Chapter 223: This Old Man Was Incredibly Shameless
The more Gary talked, the more Jack found himself increasingly displeased with Gary. This old man was incredibly shameless. How did Jack not notice that before?
Quite a few incidents were deliberately orchestrated by Amy from the Paloma family. She nearly destroyed Jack's granddaughter-in-law. Yet here was Gary, claiming it was all a misunderstanding?
A misunderstanding? And Gary had the audacity to claim it was nothing more than playful banter? If the same situation were to happen with Amy, would they be as forgiving? Jack didn't need to speculate. In such a scenario, the Paloma family would likely be the first to reject it and might even retaliate against Martina promptly.
Thus, a glaring double standard within the Paloma family became evident.
If it weren't for their longstanding relationship, Jack might have lost his patience long ago and stormed out. It was just too infuriating. Even the most shameless person should care a bit about their dignity. But these people didn't seem to care at all.
Jack took a deep breath to prevent himself from erupting, saying, "So, as per your opinion, this entire issue is the fault of my granddaughter-in-law?"
Don't be fooled by Jack's tone of questioning; he actually carried a tone of certainty because Gary had made his intentions quite clear. Even if Jack wanted to refute it, he had to see if Jack would provide that opportunity.
However, in this moment, Gary seemed to ignore Jack's specific reference to Martina as his granddaughter-in-law.
"Yes, this issue indeed doesn't involve my daughter. It's simply a misunderstanding," Gary said with a shameless tone, rubbing his hands. "So, my friend, would you be kind enough to help me release my granddaughter?"
"How could a place like that be where my granddaughter could stay? It's simply not fit for human habitation! As long as I'm around, both of our families will live together harmoniously."
"Who knows, in the future, our two families might become in-laws. That way, we'll be even closer, and all the past incidents can be water under the bridge, right?"
Jack was truly exasperated. Such audacity was unacceptable even between close friends. It was clear that Gary was not taking Jack's granddaughter-in-law seriously.
However, the problem was, Jack was very protective of his family. He had been inclined to support Martina, once his stance was clear, no one could change his mind.
"Gary Paloma, how did I not realize how shameless you are?" Jack snapped. "Even now, you're trying to intentionally damage my granddaughter-in-law's reputation."
He seemed to have lost his patience, as he directly addressed Gary's full name. This caught Gary off guard.
"Old friend?" The call from Gary was so feeble, almost as if he lacked confidence in his own words. "What do you mean by that? Do you think that this matter is truly Amy's fault? How can you talk to me like this and even directly call my name? We've had a long-standing friendship, and yet you act this way, huh?"
"I've heard about that woman, Martina. She's nothing more than a clown, right? You can't possibly take her seriously, can you?"
Even at this stage, Gary was stubborn and unyielding. Well, there's no point in arguing any further. Some people are just impossible to reason with.
Adding to the argument, Adam chimed in, "Exactly, this matter is clearly Martina's fault. She's not a good person. She's been up to no good in private. Otherwise, how could these things have happened? Anyway, we shouldn't blame my sister too much. It's possible that this is just Martina's way of pretending!"
"Jack, please don't let yourself be deceived by such a woman. She's got a lot on her mind, and if you fall for her tricks, it's like falling into her trap!"
As Adam continued speaking, he became more animated, even bringing up past events, saying, "Furthermore, Martina had been treated poorly by us before, and yet she could still pretend like nothing happened."
"She stayed by Benjamin's side every day, shameless and all, even enduring physical abuse without a word, until she finally ran away from home one time."
"Time and again, she wanted to force Benjamin's hand, merely trying to give herself an excuse."
"Jack, surely you won't just stand by and let a woman like her marry Benjamin, becoming your granddaughter-in-law, right?"
Adam thought that anyone with a bit of intelligence wouldn't accept a woman like Martina as their granddaughter-in-law, so Martina was definitely out of the picture this time.
But did Adam ever stop to think that Jack's attitude earlier had already made everything clear? Some people might care about these things, but it didn't mean everyone would feel the same way.
Jack's anger continued to escalate, and the next moment, he slapped the table hard. "That's enough! You just won't let it go, will you? You think you can tarnish my granddaughter-in-law's name behind her back just because she's not here?"
"Let me tell you, my granddaughter-in-law, Martina Martinez, is good, and she's so much better than your granddaughter, Amy."
Jack stood up, his chest heaving with anger. He couldn't continue this conversation any longer, and it seemed like he couldn't even eat the meal.
"It's Amy who clearly wasn't raised properly and did so many shameful things in private. Now she wants to turn the tables on us? Do you think I'm just stupid?"
"Gary, I thought my earlier hints could make you come to your senses, and we could continue being friends. But now, it seems like there's no need for that."
Even a fool could notice that something was wrong with Jack this time, let alone Gary himself.
Gary's face showed fear. "What do you want to do? We've been friends for many years. Do you really want to let an outsider affect our relationship?"
Jack spoke word by word, partly to correct the way others referred to Martina and to support her in public, so that nobody would dare to bully her behind her back.
What a silly girl! When she was bullied, she didn't even think to complain to her family. Did she think she was all alone? That's probably why she was so gloomy before!
