Chapter 227: Just Keep It
Elizabeth, who had been ignored until the end, didn't recognize her own mistakes. Instead, she wanted to quickly complete the tasks she had in mind. Only this way could she feel more content. So, after the meal, she hurried back to her room, fearing that any delay might affect the time she had left. She truly had no ability for self-reflection, or perhaps in her view, everything she did was always right.
...
Martina returned to her bedroom, took out her laptop from the table, adjusted herself into a comfortable position, half-lying on the bed, and continued to work. She also sent a message to Elena.
"Something just happened, and I'm not sure if I should tell you."
When Elena received Martina's message, she had just finished her meal and was back in her own room. She responded almost instantly.
"What happened? Just tell me. Don't keep it to yourself. Whether it's good or bad, I'm here with you."
If anyone else said these words, it might sound insincere, but when Elena said them, it was different. At the very least, she truely cared for Martina.
Martina chuckled, "Actually, it's not that complicated. Jack gave me something, and according to what Elizabeth said, it's a family heirloom of the Walker family."
Elena had been busy all day and was feeling a bit tired. However, upon reading Martina's message, she felt a surge of excitement, and sleep was out of the question.
"I can't believe it! Really? He actually gave you the family heirloom! It's so unbelievable! I've heard about this family heirloom from others before; I heard that the Walker family has always had one. It's for the future mistress of the family, symbolizing her status! But you and Benjamin haven't even gotten married yet. Why would Jack do this? What's the benefit in doing so?"
No matter how Elena thought about it, she couldn't understand. She even found it somewhat baffling and couldn't make sense of Jack's intentions.
In reality, Martina could make some educated guesses. It was because Jack had been genuinely kind to her, treating her willingly without any ulterior motives, both in the past and now. That's why she couldn't flatly refuse him in front of him.
Empathizing with him, Martina realized that if she were too resolute in her actions, how would she face Jack in the future?
After hearing what Elena said, she took a moment to think deeply and said, "I find it strange too, but I can make some educated guesses as well. In any case, this situation can't be purely coincidental. I just don't understand why Jack would choose this moment to give me the family heirloom. Has he perhaps noticed something? Has he realized that I truly want to leave?"
Upon reflection, it wasn't entirely implausible. Considering Jack's intelligence, if he genuinely aimed to uncover something, it would be quite effortless.
Elena had a sudden realization, and Martina's words prompted her to immediately dial and have a direct conversation with Martina.
"Indeed, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility. Perhaps Jack has realized your true desire to part ways with Benjamin. He might be concerned that he won't find another future granddaughter-in-law as outstanding as you, so he's determined to secure your commitment swiftly. This is typical of Jack; his thinking is on a different level than others. It's truly mind-boggling!"
Martina pursed her lips. Now even Elena was saying this. It left her at a loss for words.
Perhaps Jack really had this thought, and that's why he acted this way. However, Martina felt guilty for thinking like this, given Jack's kindness toward her. Her thoughts were in turmoil, and she didn't know how to express herself.
She sighed deeply, "Who knows, maybe I'm just overthinking it."
Sensing Martina's subdued tone, Elena decided not to press the matter further. Instead, she offered comfort, "Well, forget it, forget it. Don't dwell on it. Since Jack has already given you the bracelet, just keep it. The rest doesn't matter. For now, in everyone's eyes, you're the woman by Benjamin's side, and you're the only one. No one dares to mess with you easily! Just relax and take things as they come. Who can guarantee what will happen next? We'll cross that bridge when we get there."
The current situation was becoming increasingly complex, and even Martina couldn't see through it clearly. Reluctantly, she continued to agree and decided to follow Elena's advice.
"Yeah, I hope I'm just overthinking it. In any case, if one day I truly decide to leave, I'll leave this family heirloom here. It doesn't belong to me."
Martina intentionally emphasized this point, perhaps to sound a warning bell to herself or to remind herself not to do anything foolish. Hence, she said it this way.
Maybe when she received this family heirloom before, she would have been very happy, feeling like she had finally gained recognition from Benjamin's family, including Benjamin himself. But now, she couldn't feel any happiness; instead, she felt an unprecedented pressure.
Elena laughed, but deep down, she wasn't really happy. When she thought about the hardships her best friend had endured in Benjamin's family, it was hard for her to be joyful.
Even if Benjamin's family seemed eager to make amends now, could they really make up for the pain and suffering that Martina had endured in the past?
If it were that simple, she might as well commit a random crime, then casually apologize and offer some money to make amends. It was similar to the situation with Amy. Looking at it from a different perspective, it was easy to understand. If many things could truly be easily rectified, Amy wouldn't still be in prison, right?
So, many things were uncertain, and they couldn't be generalized.
Martina couldn't make others understand her true thoughts, but at the very least, she shouldn't let others affect her and change her inner self.
