. Agatha already considered Jayden a hero and was extremely grateful to him.
Jayden smiled softly and then stood up. He took his and Agatha's cups and carried them to the sink.
"I did that so you wouldn't misunderstand. Who knows, perhaps you might think that I had feelings for you, right?"
Agatha spontaneously raised her face with wide eyes. "You're so confident."
Agatha held back the turmoil in her chest because Jayden seemed to know what was in her heart. Or even able to read her facial expressions.
"I did actually think that, to be honest," Agatha thought with regret.
Jayden simply restrained his smile as he finished washing all the cups. "Since everything is clear now, get ready to sleep. Tomorrow is your first day at work. Don't oversleep."
Agatha stood up as Jayden turned around. She nodded in understanding to his statement and immediately walked towards Layla's room. Some of her belongings had already been taken there by Jayden.
"Wait a moment."
"Yes?" Agatha stopped and turned around.
"Goodnight." Jayden's lips curled into a small smile.
Agatha was startled. Her heart almost exploded upon seeing that smile. "Oh, yes. Goodnight to you too."
Agatha nodded briefly and hurried to her room. She didn't want to linger with Jayden, as it would only make her heart unsafe.
Similarly, Jayden immediately rubbed his face, feeling like he was going crazy. Since when did he throw smiles at a woman? Especially someone he had just met like Agatha.
"I thought he was the type of guy who was cold and indifferent, turns out he's quite annoying," Agatha thought to herself after closing the bedroom door.
Agatha took a long breath and stood behind the door. "Unfortunately, I've already fallen for him at first sight."
"Agatha, it seems like your life will be more interesting from now on," she added, then walked over to the bed where Layla was already asleep. She sat there for a moment.
Since the lights in the room were off, Agatha couldn't see clearly what the ambiance of Layla's room was like, which seemed far from her imagination. Agatha briefly looked around before letting out a smile.
"The housing issue is settled, and there's $800 left for phone replacement. If I work here, can I ask for an early salary?" Agatha murmured. Shortly after, she exhaled.
"I'll think about it tomorrow. Today has been exhausting." Agatha decided to lie down.
"Oh, right. I just remembered, Jayden didn't tell me about his job." Agatha stared at the ceiling of the room, noticing the small star-shaped lights. She was momentarily captivated. It was so beautiful, she thought.
In the silence of the night, where sleep had not yet come, Agatha pondered once again. She always used the quietness of the night to daydream until she could fall asleep.
"Could he be the owner of this apartment? Is he a wealthy widowed CEO? If so, where is his company? Could it be one of the companies I've dreamed of working for?" Agatha shook her head at her random guesses. "But it's unlikely. There are so many companies in this city."
Agatha nodded. "That's true. Lately, I haven't been updated about the companies I'm targeting because I've been busy with my thesis."
"I even forgot the name of the CEO there," she thought silently, followed by a small laugh.
Agatha was indeed forgetful. As expected, she sat up when she suddenly remembered something important. "Oh my goodness, I have to work on the task from Steven. The deadline is the day after tomorrow and I haven't even started."
Steven was a fellow student who had been hiring Agatha's freelance services to do his assignments for a long time.
Despite refusing several times because her workload was already full, Steven always gave her an advance payment, making it impossible for Agatha to refuse.
Agatha slapped her forgetful head before getting up to retrieve her laptop from her bag. "Damn, how could I forget?"
Agatha decided to work on Steven's assignment until she unknowingly fell asleep. She dozed off sitting up, resting her head against the headboard of the bed with her laptop in her lap.
The next morning, Agatha woke up to the sound of her alarm. She blinked, then widened her eyes when she saw Layla next to her, tidying up the bed.
"Layla? Are you already awake?"
