Chapter 209: What Kind of Wife Are You Looking For?
In the current moment, Jack instinctively believed that the reason Martina had spoken this way was because Benjamin wasn't willing! He shot a glaring look at Benjamin, his eyes burning with disapproval.
"You, young man, you're something else. You have such a good girlfriend right in front of you, and you're not willing to marry her? What kind of wife are you looking for?" Jack issued his ultimatum, "Let me make this clear: besides the lady here, nobody else is getting through our door. If you try, I'll kick you out as well!"
Simon and Nathan silently covered their ears, pretending not to hear; it was not the kind of thing they could hear.
Benjamin, feeling wronged and bitter, glanced at Jack, attempting to explain himself, "Grandfather, I haven't... I haven't been thinking about refusing or not getting married."
Martina instinctively clenched her fists, worried that if Benjamin continued, she might inadvertently make her feelings more obvious.
Fortunately, Benjamin's earlier words weren't too loud, and Jack, angered but hard of hearing, didn't catch everything.
"I don't care what you're thinking. She is the right one for you. You're not getting any younger, and you can't keep dragging your feet like this," Jack huffed and said. "If you don't marry and have kids soon, your future children will practically be born at the starting line. Do you want your children to be one year old when you're seventy or eighty?"
The thought of this possibility made Benjamin feel uneasy. He realized it seemed plausible, considering his current age. Even if he had children now, it wouldn't seem inappropriate. But if he waited until he was old to have his own children, it would be better not to have them at all. That would be too cruel.
Whether to appease Jack or because he genuinely had such thoughts, Benjamin unexpectedly looked in Martina's direction. His voice softened as he said, "Grandfather, I understand now. I'll think about it, and we'll get married as soon as possible."
Hearing this somewhat satisfactory response, Jack finally nodded reluctantly. "Good, that's what I want to hear. If you don't listen to me, I might just send you out to fend for yourself. Anyway, Martina is suitable for you. As for other women, they simply can't compare to her."
Martina had to interrupted, "Jack, you're being too generous with your praise. I'm nowhere near as good as you describe."
Jack said seriously, "I really think you are good. You mustn't underestimate yourself, kid. I'm not just saying that; I mean it."
Indeed, for Martina, Jack was even willing to consider sending his own biological grandson away. That's how much he valued her.
Martina lowered her head once more, uncertain if there was anything else she could say. It seemed like any further words would be in vain.
They arrived at the restaurant. Benjamin could only silently follow behind Martina and Jack, as if he were an assistant.
Simon and Nathan could only linger at the back, alternately exchanging nervous glances. They wondered if Benjamin had already fallen out of favor. It was startling to think that he might be less valued than Miss Martinez.
Nathan had a sense that something was amiss between the two, so he couldn't resist probing Simon for information. "Simon, during the time when Mr. Jack Walker wasn't around, did Mr. Benjamin Walker and Mrs. Martina Walker have some problems?"
These were apparent changes to anyone with a discerning eye, but Jack had kept them under wraps, and he didn't want to know the details of what had transpired between the two. Sharing that knowledge wouldn't have been helpful, but he wished for an outcome in his favor. After all, a girl as good as Martina was hard to find, and he didn't want his grandson to regret it in the future.
Simon carefully glanced ahead, ensuring no one was eavesdropping on their conversation before lowering his voice to respond. "Nathan, you're not aware, but Mrs. Martina Walker has indeed undergone significant changes recently."
Nathan was taken aback. "I feel like Mr. Benjamin Walker has gone through some significant changes too."
Simon gave Nathan a calming look. "Don't rush me; let me explain slowly. To be honest, both of them have gone through substantial changes. It's not something that can be explained in a few sentences. If you push me, I won't say anything."
Nathan could only keep silent, listening attentively as Simon provided some insights into what had transpired during his absence. When he learned that Martina had been willing to endure hardships, even disappearing for a month without wanting to be with Benjamin, he couldn't help but widen his eyes in astonishment.
"Is this true? Mrs. Martina Walker would actually do this when she used to be so clingy to Mr. Benjamin Walker...?"
Indeed, that was the case. Martina had once given up everything, from her dignity to her pride, to cling to Benjamin. She had cast those concerns aside, all in an effort to spend more time with him.
But now, the fact that Martina was willing to go to such great lengths to distance herself from Benjamin was a monumental change. It was hard to believe, even when seen with one's own eyes.
Nathan's surprise was completely understandable, as he, too, wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't witnessed it himself. As for Benjamin's transformation, it left him utterly astonished.
"Mr. Benjamin Walker can do all this for Mrs. Martina Walker now, so it seems that their love is real. I just hope that in the future, there will be more sincerity and trust between them. I believe they'll see better days soon..."
In Nathan's eyes, with Benjamin taking charge, everything would fall into place. If he wanted to win back Martina's favor, it should be quite easy.
However, for Simon, who had spent so much time by their side, his thoughts were not quite as optimistic. He even felt a sense of hardship and difficulty. He muttered softly under his breath, "Well, who knows? I hope it does work out like that."
