Chapter 239: Have You Noticed Something's Off?
Maybe it really could have led to a successful relationship, even though it might not have been the most traditional path. In matters of the heart, who cared about tradition? As long as the ultimate goal was achieved, the process hardly mattered, and her brother should have been very willing...
Of course, the prerequisite was that Martina and Benjamin had a clean break. Otherwise, it was very risky. If Benjamin were to find out that someone was trying to make a move on his territory, he would have gone crazy. Just looking at how he behaved back in school could have told you everything.
At that exact moment, whether by coincidence or not, Benjamin suddenly emerged and casually positioned himself behind Martina. To an observer unaware of their true relationship, the way they naturally stood together might have suggested a familial connection, leaving many puzzled about their actual relationship and status.
At that moment, Benjamin greeted Alejandro as if it were a casual meeting. "Hi. We meet again."
According to Benjamin's personality, as mentioned before, he would never initiate a greeting unless there's a specific reason. It would be highly abnormal. Yet, here he was, greeting Alejandro. The two of them had crossed paths several times before, and they were already used to it.
However, Benjamin's expression at that moment was far from calm, and a sense of suppressed anger could be observed. If he weren't worried about startling Martina, who knows what unbelievable actions he might take.
All of this was because of Martina. However, as the person involved, she seemed oblivious to anything being amiss! Perhaps she was just in a good mood upon seeing acquaintances and didn't notice anything was odd.
She suggested, "Elena, you can just follow me later. As for your brother, after all, he's a man, and it might not be convenient for him to stay with us the whole time. So, why don't we --"
Before Martina could finish her sentence, Benjamin quickly cut in, "Just leave him to me, and I'll take care of him."
Martina gave Benjamin a bewildered look. Would he really take care of him? She distinctly remembered that these two didn't seem to get along well. Benjamin had even subtly discouraged her from contacting Alejandro. So why was he being so considerate today? Could such coincidences truly happen in the world?
Perhaps it was because Martina's thoughts were too obvious. Benjamin didn't even need to think; he knew exactly what was going on in her mind. However, the more she thought this way, the more Benjamin needed to appear composed, generous, and unfazed by her thoughts. It was a matter of maintaining his dignity. Any failure in such a trivial matter in his own home would be embarrassing.
Alejandro also didn't want to put Martina in an awkward position, so despite knowing that he and Benjamin wouldn't get along too well, he didn't refuse this arrangement and said, "That's fine. I'll be with him. Today is a special day for Mr. Jack Walker. I hope he'll be happy every day from now on."
Benjamin's face remained devoid of any signs of a smile. His inner thoughts were teetering on the edge of being revealed, nearly on the brink of exposure.
Martina observed their current interaction, which seemed acceptable. She gradually eased her concerns and said to Benjamin, "Alright, then, I'll leave Alejandro to you. Please make sure to take good care of him. Today is Jack's birthday, and it's the most important thing in the world. Please don't cause any trouble. If you upset Jack, you'll be the one dealing with the consequences!"
It's unclear whether Benjamin really took those words to heart. He just calmly urged, "You should take her and leave first. Leave Alejandro to me."
Elena did notice a few oddities. However, she realized that given her current identity and appearance, there was little she could change. At most, it would only invite trouble. So, she didn't say a word. Instead, she immediately took Martina and left the place as if she feared that any delay could lead to complications. Her behavior was quite astonishing.
It was only after the two of them had left the sight of many people that they finally stopped. Elena felt relieved but couldn't help looking back. She observed her brother standing beside Benjamin. Fortunately, they didn't seem to have crossed any lines, but she still felt uneasy.
She couldn't help but wonder if Benjamin had picked up on her brother's feelings for Martina. If he had, it would be unfair, and the situation could easily be misunderstood. Her heart was pounding as she glanced at Martina a few more times.
"Martina, did you notice that the atmosphere between Benjamin and my brother seemed a bit strange? They acted like they were sworn enemies. Do you think something might be going on?" Elena tried to express her thoughts subtly, hoping that Martina would understand. However, Martina was unfamiliar with this situation and hadn't thought much about it. As a result, she just continued on her own path without grasping the meaning behind Elena's words.
"They should be fine, I guess," Martina said. "Even though Benjamin can be a bit tricky in terms of his personality, he won't cause any problems on such an occasion, especially since it's Jack's birthday. If he doesn't want to upset Jack and make him unhappy, he'll know how to control his temper. It won't benefit him otherwise. Jack might seem kind most of the time, but when he's angry, he can be quite frightening. Even Benjamin wouldn't want to defy him."
After hearing Martina's detailed explanation, Elena's heart was still a bit uneasy, but she had gained a clearer understanding of the situation and believed that there wouldn't be any problems. As Martina emphasized, if Benjamin had no intention of causing any disruptions at this particular moment, the likelihood of any issues arising would be significantly reduced.
