Jane
The morning sun filtering through the curtains cast a soft glow over the Sebastian estate as Victoria moved quietly through the kitchen, making herself a cup of coffee. This past couple of days had been her attempt to wrap her mind around her conversation with Louis, the grand gesture he had made, all over to work on their marriage, to truly fight for them. It had given her hope, a sense that maybe they could rebuild what had been broken.
But beneath that hope, the doubt still lingered, the fear still lingered. Could they overcome everything they'd been through?
Were they able to find a way back to trusting one another, to being partners as they once had been?
Standing by the window and staring out into the garden, the doorbell suddenly pierced the silence. Victoria scrunched up her face since she wasn't expecting company and set her cup down, heading toward the front door. As she opened the door, her heart went into skips at the vision of the woman standing on the doorstep.
She was tall, with dark hair pulled back into a neat ponytail, and her sharp green eyes held a mixture of hesitation and determination.
Still, there was something far too familiar about her, though Victoria couldn't quite place it.
"Can I help you?" Victoria asked, her tone cautious yet polite.
Restlessly, she edged, her purse clutched tightly in her hands. "I'm looking for Louis," she said. Her voice was steady enough, but there was an edge of tension to it. "I. I need to speak to him. It's important."
Victoria's heart began to race. Something was unsettling in the woman's manner, something that spoke volumes beyond a casual visit. "He's not here right now," Victoria replied. "But I'm his wife. Is there something I can help you with?"
The woman paused for a moment, her eyes flashing between uncertainty and something else, until she spoke again. "My name is Jane. I used to know Louis... a long time ago."
Victoria's stomach knotted. She'd never heard Louis mention a woman named Jane. "How do you know him?"
Jane swallowed, her expression softening as her gaze fell. "We were... involved. Years ago, before he met you."
A cold wave of unease washed over Victoria, and she instinctively crossed her arms. "What are you doing here?"
Jane's eyes met Victoria's, and in them was something almost like regret. "I wouldn't have come if it weren't necessary. But there's something Louis needs to know. Something that will change everything."
Victoria felt her heartbeat in her chest, her mind racing. "What are you talking about?"
Jane took a deep breath; the slight shake of her hands belied the outer calmness. "I didn't know how to tell him before, but Louis has a child. A daughter."
Victoria stared at her, the words hitting her like a punch to the gut. "What?"
Jane's voice shook as she continued. "I found out after we had already broken up. I didn't feel it was right then to go to him, and I have regretted it ever since. But now... she's ten years old, and she deserves to know her father."
Victoria's mind went blank, her entire body frozen in shock. She had never imagined in a hundred years that something like this could ever be true. Louis might have a child out there, a child he doesn't even know exists.
"You are telling me that Louis has a ten-year-old daughter that he's never met?" Victoria asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jane nodded, and her voice carried the sadness of her face. "I know all this must come as quite a shock, and I do understand if you are angry. However, I am not here to cause trouble. I just want my daughter-our daughter-to know her father. Too much time has flown by, and he needs to know the truth.
Victoria's chest constricted as a wave of emotions crashed over her in shock, confusion, and even betrayal. She didn't know how to process this from Jane, didn't even know how to wrap her mind around the fact that Louis had a child, a whole other life that she had known nothing about.
"Why didn't you tell him sooner?" Victoria asked, her voice quivering.
Jane shrugged, letting her shoulder droop in a sigh. "I was young, scared, and didn't think Louis would want to be tied down. When I realized how wrong I was, it seemed too late. But now. Now it seems like the only thing I can do."
Her mind was racing, her thoughts hitting against each other. How was Louis going to react to this? How was this going to change their already fragile marriage? And more importantly, what did this mean for them, for the life they had built together?
"Louis needs to hear this from you," Victoria finally said, her voice so much stronger than she was feeling at that moment. "You need to tell him everything."
Jane nodded, her features softening. "I know, I'll come back when he's home."
The moment Jane turned to leave, the pounding in Victoria's heart came with the sense of dread settling in. She watched as Jane disappeared down the driveway and closed the door behind her.
For a long moment, Victoria said nothing. She stood there, her hands trembling with the realization of what she'd just been hit with.
Louis had a child daughter he didn't even know existed. The revelation laid bare the fragile hope that they could rebuild and work their way back to each other.
And now this.
Hours passed, but the weight of that revelation never left her mind. When Louis finally did come back that evening, his usual worn but determined expression greeted her, but all Victoria could see was the man who had, unknowingly, fathered a child with another woman.
"Hey," Louis said, leaning in to kiss her, but Victoria stepped back, her face pale.
Louis's brow furrowed, concern flashing in his eyes. "Victoria, what's wrong?"
She stared at him for a long moment, her throat tight with the words she didn't know how to say. "Louis, we need to talk."
His concern deepened, and he took a step closer. "What is it? What happened?"
"A woman came by the house today," Victoria said, shaking. "Her name was Jane."
Louis's eyes widened in surprise, but he kept silent, awaiting the rest of what she had to say.
"She told me something, Louis. Something I think you need to hear." Victoria took a deep breath, composing herself before speaking further. "She said you have a daughter. A daughter you didn't know about."
Louis's face went white; his eyes were wide with incredulity. "What?"
"She said her name is Jane, and that you two were involved years ago," Victoria continued, her voice trembling. "She found out she was pregnant after you ended things, and she never told you. But now... your daughter is ten years old."
Louis stumbled backward, his hand covering his mouth as he tried to wrap his head around what Victoria was telling him. "I... I have a daughter.
Victoria nodded, her eyes brimming with tears. "Yes. And she wants to meet you."
For a long moment, Louis was frozen in place, the weight of Jane's revelation settling over him like a heavy fog. He could say nothing; he could do nothing; he could think nothing.
"I don't know what to do," Victoria whispered, her voice trembling. "I don't know how to handle this."
Louis stared at her, his eyes brimming with shock, fear, and regret. "I didn't know. I swear I didn't know."
"I believe you," Victoria whispered, "but this changes everything."
As the silence between them stretched, both of them wrestling with the gravity of this new reality, painfully clear was the fact that one thing was irrevocably certain: their lives would never be the same again.
