Reputation Torn to Shreds
For weeks, Victoria had fought her share of battles, but something felt completely different today. Her finger moved down the length of her phone headlines were worse than she had expected, worse than anything she could have imagined:
"Victoria Sebastian: Siphoning Millions off the Family Business?
"Rising Star or Manipulative Power Player? The True Face of Victoria Sebastian"
"Sebastian Industries Scandal: How Deep Does the Corruption Go?"
Each article twisted facts into half-baked rumors promoted as full-blown accusations. There were the same pictures of her and Louis on the front covers but in completely different portrayals. Instead of admiration, accusations. Instead of respect and disdain.
Her phone buzzed once more, this time with another notification. She didn't want to see what else the media had created, but she knew she couldn't avoid it. Opening the newest article with a trembling hand, she read:
"Victoria Sebastian's Fall from Grace: How She Used Her Legal Expertise to Manipulate the System for Personal Gain."
Victoria's stomach fell. The story told of embezzlement schemes, replete with forged documents that claimed to implicate her in siphoned company funds at Sebastian Industries. It was a lie, but the minute detail it had been built on was just eerie in its credibility.
She could hardly breathe as the weight set in. Her career and her reputation were all going down the drain.
Louis burst into the room, pale, clutching his phone tightly in his hand. "Have you seen this?" he asked, imploringly panicked.
"They're saying that you've been stealing from the company. This is no longer a rumor, Victoria; they're gunning for you hard."
Victoria nodded numbly, her eyes on the floor. "I saw it. They are trying to destroy me, Louis. Somebody is feeding them those lies, and I don't know how to stop this."
Louis ran a hand through his hair; he was at his wit's end. "We need to do something. We need to issue a statement, get ahead of this before it spirals any further out of control."
Victoria merely shook her head. "It won't matter, Louis. They've already made up their minds. They don't want truth; they want a scandal."
Louis's eyes clouded with dark anger as his jaw clenched in a tight line. "This isn't just the press, Victoria. There's someone behind all this. Somebody's trying to bring you down, and they're doing a damn good job of it."
Victoria's heart raced as she realized the veracity of Louis' words. This wasn't bad luck, nor was it a coincidence. This was a planned attack. And there was only one person she could think of who had both the motive and means to pull this off.
"Daniella," Victoria whispered with ice in her tone.
Louis' eyes widened. "You think Daniella is behind this?
Victoria nodded as the thoughts tumbled. "She's never forgiven me for the estate battle. She blames me for everything--losing the family fortune, losing her status. And now she's coming after me with everything she's got."
Louis's face tightened further as the reality of the situation fell over him. "I'll talk to her," he said, his voice cold. "If she's behind this, I'll put a stop to it."
Victoria stood, her chest tight with a mixture of anger and despair. "It's too late for that, Louis. She's already done the damage. Even if she stops now, my reputation is ruined. These stories-they'll stick, no matter what we say."
Louis moved closer, taking her hands in his. "We'll fight this, Victoria. I won't let Daniella destroy you. We'll clear your name."
But even as he spoke, Victoria could see the doubt in his eyes. He wanted to believe they could fix this, salve her reputation, and stop Daniella's revenge, but the truth was neither of them knew how.
As Louis left to go and sort his sister out, Victoria sat down at her desk, trying to get her head around it all. She opened her laptop and was taken aback to find many articles and comments already flowing in. The media had turned on her with vengeance, and the damage was spreading far beyond the headlines.
It buzzed again; another notification. This time, it was a message from a coworker at the firm she used to work with.
"Victoria, I don't know what's going on, but the partners are talking. They're thinking about cutting ties with you. I'm so sorry."
Victoria's blood ran cold. It was as if her career-everything she worked for-was slipping right through her fingers. The firm, which once praised her brilliance to the extent of making her an important part of it, now distanced itself from her, afraid to be tainted by the scandal.
She shut her eyes, feeling the burden of it all weighing in heavily on her. It was so unfair; she had fought so hard to build up her reputation and her place in the legal world, and now it was all being torn apart by lies and manipulation. Daniella was behind it all.
Across town, Daniella sat in a sleek, modern office, glued to her computer screen scrolling through article after article about Victoria.
The smear campaign was working better than she had expected. Every outlet picked up the story, and the comments section was full of deleterious remarks about Victoria's integrity, character, and her place in the Sebastian family.
"Perfect," Daniella muttered to herself, her lips hooking into a delighted smile.
Martin Lockhart sat opposite her, leaning back in his chair with a quieter version of satisfaction. "The stories are starting to gain traction. She's already on the ropes. A few more pushes and her career will be over.
Daniella glared at him with her eyes afire with malice. "This is just the beginning, I want to make sure she's finished. When I'm done with her, she'll have nothing left in her career, not her reputation, not even Louis."
Martin cocked an eyebrow. "What's next?"
Daniella smiled, her smile growing bigger. "We'll hit her where it hurts most. Personal scandals. We'll leak rumors about her private life, about her marriage falling apart. People love a good fall from grace, and they'll feast on every single tidbit that comes their way. By the time we're through, she'll just be the cautionary tale of the town."
Martin let out a dark chuckle. "Consider it done."
Daniella leaned back in her chair; the feeling of triumph washed over her. This was the revenge she had been waiting for. Victoria took everything away from her, and this was Daniella's turn to watch as Victoria's life crumbled because of all the scandal and lies.
Meanwhile, back at the Sebastian estate, Victoria sat in silence amidst the blitz of headlines that had become her life. Her mind raced in search of a defense, a means to clear her name. But with every breaking story that crossed her door, with each new wave of rumors and lies, she felt herself slipping deeper into despair.
It buzzed once more, this time from her lawyer.
"Victoria, we need to talk."
With that, the reality of what was happening to her fell on her shoulders like a ton of bricks. Daniella had cast the first stone, and now Victoria's future would take a complete spiral out of control.
