My Life is So Funny
Agatha gave a sharp look with furrowed brows in annoyance. "I don't give my number to just anyone."
She then furrowed her brows. "Moreover, why would a respected Campus Director ask for his student's phone number? You're not a lecturer, so we certainly have no important reason to exchange messages."
"There is. From now on, you are important to me." Cakra gave his charming smile which he believed would mesmerize Agatha.
Unfortunately, Agatha couldn't be amazed by any man's smile except Jayden Byanthara's. Instead, she rolled her eyes lazily, but Cakra interpreted it as a response of being bashful.
Although irritated, Agatha had no choice but to reluctantly avoid any conflict with Cakra just to leave his presence. She reluctantly held out her palm. "Fine, where's your phone? Let me type it myself."
Cakra looked at her, then smiled broadly. "I can't be fooled. You could give me a fake number, right?"
"I'm not like that," Agatha scoffed. She was wrong in trying to deceive him.
Unsatisfied, Cakra shook his head. Agatha's trick was easily deciphered. "No, you have to say it directly."
If not for Agatha's polite demeanor and the fact that Cakra wasn't just anyone, Agatha reluctantly conceded to avoid the possibility of being labeled as a difficult student.
With reluctance, Agatha took the phone, opened the contacts, and then showed the series of numbers in front of Cakra. "Satisfied now? So hand over my shopping items. I'm in a hurry in case you forgot."
Cakra nodded in agreement, and after storing Agatha's phone number, he put his phone back in his pocket.
Cakra then smiled contentedly, his initial mission went smoothly. Agatha was just like any other woman, easy for him to conquer.
"Even though I don't believe you're in a hurry for an important matter, I'll let you go this time. If we meet again, don't expect you can avoid me." Cakra handed over Agatha's purchases while gazing at her and smiling broadly.
Agatha accepted the items without intending to say anything. Because she had been restraining her patience and annoyance all this time, she immediately turned around and left. All she thought about now was Layla. She worried the girl might be upset for waiting too long.
"Beautiful back and good body shape. And that indifferent and attractive nature." Cakra kept watching Agatha walking hastily.
He then chuckled softly, "She really challenges me."
But unexpectedly, when Agatha turned into the apartment, Cakra suddenly clenched his fist. His gaze turned cold and sharp. "So she lives here?"
Meanwhile, Agatha, who had just taken off her sandals and headed toward the TV room, was stunned to find Layla resting her head on the table with the TV screen in front of her turned off.
"Oh, Aunt is back. I was about to fall asleep." Layla immediately sat up upon realizing Agatha standing there.
"Is the TV show boring?" Agatha asked as she sat beside Layla. She placed Layla's needed items on the table.
"Yes, there's nothing interesting. It's mostly news and soap operas." Layla opened the white plastic bag, and her eyes sparkled for a moment.
Agatha smiled softly. She felt guilty. "I'm sorry, I made you wait. There was a small issue downstairs. Are you still motivated to do your homework?"
"If you keep accompanying me, I can't be lazy."
Agatha chuckled briefly, pinching Layla's chubby cheek out of fondness. Layla grinned, her behavior like this, without Agatha realizing, meant a lot to Layla. The little girl was truly happy with Agatha's presence in her life.
After spending a few minutes on homework, it was now time for Layla to sleep. Agatha asked Layla to head to her room first, while she tidied up the messy table in front of the TV.
Once finished, she followed suit after turning off the bedroom light. Although she was still young, Agatha acknowledged Layla was brave to sleep with the light off – a stark contrast to how she used to fear the dark.
"Good night, Layla. Don't forget to say a prayer before sleeping, dear. Sweet dreams," Agatha pulled the blanket up to Layla's neck, then smiled gently as she stroked her head.
Layla startled, her cheeks blushing. She shyly smiled amid the dim light of the night lamp. "Good night, Aunt."
Agatha nodded briefly. As her college assignments were still piling up, she had to stay up late tonight. Not wanting to disturb Layla's sleep, Agatha fetched her laptop and books, then left the room to work in front of the TV.
Agatha suddenly remembered something as she raised her head to stare at the apartment ceiling. "I can't possibly use the card given by Jayden, can I?"
"No, that's really not a good idea," Agatha vigorously shook her head at her wild thought. However, she fell silent a few seconds later.
"But... is there really no other way?" Agatha mumbled, feeling a sudden dizziness washing over her.
"What should I do? Maybe I should go to the bank now? But I'm stupid. It's late, which bank is still open at this hour?" Agatha glanced at the wall clock, it was already eleven o'clock at night.
She then yelled out of frustration, messing up her shiny black hair until it looked disheveled. Her face appeared crestfallen, the task that was initially meant to reduce her workload had now been neglected.
"Damn. Damn. Damn."
Agatha cursed under her breath. She then chuckled softly, but her eyes welled up with tears. Her hands clenched into fists, her chest felt tight as if it could burst at any moment.
"This life of mine is so humorous. I can't help but laugh," Agatha muttered softly, followed by a bittersweet laugh, her head bowed down, allowing her tears to fall without concern for her current disheveled state.
Agatha fell silent, contemplating with a vacant gaze in the quiet of the night. Unnoticed by Agatha, someone entered and walked towards her.
"Agatha? You're not sleeping yet?"
Jayden, standing beside Agatha, looked puzzled as the girl didn't respond. He was perplexed by the glowing screen of her laptop, while Agatha seemed to be resting her head.
Jayden approached to check if the girl was sleeping while sitting.
"Agatha?" he called out louder, with doubt, Jayden touched Agatha's shoulder.
In an instant, Jayden's eyes widened in shock as Agatha looked up at him. Her appearance was disheveled, her hair untidy, her eyes weary, slightly swollen, and reddened.
Jayden wasn't naive; he knew the girl had been crying.
"Agatha? What's wrong? Agatha, hey?" Jayden knelt in front of Agatha, shifting his hands to her shoulders, looking at her with concern.
Agatha blinked in surprise, her eyes widened upon hearing his voice. "Jayden?"
"Are you okay? What happened?" Jayden stared deeply into Agatha's eyes, ensuring the state of the girl in front of him.
"Unusual for you to be back so soon. Not staying late?"
But Agatha quickly averted her gaze, removing Jayden's hand from her shoulder, then slightly shifted her body. She felt truly embarrassed to meet his gaze now.
Jayden sighed softly, studying Agatha, convinced she was hiding something from him. "I need to get some documents. How about you? Why aren't you asleep yet? And mulling over something alone at this hour?"
Agatha shook her head while fixing her hair, denying it, then turned to her laptop to put it back in her bag.
"I just finished working on an assignment. I'm not daydreaming, just taking a break," Agatha explained.
"No, you're lying. Tell me the truth, Agatha. Don't make me angry by lying to me," Jayden retorted, his tone turning colder.
Agatha suddenly felt nervous, her heart beating faster. As she tidied her books, she tried to calm herself. Agatha truly wanted to go to her room soon.
She didn't want Jayden to know about her problem because, honestly, she didn't want to inconvenience him again and again.
"I've been honest. Really," Agatha briefly turned around, forcing a small smile out of necessity.
Jayden clenched his fist. He didn't want to meddle, but his heart couldn't remain silent when he saw Agatha's eyes. Just like at the bar that night, Jayden's feelings urged him to ensure the girl was okay.
"You don't want to stay here anymore, huh? You want to make Layla sad, don't you?"
Agatha froze, her body stiffened, her heart felt like it stopped for a few seconds. Her initial intention to stand up was postponed as she turned her entire gaze towards Jayden. "What... do you mean?"
