Chapter 243: Unconscious
Time passed slowly, and after about three hours, the lights in the operating room, which had been on continuously, finally dimmed. Along with the doctors and nurses leaving, Martina and Jack walked over to inquire, supporting each other.
"Doctor, how is the person inside? Is he okay?" they asked.
Although the doctor was reluctant, he could only shake his head. "I'm sorry, we did our best, but the patient can't wake up for now. If he can't regain consciousness within a month, his body may remain in a state of being awake but immobile."
In other words, he was practically in a vegetative state, though they expressed it more gently.
This news hit Martina like a thunderbolt. She couldn't accept it, no matter how hard she tried. It was all so sudden, and Benjamin had been in excellent physical condition. How could this happen?
But whether Martina accepted it or not, it was the harsh reality. As she watched Benjamin being wheeled out of the operating room on a hospital bed, her heart shattered.
All she could think of now was that if Benjamin could recover his health, nothing else mattered. She was willing to do anything, even if it meant reuniting with him. It didn't matter how they would interact or what kind of relationship they would have; as long as he was safe, nothing else mattered.
However, at this moment, it seemed that Martina's realization had come a bit too late. It felt as though the world was ending.
Martina was already lost in her thoughts, and Elizabeth sat on the ground, utterly devastated.
Fortunately, Benjamin's life was spared, and everyone could only pray that he would recover peacefully, without turning into a conscious vegetable.
The doctor advised Martina that if she wanted to speed up Benjamin's awakening, she could spend more time by his side, talking to him about things he might be interested in. This might help him wake up sooner, and even if it didn't, it could provide some comfort.
Once Jack ensured that Benjamin was out of immediate danger, he breathed a sigh of relief. Of course, he cared deeply about whether Benjamin would wake up, but caring could only go so far. It was for this reason that Jack decided to make the responsible parties pay. Particularly the woman who had brought Benjamin to this condition would not escape his wrath. He would ensure she faced the consequences she deserved.
As for Elizabeth, her momentary lapse in judgment had led to these consequences, and she would also pay a heavy price.
Jack was straightforward, stating, "From now on, you have no relation to our family. Your life and death are no longer our concern."
Elizabeth realized her mistake but knew there was no turning back. She had to follow Jack's wishes because there was no other option.
Currently, Martina remained by Benjamin's side, hoping to wake him as soon as possible.
During this time, Jack had been closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that the woman responsible paid for her actions, and indeed, she did.
The woman was sentenced to prison for intentionally injuring someone. However, at first, Jack didn't understand the motive behind her actions. It was only after thorough investigations that he learned that the woman had underlying mental issues.
Because she looked so much like Martina, Elizabeth had found her and persuaded her to impersonate Benjamin. As a result, she developed an interest in continuing the charade, given her mental health problems. This, combined with her mental issues, led her into a world of her own, and it spiraled out of control from there.
It was a twist of fate that led to the unfortunate incident where Benjamin got hurt when, in fact, he shouldn't have been in danger. He had taken the risk to protect Martina due to his sense of responsibility and concern for her.
This incident shocked many people, and it caused significant turmoil in the company during this period. Business partners were particularly worried about the potential consequences if something happened to Benjamin.
In a last-ditch effort, Jack stepped in once more to try and stabilize the situation. Thankfully, despite his age, he still possessed the skills and experience needed to maintain the company's current state. However, it was uncertain how long he could continue this if Benjamin remained incapacitated for an extended period.
Currently, both Martina and Jack hoped for Benjamin's swift recovery. They weren't concerned about anything else; they just wanted him to wake up.
Martina was practically on the go every day now, staying by Benjamin's side, and cooking different dishes daily. On an ordinary day, her culinary skills might have appeared unimpressive, but they improved significantly during that time.
However, Benjamin still showed no signs of waking up, and the meals she prepared every day remained untouched.
Today, Martina had made some congee, hoping that Benjamin would wake up, but even such a simple wish had become a luxury.
Looking at Benjamin on the bed, with his face having become somewhat haggard and extremely pale, her emotions were genuinely beyond description. She spoke to him with a gentle and sorrowful voice.
"Benjamin, are you still blaming me? Why won't you wake up?"
"Would you please wake up? In your absence, everything at home has become a mess. If you wake up, I'll promise you anything you want."
"If you wake up, I'll be with you. Nothing is more important to me than your well-being. I just want to see you safe and sound, and nothing else matters."
"Please wake up quickly..."
As for the details of Benjamin's injury, even though it had been strictly kept under wraps by Jack, people who had witnessed it at the banquet had already leaked some information, including Martina's father, Miguel, who was now aware of the situation.
Upon receiving this news, Miguel was also deeply saddened.
