Chapter 217: Benjamin Wasn't Her Top Priority
After Martina and the others had finished breakfast, nobody came to call Elizabeth to join them. She was puzzled. Wasn't her displeasure clear enough? She was already angry, so why wasn't anyone willing to inform her about the breakfast?
She began to wonder why, and it seemed like Martina might be deliberately playing tricks on her. The mere thought of this possibility made Elizabeth even more dissatisfied with Martina, intensifying her resentment.
After contemplating it, Elizabeth couldn't help but text the number she had previously contacted. She wrote, "Hurry up and find what I need. Even if you can't find the girl, create one for me. As long as you can meet my demands, everything between us will be forgotten."
The man on the phone didn't respond with much, only sending an "OK" emoji before falling silent. By this time, Elizabeth's stomach was growling loudly from hunger, but she felt too embarrassed to go out and eat.
Just as she was contemplating going out to grab a bite, she heard the butler's voice from outside. "Mr. Jack Walker, Mrs. Elizabeth Walker hasn't eaten anything since last night. Maybe it's best to have her come out and eat something?"
Jack had been growing somewhat dissatisfied with the butler lately. He had been the staff for many years, but it seemed like he was only considering Elizabeth's interests. Wasn't he responsible for others' welfare as well? He should have been in charge of everyone's well-being, including their food, lodging, and daily routines. However, it seemed like he was showing some favoritism.
Jack, considering the butler had spent half his life in the household, didn't say anything too harsh but didn't mince words either.
He retorted, "Are you implying that I'm preventing her from eating? She claimed she wasn't feeling well and didn't want to eat on her own accord. Why are you discussing this in front of me? You shouldn't play favorites. Don't forget why you are staying here."
Jack made his stance clear: deal with what needs to be managed, and don't get involved where it's not necessary. Since Elizabeth herself decided not to eat, it was not anyone else's concern. He couldn't take responsibility for everything.
Jack was becoming increasingly curious. What kind of life had Martina led while he wasn't at home? The butler, upon hearing this, couldn't help but shudder. His calm demeanor went through a significant change. It seemed like he had crossed a line, maybe due to excessive concern.
"Sorry. I was out of line, and I won't do this again in the future."
Jack took a few more bites, and as Martina and Benjamin had left separately, he had lost his appetite. He waved his hand dismissively in the butler's direction, saying, "Forget it. Just don't do anything similar in the future. That's all."
Then Jack got up and returned to his room. The butler was left standing there for a while. Finally, he just glanced towards Elizabeth's room and redirected his gaze.
Perhaps he had indeed gone too far. Provoking Jack could result in his departure, despite his age.
Back in his bedroom, Jack immediately had further instructions for Nathan. "Look into what has been happening at home recently. Investigate any useful information from the past few weeks."
Nathan, ever the dedicated assistant, nodded without hesitation. He already had some suspicions, and now he was making arrangements without any discomfort. "Understood. Should I focus on the matters between Mr. Benjamin Walker and Mrs. Martina Walker?"
Jack responded with an affirming "Yes."
Then, with some embarrassment, Nathan ran his fingers through his hair. He knew that his previous comment had irked Jack. Suddenly, he regretted speaking out of turn. It was needlessly poking at things. After that, he quickly left the room to conduct his investigation.
Nathan was undeniably fast in his work. By the afternoon, he had compiled a detailed account of recent events. Some even had photographic evidence, like Martina leaving home a while back, remaining absent for a month, and being located with great difficulty by Benjamin. Moreover, after Martina's return, she had stopped restraining her temper as she did before and began confronting Elizabeth on each occasion. Finally, Benjamin had undergone significant changes since Martina's one-month absence.
It was the sort of relationship where there seemed to be a stark contrast between the two, as if they had suddenly switched roles.
To be honest, even without Nathan's comment, Jack could feel it himself because it was glaringly obvious. He had been unaware of the reasons behind it before, but now, having heard the true reasons, his expression reflected shock and puzzlement.
Frankly, he considered himself skilled at reading people, especially when it came to matters of the heart, given his experience. According to Martina's character, she would never stay away for a whole month, unless she had decided to give up on Benjamin. And this time, Benjamin's significant transformation was likely due to this realization. No wonder the person who used to be so close had become someone else.
Jack pursed his lips, and his face showed a hint of displeasure.
"What a fool! Besides being busy with work every day, why doesn't he know how to be productive in other aspects? At his age, after establishing his career, shouldn't he hurry up and establish a family? If his future wife is really snatched away by someone else, let's see how he deals with it. He might not even have time to regret!" Jack exclaimed.
Nathan agreed. Sometimes, he found Benjamin to be too single-minded and clueless about how to make her happy. Without those who secretly helped, pursuing Martina would be a real challenge. She was capable of anything. It was no wonder she didn't wait at home for him every day. Clearly, she didn't consider him her top priority.
Realizing these things, Nathan couldn't resist asking, "Sir, do we need to do something to help?"
