A Door Closed
The sun was setting as Louis arrived at the townhouse he and Victoria used to live in together. It looked the same-clean and neat, with trimmed hedges and windows glowing in the light. But it felt different. The warmth and comfort were gone. It was just a house now.
Louis sat in the car, gripping the steering wheel tightly. He hadn't been here since Victoria asked for a divorce. He had avoided coming because he didn't want to face her or the problems that led to this. But now, with the divorce papers with him, he knew he had to talk to her.
Taking a deep breath, Louis got out of the car and walked to the front steps. His heart raced as he knocked on the door, the sound echoing in the quiet evening. He wasn't sure what to say, but he had to try. He didn't want things to end without at least making an effort.
The door stayed closed for a moment, and Louis felt anxious, hoping to see a sign that Victoria was home. Just as he was about to knock again, Sarah, Victoria's assistant, opened the door a little.
"Mr. Sebastian," Sarah said politely but carefully. "What are you doing here?"
Louis swallowed hard, trying to sound calm. "I need to see Victoria. Is she here?"
Sarah hesitated, looking back inside before stepping outside and closing the door behind her. "She's here, but... she doesn't want to be disturbed."
Louis's heart sank. "Please, Sarah. I just need five minutes to talk to her."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Sebastian," Sarah said gently but firmly. "Victoria asked not to see you right now."
Louis felt frustrated, his hands clenching into fists. "This is important. I need to talk to her about the divorce. I can't let this happen without trying to fix things."
Sarah sighed, her expression softening. "I understand, but she needs space right now. You have to respect that."
"Space?" Louis said, his voice raising slightly. "How much more space does she need? I haven't seen her in weeks! How can I fix things if she won't talk to me?"
Sarah looked at him sadly. "Maybe it's not about fixing things. Maybe she needs to heal."
Louis felt crushed. He knew Victoria was hurting, but letting her go felt impossible. "I love her, Sarah. Doesn't she know that?"
Sarah nodded slowly. "She knows. But sometimes love isn't enough. She needs to find peace apart from you."
Louis's frustration boiled over, and he stepped closer, pleading. "Please, just let me see her. I need to tell her I'll do anything to fix this."
"I can't, Louis," Sarah said softly. "She doesn't want to see you. I'm sorry."
The finality in her voice hit him hard. Louis stepped back, realizing she wouldn't let him in. For the first time, he understood this might be the end.
He ran a hand through his hair, thinking of everything he wanted to say to Victoria. "Can you at least tell her I came by? That I wanted to talk?"
"I'll tell her," Sarah promised gently. "But I can't say it will change anything."
Louis nodded, feeling tight in his throat. "Thank you."
Sarah gave him a small, sad smile before going back inside and closing the door softly. The sound felt like the end of his marriage, and Louis stood there for a moment, staring at the closed door, feeling the weight of everything.
Inside the house, Victoria stood at the top of the stairs, her heart racing. She heard the knock and knew it was Louis, but she couldn't face him. Not now.
She watched as Sarah returned from the door. "He's gone," Sarah said quietly.
Victoria nodded, feeling tight in her chest. "What did he say?"
"He just wanted to talk. He needed to try to fix things," Sarah replied.
Victoria's heart ached. She knew Louis wanted to make things right, but it was complicated. There was too much pain. "I can't," she whispered. "I can't see him right now."
"You don't have to until you're ready," Sarah said softly.
Victoria hugged herself, feeling guilt and sadness. She didn't want to hurt Louis, but thinking about seeing him made the pain too much. She wasn't ready to face the problems between them.
"He said he loves you," Sarah added gently. "He wanted me to tell you that."
Victoria felt tears in her eyes. "I know he does. But love isn't enough anymore."
The silence was heavy with all the things Victoria wanted to say but couldn't. Part of her still wanted to fight for their marriage, but another part knew walking away was the best way to protect herself.
"I just need time," Victoria whispered.
"Take all the time you need. He'll wait," Sarah said.
But as Victoria watched Louis leave, she wondered if time would ever be enough to heal their wounds.
Louis drove away from the townhouse, feeling regret. The empty streets stretched out ahead, but all he could see was Victoria's face-the sadness in her eyes the last time they were together.
He had come hoping for a chance to fix things, but now he realized that maybe there was no fixing this. Maybe their love, no matter how much he wanted it to last, wasn't enough.
For the first time, Louis thought that he might have lost her for good.
