Chapter 197: I Can't Agree with What You're Saying
Martina couldn't believe how shameless Adam was to utter these words in public. However, given his personality, she found it somewhat expected.
Adam was never a good person to begin with, so could anyone expect any good deeds from him? If he could actually carry them out, that would be surprising.
Martina rolled her eyes without reservation and once again held the chain of her handbag, as if she were about to leave in the next second, but she didn't actually depart.
"I think you're just joking. I can't agree with what you're saying. Since Amy has already committed an offense, she should face the consequences."
"These are the words I just said, and it's the attitude I've maintained. Adam, I believe you shouldn't be unaware of what Amy did to me, right?"
How could Adam not be aware? Even if he didn't understand before, he certainly did now.
It's true that it was his sister who dug her own grave, but she was still his sister. He couldn't just ignore it. At the very least, he should keep a closer eye on her in the future, avoid making these issues public, and be more cautious so as not to leave any handles for others to exploit. That way, such incidents wouldn't happen again, right?
However, Adam didn't anticipate that Martina would be so resolute. He had to admit that Martina did speak the truth, judging from her expression.
Adam's mind continued to rapidly churn, searching for a better opportunity. He had likely figured out the current game plan and was doing his best to adjust his attitude to avoid angering Martina.
"Is there really no other way? Or perhaps, whatever you want, as long as it's something you desire, I can fulfill it for you. You can't refuse so quickly, can you? I think many things can be negotiated."
"I know my sister was in the wrong, so I'm willing to meet your demands. I've already laid my cards on the table, so what more do you want?"
"Furthermore, you are not affected too much by this accident. In the future, my sister shouldn't have any contact with you. For you, it's a good thing!"
"Moreover, you might gain Benjamin's favor because of this. Isn't that what you'd like to see?"
"Previously, Benjamin didn't pay you much attention, even if he's changed his view of you now, it's not like you two are compatible."
"But if you want, you will be connected to our Paloma family, and in the future, we can assist you. I can also guarantee that my sister won't disturb the relationship between you and Benjamin anymore!"
At first, Adam's words might have seemed genuinely sincere, but in reality, they were not. However, Martina didn't care at all. She might be convinced before, but now, she wasn't.
It wasn't just about pride; the most important reason was that Martina had long understood the current state of affairs. She knew the gap between herself and Benjamin and understood that some things couldn't be rushed, no matter how eager she was.
Furthermore, when had Martina ever stated that she truly wanted to be with Benjamin? Even if they were to separate, it would be perfectly normal.
So, Adam's words were not persuasive to Martina. In fact, they would only earn him some mockery.
"Adam, it seems like your flattery might be aimed at the wrong person. I am not moved by your words," Martina said, coldly. "No matter how you try, it's a pity that you can't persuade me. So, don't blame me for refusing you."
Faced with Martina's blunt response, Adam's eyes seemed to be filled with fire of fury, however, he had no choice but to continue hiding the anger inside. It must have been quite painful for him.
"Why are you like this? I believe I've shown enough sincerity, and I'm willing to do my best to fulfill what you want. I can even make our family your ally. Why can't you see that? I'm just asking you for a small favor," Adam said, running out of patience.
Martina saw through Adam's true intentions with just one glance. If she had actually believed him, she would have to question her sanity.
"For you, it might be a small matter, but it's not the same for me," Martina retorted. "Amy dared to act this way because she relied on her status and connections. I think there should be consequences for her actions."
"Look, I know what you are thinking. Even if you're pretending so convincingly now, I know you don't really feel that way, do you?"
"If I were to agree to what you're saying, and if Amy were to get out of the police station, what would be the consequences for me?"
Momentarily stunned, Adam furrowed his brows tightly, and a look of confusion could be seen in his eyes.
"What do you mean by that? Haven't I been quite clear?"
"You only said it clearly, but it doesn't mean you can actually do it. I'm not a fool," Martina smirked. "Let me guess, if I were to follow your suggestions, how would you react? You'd definitely launch a fierce attack on me the moment your sister is safe."
Adam widened his eyes involuntarily probably because he didn't expect Martina to accurately guess his inner thoughts. Had he exposed himself so blatantly?
He subconsciously shook his head, and the smile on his face appeared even more strained.
It felt like Martina had transformed into an entirely different person, and her uncanny change was more than a little overwhelming for Adam.
"How could that be? These are just your one-sided thoughts. I've never said anything like that. Don't misunderstand me," Adam faked a smile and explained.
"Sure," Martina nodded slightly, "you've never said it, but that's what you really think. I don't want to take that risk, and I don't want any connection with your family."
Before Adam could retort, Martina had already expressed her most accurate and genuine thoughts.
After all, offending people was something Martina had done more than once. It's like the saying – practice makes perfect, and she was quite experienced by now.
