Chapter 198: Grandfather, I Failed
Anyway, here's my bottom line: Amy must pay for her actions. I don't care if you hold a grudge against me or not; the situation won't change. You'd better give up," Martina continued after a shock break. "If you really want to use money to buy people, you might as well try to make your sister's life in prison a little easier. I heard there are all sorts of bad people in there."
Having said this, Martina checked the time; it had been about 10 minutes. She had no intention of staying any longer and planned to leave.
She had thought Adam might come up with something more convincing, but it turned out he had a silver tongue and no real abilities.
Seeing Martina about to leave, Adam panicked and couldn't care about anything else. He grabbed her arm with a significant amount of hostility, as if he wanted to crush it. After all, there was a significant difference in strength between a man and a woman.
Martina struggled to break free but failed. She glared at Adam in annoyance, saying, "Is this your idea of sincerity? Are you going to resort to violence if I don't agree?"
Adam's face showed a hint of embarrassment, and he knew that what he was doing was inappropriate. It was easy to anger Martina, but he thought he had no other choice.
He had no choice but to resort to a desperate measure. After all, he couldn't just let Martina walk away, as it would be extremely difficult to see her again in the future.
The situation with his sister was becoming increasingly dangerous with every passing moment. If he couldn't convince Martina now, he was in serious trouble. Once Amy's verdict was delivered, there would be no way to change it, no matter how much money they had. He had insisted that everything be done by the book; otherwise, who would stand by the side of the Paloma family in the future?
Adam took a deep breath and said, "I've made myself very clear. Today, whether you agree or not, you have to agree."
Martina endured the pain in her wrist and kept her gaze fixed on Adam. "Are you trying to force me into this?"
Adam quickly shook his head. It seemed he didn't want to escalate the situation further, as it would be impossible to persuade Martina.
"I didn't mean that. How about this? I'll give you a $10 million check as a sign of my sincerity," Adam suggested, sounding anxious. "If you can assist Amy, I'm willing to offer you more money, maybe even $20 million or more. Consider this: with your current abilities, it would be nearly impossible for you to earn such a sum in your lifetime. What I'm offering is already more than generous. You have every reason to accept."
Adam's words did make some sense. However, Martina had never stated that she needed to earn a lot of money in her lifetime. As long as she could secure her basic needs and live life on her own terms, that was enough for her. The amount of money she earned wasn't a top priority for her. She didn't have exceptionally high financial ambitions. With so many people in the world, why should she expect to make a fortune? As long as she had enough for her expenses, it was sufficient.
Unfortunately, Adam couldn't comprehend Martina's mindset, and he couldn't grasp her ultimate reaction.
He even tried to put himself in Martina's shoes and considered that if this situation were happening to him, he'd be extremely tempted and wouldn't refuse. Could Martina really reject his offer?
Just when Adam thought he had succeeded, Martina tore the check he had handed over into pieces without a second thought.
"I advise you not to entertain these unrealistic ideas, to prevent yourself from getting worked up," Martina said firmly. "Adam, if you don't want me to intentionally speak ill of you in front of the police, you'd better let go of me right now."
While Martina definitely wouldn't actually follow through with her threat, sometimes saying a few words could effectively make certain people feel fearful. For example, Adam, after hearing her statement, quickly withdrew his hands as if he'd been shocked, not daring to touch her again.
Adam knew that there were no good outcomes for those who offended Martina. Even when he got angry and uttered irrelevant things from time to time, he never dared to say such things in front of her or truly offend her. Otherwise, the consequences would be dire, even more severe than having his sister thrown into prison.
Taking advantage of the moment, Martina slung her bag over her shoulder, and without looking back, she left. As she walked away, she muttered a few words, "I thought you were exceptional, but it seems your abilities are quite limited. You must be out of your mind."
Adam fell into silence and watched Martina briskly depart. He considered going after her. However, he realized that even if he caught up, it would be pointless. This woman couldn't be swayed by any means.
Adam found himself lost in thought. If this matter went awry, the consequences would undoubtedly be very severe. As he thought about this, he felt particularly uneasy. Nevertheless, he had no choice but to report the situation honestly to his grandfather.
"Grandfather, I did try my best. But Martinez is so cunning. It's as if she already knew the purpose of my visit. Now she's being particularly arrogant and refusing to even talk to me. She rejected all the conditions and benefits I offered," Adam complained.
"It's only a small task! She's just a country girl, what's so hard about it?" Gary restrained his anger and blamed. "Stupid boy, I don't care about the method. If polite persuasion fails, resort to force if needed. Even if you have to kidnap her, get her to the police station to clear your sister's name!"
It was clear that Gary was genuinely angry, as he spoke without restraint, making Adam feel sorry for himself.
Adam was already in a difficult situation, being caught between a rock and a hard place. He would rather have been beaten up by Benjamin if it meant securing his sister's release. Playing these mind games with Martina seemed much more challenging and less certain.
