Chapter 228: His Deliberate Weakness
It's unclear how much time had passed, but Martina and Elena had been chatting for quite a while when they heard the sound of someone opening the door outside. Martina then hung up the phone.
As soon as she looked up, she saw Benjamin walking in.
Benjamin's face didn't look quite right at this moment, and it was hard to tell what he was thinking. Martina, who had been paying a lot of attention to Benjamin before, could sense a subtle change, especially in his emotions.
"What's wrong with you?" Martina asked.
Benjamin fell into the memories from earlier, thinking about what Jack had said to him.
"Can't you show some effort, kid? Your girl is almost being snatched away by someone else, and you don't even know how to work hard. If she really runs away, don't blame me for not warning you in advance! I've done what I can for now, and I've given what I should. The rest is up to you. Work hard. I'll give you two months to figure out how to get the marriage certificate with her. If you can't get it, I won't mind having a different grandson. You're really not competent at all!"
Jack was really angry. His chest heaved violently with each sentence he spoke. Fortunately, he managed to maintain his composure and continued, "Also, for the next little while, you need to behave and stop messing around with things that don't concern you. I've already met with the Paloma family, and they still hope to get Amy released. But the situation has already happened, and it's so heinous that they can't release her. You should do what you have to do, and don't let personal feelings interfere with the law."
Jack still seemed concerned, so he privately reminded Benjamin of many things. He used his seniority to the fullest extent possible. He just hoped that Benjamin wouldn't do anything foolish. He continued, "This is your only chance to get your attitude in check. If you don't seize this opportunity, be careful that Martina won't even let you see her in the future."
After saying all this, Jack pretended to have a headache and asked Benjamin to leave. He truly didn't want to keep him for a single second longer.
Benjamin now felt like he had become someone everyone despised, even though he had previously been a high and mighty figure, and no one would treat him this way. But now, things were different. The difference was so great that he found it unbelievable. He didn't remember being this annoying before.
Now, back in the bedroom he shared with Martina, he felt some of his exhaustion drain away. It must be said that she was incredibly important to him, irreplaceable, in fact.
Benjamin managed to gather his thoughts after hearing Martina's question. He replied, "Nothing, just got a scolding from my grandfather."
Feeling awkward, Martina thought that this probably had something to do with her. So she decided to voice her thoughts, "Is it because of my attitude that your grandfather reprimanded you?"
At first, Benjamin wanted to reject Jack's suggestion. After all, this approach seemed difficult and not very pleasing, and it might even make Martina feel that he was useless. But then he had a change of heart. Jack had said that during special times, one needed to use special means. If he didn't take some measures now, his future wife might really run away with someone else.
Especially Alejandro, he was like a hawk eyeing his territory. Even though he hadn't revealed it too blatantly yet, he would often intentionally assert his presence in front of Benjamin's woman.
As a man, how could Benjamin not understand what was going on in Alejandro's mind? It was precisely because he understood it so well that he needed to take preventive measures. After all, he couldn't just stand by and watch someone snatch his woman away. It was even more unbearable than murder.
So, surprisingly, Benjamin adopted a tone of vulnerability and once again met Martina's gaze with a touch of resentment. "Yeah, my grandfather said I'm useless, and my wife is about to run off with someone else."
Honestly, these words didn't sound like something that would come out of Benjamin's mouth, but they were indeed his own words. At this moment, even Martina couldn't believe her ears. She really couldn't understand why Benjamin's change had been so drastic lately. Was he really shameless? How could he say such things with a straight face?
"What do you mean your wife is about to run off with someone else? I'm not your wife," Martina said, embarrassed and lowered her head. She didn't want to see Benjamin deliberately acting weak. Honestly, his current demeanor was truly heart-wrenching.
Seeing Martina's reaction, Benjamin knew he was on the right track. It might be unethical, but to prevent his girl from running away with someone else, he had to continue down this path.
With a deliberate pace, Benjamin approached Martina and gently took her hand. As she slowly raised her gaze, he crouched down and looked into her eyes with a serious and dignified posture, capturing her attention.
When had this man ever lowered his status and identity so meekly? It was probably only in front of Martina that he would behave this way.
Martina was somewhat shocked deep down, and she instinctively tugged on Benjamin's arm. "What are you doing down there? If you have something to say, stand up and say it."
But Benjamin was persistent, remaining crouched down as if he had some peculiar fetish. "Aren't you my wife? My wife is about to run off with someone else, and I'm just crouching down. What's wrong with that?"
Faced with such shameless words, Martina's cheeks instantly turned red, feeling the intense heat in her cheeks, unable to form a coherent sentence. "You... How can you be so shameless, saying such things without a hint of embarrassment? Benjamin, I've underestimated you!"
Benjamin persisted, lightly hooking Martina's palm with his finger. "So, are you really not planning to discuss our future with me?"
This man already had a pair of captivating eyes. Just one glance could make someone unforgettable for a lifetime, not to mention when he used those charming eyes to look at her. It was an irresistible temptation, and even Martina couldn't easily deflect it. Her heart was beating rapidly.
