A Tempting Offer
Victoria sat by the window of the hospital with her gaze strayed away from the horizon as sunlight filtered through the blinds. The last few weeks had been a messed-up blur of emotions: fear, betrayal, and a deep sense of isolation. And just to find out that Daniella had poisoned her all along was like receiving a hard blow, her trust in the Sebastian family almost shattered. Victoria, though getting reassurances from Louis and a lot of effort on his part to bring Daniella to her knees, felt she could not wake up from a nightmare that was just reality to her.
The door to her room opened softly, and Victoria turned her head to see Alex Hart, a former colleague of hers, step inside. The smile on his face was warm and steady. It was in full contrast to the chaos that had conquered her life in recent times. Alex had always been a source of comfort for her, a reminder of the life she once had before all this happened.
"Alex," Victoria said softly, managing a slight smile.
"I heard about the gala," he said, his voice full of concern as he approached her. "About everything else that's been going on. I wanted to check in on you and see how you're holding up."
Victoria nodded; her smile faltered and the weight of her situation settled once again over her. "I'm. Managing. It's just that everything feels so overwhelming.
Alex pulled a chair up beside her, joining her with quiet intensity. "I can't even fathom what you've had to live through, and with Daniella now. That's beyond awful. You deserve so much better than this."
Victoria looked away, heart heavy. "I don't even know what to think anymore. It's as though my whole life has been turned upside down. Every time I think things are getting better, something worse happens."
Alex reached for her hand, his touch gentle yet firm. "You don't have to stay in this mess, Victoria. You're not tied to it forever."
Victoria looked at him, brow furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean?
Alex's eyes softened as he leaned in slightly, his voice lowering. "I've been thinking about you a lot, everything you've been going through. And thinking about how you deserve a fresh start, away from all this pain, away from the Sebastian family."
Victoria's heart skipped a beat. To be able to walk away from it the stress, the uncertainty, and the never-ending battles with the Sebastians was something almost too terrifying to consider, yet at the same time so alluring.
"What are you saying?" she asked cautiously.
Alex smiled his eyes with a flicker of excitement. "I have a proposition for you. You know that my firm has been expanding rapidly, and I'm overseeing several new projects. I need someone like you-smart, talented, capable-to help lead one of those projects. It's a lucrative position, Victoria. You'd have financial security, stability, and. peace."
Victoria stared at him, the wheels turning in her head. More than once in the last few weeks, she had considered leaving her current life behind and starting afresh. Leaving Louis, leaving everything she ever struggled for, wasn't something she could so easily decide on.
"Alex, I don't know." Victoria started with trepidation in her voice.
"Think about it," Alex softly intervened. "You have passed through so much, and you deserve a break. You don't need to keep on fighting for something that's destroying you. This job might just be your chance to start over away from all the chaos."
Victoria felt her chest tighten as she absorbed his words. She was exhausted. Weary. She'd been fighting against her illness and the unending stress between her and the Sebastian family for months. Louis had been right there beside her, but even his love and comfort could not erase the scars of Daniella's betrayal.
"Where would this job take me?" she asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alex smiled, catching the interest. "It's in California. A fresh start in a new city, where no one knows what you've been through. You could rebuild your life there, Victoria. You wouldn't have to look over your shoulder anymore."
California. The thought of leaving New York, leaving the Sebastians, and starting afresh in one of the world's most vibrant cities was exhilarating and terrifying. Victoria had always been drawn to New York energy, the opportunities, the anonymity. She could slip into a new life there, free from the shadows of her past. But then there was Louis.
"I cannot just leave Louis," Victoria said, her voice dripping with emotion. "He has been through all this with me. He has fought so hard to protect me."
Alex's face relaxed, but his eyes shone with resolution. "Louis loves you, I know that. But sometimes love isn't enough. Look at what you've been through, Victoria. Is this the life you want? Constantly looking over your shoulder, wondering if Daniella's going to strike again? Worrying about the next scandal or the next fight?"
Victoria's heart twisted painfully. Truth was, she no longer knew what she wanted. She deeply loved Louis but was suffocated by the constant drama surrounding the Sebastian family. A fresh start in life where she could be free of the endless battles was tempting.
"I just don't know, Alex," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking. "I'm not sure I'm ready to make that kind of decision."
Alex leaned forward as his gaze nailed hers. "I'm not asking you to decide right now. Just. Think about it. You deserve a life where you're not in survival mode always, Victoria. You deserve happiness. And I can give that to you."
Victoria shut her eyes now, and her head was essentially spinning with story possibilities. Her heart became divided between two worlds: one of love and loyalty for Louis, another showing her a future where she could be free of the toxic legacy of the Sebastian family.
"Take your time," Alex said softly, standing up and landing a soft kiss on her forehead. "But remember, the offer won't be there forever. You have to choose what's best for you."
As Alex left the room, Victoria's heart ached with indecision. She had fought so hard to stay alive, to fight for her life with Louis. But now, with Alex's offer on the table, she found herself questioning everything.
Could she turn her back upon Louis, on the life they had built together? Or was it time to choose herself, to leave the pain behind and start fresh?
The decision weighed heavily upon her, and as the sun sank below the horizon, Victoria was left with only one question that she couldn't answer.
