Chapter 205: Hiding Something?
In case Martina was doing something behind the scenes, what should be done? They had to take precautions in advance for the safety of Elizabeth.
Gradually, Elizabeth also calmed down. She knew the butler was speaking the truth. Even if she felt displeased, she had no other choice.
"Fine, you go investigate it later and find out what's going on. I also think this woman must be up to something. We need to take preventive measures in advance," Elizabeth said. Afterward, she couldn't help but clutch her chest dramatically, looking quite uncomfortable. However, it was understandable given the circumstances.
It seemed that no one could remain indifferent in such situations, no matter who it happened to. Martina might be a younger generation, but she was acting more arrogantly than the older one. It would naturally make anyone feel unhappy.
Martina returned to her room and threw herself onto the large bed. Finally, she had a bit of leisure, and she didn't need to ponder over all those miscellaneous things. She only needed to wait for tomorrow to go and welcome Jack when he arrived.
However, not much time had passed before the butler arrived with a tray, taking the initiative to visit Martina.
According to the rules, the butler should have knocked on the door outside and waited for someone inside to let him in. However, this time, he seemed to disregard the rules and pushed the door open while knocking.
Martina furrowed her brows, but considering the butler's age and position, she didn't go too far with her words.
"Butler, do you have something to discuss? You just barged in like this. What if I were changing clothes in here? Do you think that's impolite?" Although Martina didn't directly confront him, her words were rather straightforward.
The butler immediately felt embarrassed, recognizing his mistake. He was lucky that this wasn't the most embarrassing moment. Martina was right; if she had been taking a shower, and the butler walked in at that moment, it would have been an invasion of privacy.
If such an incident had occurred and reached Benjamin's ears, the consequences would have been severe. Benjamin wouldn't forgive the butler, and the butler might have lost his job.
The butler quickly retreated, apologizing profusely without daring to utter a word of objection. He maintained his composure, not because he had a deep understanding of rule, but rather because he didn't want to lower his head completely. This was one of this butler's unique skills – he would go to great lengths to avoid being looked down on.
"Miss Martinez, I'm truly sorry for my abrupt intrusion. It's just that the madam specifically instructed me to prepare a bowl of silver ear mushroom congee for you and asked you to give it a try. That's why I hurriedly entered. But I won't do it again next time," the butler explained.
Martina didn't dwell on the previous topic and simply rolled her eyes. She lay on her bed with her hands supporting her chin. In front of her lay an unfamiliar book that appeared to be a novel, but it was positioned at a distance, making it challenging to read.
The butler discreetly glanced at Martina, and when he saw that she wasn't genuinely angry, he felt somewhat relieved, saying, "Miss Martinez, should I place the congee on the table? You can have it later if you get hungry."
Martina didn't refuse. She was well aware that people like Elizabeth were often up to something when they showed such kindness. They had ulterior motives.
Having the butler bring her the bowl of congee was a clear sign of their intentions. But Martina chose to play dumb. If Jack truly hadn't informed Elizabeth about his return in advance, it might be intentional, and Martina couldn't go against Jack's wishes.
"Sure, just leave it there. I'll eat it later if I get hungry," Martina casually replied and continued to browse the magazine in her hands as if it were highly entertaining, completely disregarding whether the butler had left the room or not.
The butler struggled to maintain his facial expression throughout the conversation. If it weren't for his position, he might retort right away.
"Miss Martinez, I came here to inquire if there are any upcoming events or arrangements that I should be aware of. If you know something, please inform me in advance. This way, we can make necessary preparations. Is there a guest coming over, or is there something planned by the young master?" he asked.
Although the butler maintained a polite demeanor, deep down, he still looked down on Martina, believing that she was abusing her authority.
Martina, seeing through but not willing to reveal the truth, played innocent. "I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't understand a word."
The butler raised his eyebrows and asked, "Haven't you noticed that you seem unusually cheerful today? Is something good happening? The madam cares about you. Why not share, and maybe she can assist in some way?"
Surprisingly, the butler made an emotional appeal to persuade Martina, but it proved ineffective as the emotion he referred to was entirely unrealistic.
"I don't have anything to say, and I can't understand what you're talking about. Instead of wasting time here with your questions and comments, it's better to make other arrangements in advance. That way, we can prevent potential issues and avoid regrets," Martina responded.
Upon hearing Martina's blunt refusal, the butler couldn't conceal his changing facial expressions. His face indicated that he was unhappy with the situation.
"Miss Martinez has quite the attitude. If you don't want to share, that's fine. I won't push," he said.
The butler left the room promptly, clearly annoyed. It seemed that Martina had her own unique way of handling such situations.
As Martina watched the butler's retreating figure, she picked up the congee and took a sip. She found it overly sweet for her taste. While inexpensive silver ear mushroom congee is delicious, it can be burdensome when overly sweet.
Martina propped her chin up in thought. She contemplated the upcoming situation: if she and Benjamin were to greet Jack tomorrow without informing Elizabeth, it would certainly be quite exciting.
Elizabeth's reaction would be a sight to behold, and perhaps even more dramatic than a color palette. To be honest, Martina was becoming quite eager for it.
Unfortunately, some people were stubborn and wouldn't change unless they saw the consequences firsthand.
