Chapter 215: What kind of Issue Could You Possibly Have
Elizabeth didn't know what kind of feelings she carried as she appeared in the living room. She saw the harmonious interaction between the three of them, feeling somewhat like an outsider. To avoid incurring more of Jack's anger, she was ready to give up even her dignity.
She had the maid prepare a cup of tea and personally delivered it to Jack, saying, "Jack, would you like some tea? I'm truly sorry. I was wrong before, and I promise I won't do it again."
Elizabeth's most significant characteristic was her adaptability. Sometimes, when she knew she couldn't handle a situation, she would apologize first and plan her revenge later. However, when it came to dealing with Jack, this characteristic was probably useless. Would she dare to seek revenge?
Perhaps considering Benjamin's feelings, Jack reluctantly accepted the tea and took a sip, saying, "Well, as long as you understand your mistake. I've said it before – Martina is your only future daughter-in-law. Even if they haven't married and registered it officially, that's something that won't change. As Martina's future mother-in-law, how can you treat her this way? Do you want to be the wicked mother-in-law?"
Elizabeth felt ashamed and struggled to speak. After a while, she managed to say, "Yes, I was wrong before. Martina, I promise I won't treat you like this in the future. Can we let bygones be bygones?"
Martina didn't actually believe Elizabeth's promises. She suspected that it might even get worse in the future. However, she hadn't considered staying here for the rest of her life. Maybe one day she would have to leave.
To avoid making Jack sad, Martina reluctantly extended her hand and patted Elizabeth's shoulder. "The past is in the past. I don't hold grudges."
Elizabeth's face lit up upon hearing this. "Exactly! I knew you were a very kind and generous girl. You wouldn't hold it against me. That's great."
Elizabeth deliberately put on a facade of being a good person, and the contrast with her previous behavior was quite significant. Even a fool could see that she was putting on an act to some extent. People couldn't change that easily.
Jack hesitated for a couple of seconds and then finally said, "As long as you know how to correct your behavior, that's enough. Let's leave it at that."
...
Soon, Elizabeth returned to her bedroom, relieved that she didn't have to worry anymore. She took out her phone and started chatting with her friends.
They had originally arranged to play mahjong in the afternoon, but it seemed that it wouldn't be possible now. She couldn't go out at this time, or it would surely displease Jack.
Elizabeth was aware that her good times were probably coming to an end. Once Jack returned, she would have to suppress her temper and refrain from doing many things. She posted in the group chat, "Can't play mahjong today, something happened here."
This comment immediately drew the disapproval and curiosity of the other ladies.
"Elizabeth, what happened? What kind of issue could you possibly have? Your company can't have gone bankrupt, right?"
As soon as that comment was made, it was quickly retracted, presumably out of concern that if someone with malicious intent took a screenshot, it would have a negative impact. Later, she deleted the last sentence, reposted the message. Fortunately for Elizabeth, her scattered thoughts prevented her from seeing the final remark; otherwise, she would have surely been upset.
She replied, "It's a minor matter. Why are you concerned?"
However, these people were not giving up. "Don't blame us for being curious. We're genuinely concerned. What kind of issue could you possibly have?"
"Any issues at home should be handled by your son, right? It really has nothing to do with you. What kind of problem would require you to handle?"
Perhaps out of impatience or due to a bad mood, Elizabeth swiftly added another sentence, "My father-in-law has returned home, and there might be a dinner tonight. We have several arrangements for the afternoon, so I can't go out. We'll have to reschedule our mahjong game."
Upon seeing this message, the members of the group chat were taken aback. They all knew who Elizabeth referred to as "father-in-law." They had previously heard that Jack's health was not great, and he was supposed to be resting away from home. They never expected him to return so soon.
If anything happened to Jack, it would have significant implications for the entire Walker family, possibly even affecting the Walker group. This was one of the reasons for their deep concern.
Now that Jack had returned, some people might think that their "safeguard" had returned, leading to a variety of thoughts and speculations.
"Oh, I see. It seems you have been quite busy lately. Let's arrange our own mahjong game," one of them commented.
The group fell silent after that, but Elizabeth couldn't silence her racing thoughts. What were these people saying? Were they really looking down on her like this? Even though they were stating facts, the truth could be quite hard to swallow. She was accustomed to being pampered and admired, so when had she ever been treated this way before?
The more Elizabeth thought about it, the angrier she became. She was mindful not to make loud noises, as Jack was already at home, and it wouldn't be appropriate to create a ruckus.
She held the expensive vase in her hand, but she couldn't continue smashing it as she had done before. Her heart felt uncomfortable, and it was all because of Martina. It seemed like Martina was her unlucky star. Whenever Martina was around, things never ended well for her.
Furthermore, Elizabeth's every action was under the scrutiny of others. It appeared as if Martina had foreseen everything, purposefully causing Jack and Benjamin to misconstrue Elizabeth's intentions.
This possibility did cross her mind. It couldn't be denied that some people tended to think negatively. Martina had never harbored such intentions, but Elizabeth couldn't help but consider it.
Perhaps this was the difference between Martina and Elizabeth. Their personalities were inherently distinct. Martina was more understanding and considerate, never willingly causing harm to others, and never seeking revenge unless someone had provoked her excessively. On the other hand, Elizabeth was quite the opposite.
