Cracks in the Foundation
Louis stood by the hospital window, staring at the city. He felt tense inside, especially since Alex had come back into their lives. The idea of Alex being close to Victoria and trying to help her made Louis angry. He wanted to trust Victoria, but he could see her growing closer to Alex. With everything else going wrong, he was losing patience.
"Louis?" Victoria's soft voice brought him back to reality. She was sitting up in bed, looking tired but concerned.
Louis forced a smile. "Yeah?"
"You've been quiet," she said gently. "Is something wrong?"
He paused, thinking about Alex. He tried to hide his jealousy, but it was getting harder. Alex always seemed to be there, acting like he could save her, and that bothered Louis. Victoria hadn't told Alex to back off, which made it worse.
"Alex," Louis said, his tone colder than he meant.
Victoria frowned. "What about him?"
Louis turned from the window, frustration spilling out. "He's always here, offering you solutions. Like he can fix everything."
Victoria sighed, feeling down. She had sensed Louis's jealousy of Alex, and it was wearing her out. "Louis, he's just trying to help.
He knows I'm going through a lot."
"Help?" Louis raised his voice. "He's trying to take you away from me, offering you jobs in New York."
Victoria's eyes widened at his tone. "That's not fair. He's been a friend when I needed one."
"And what about me?" Louis shot back, his voice strained. "I've been there for you too. I've fought for you. It feels like that's not enough anymore."
Victoria felt sad listening to him. She knew Louis was under a lot of pressure with work and her illness, but his anger was pushing her away. She felt stuck between the life she had with Louis, which was full of love but also chaos, and the fresh start Alex offered.
"Louis," she said softly, trying to stay calm, "I love you for all you've done, but I'm exhausted. I can't take much more."
Louis's heart sank. "You're thinking about leaving, aren't you?" he asked, trembling.
Victoria looked down, her hands shaking. "I don't want to, but I can't keep living like this. I feel like I'm drowning."
Louis's anger mixed with fear. "So you're going to run away with Alex? Leave everything behind because it's hard?"
Victoria snapped back, her frustration boiling over. "This isn't just about hard times! I've been hurt and betrayed by your family! I don't know who I am anymore."
Louis clenched his fists, feeling a mix of anger and fear. "So you think Alex is the answer? That he'll give you a perfect life, free from our problems?"
"He's offering me a chance to breathe," Victoria said quietly, her voice breaking. "Something I haven't been able to do."
Louis moved closer, his eyes dark. "I'm your husband. I'm supposed to be your support. But now it feels like you're slipping away and I don't know how to stop it."
Victoria felt pain at his words, but she also felt herself slipping away from him and their life together.
"Louis, I don't want to hurt you," she said softly, tears in her eyes. "But I need to find what's best for me."
Louis's heart sank as he realized the truth. "And what if what's best for you is leaving me?"
Victoria cried, her voice shaky. "I don't know. I wish I had answers."
The tension between Louis and Victoria only grew worse in the following days. Every talk seemed to turn into a fight, with Louis becoming more possessive and Victoria feeling trapped. The more Louis pushed, the more Victoria turned to Alex for comfort.
Alex kept being there for her, checking in and offering support without pressure. His calmness was a sharp contrast to Louis's anger.
One afternoon, Victoria was in her hospital room when Alex arrived with flowers. His warm smile comforted her.
"I thought you could use these to brighten your room," Alex said, placing the flowers down.
Victoria smiled, grateful. "Thank you, Alex. You didn't have to."
"I just wanted you to know you're not alone," Alex said. "You have people who care about you."
Victoria nodded, feeling emotional. "I appreciate that."
Alex sat next to her, looking serious. "Have you thought more about my offer?"
Victoria sighed, feeling the weight of the choice. "I have. It's complicated."
"I understand," Alex said gently. "But know I'll support you, whatever you decide. If you want to stay with Louis, that's fine. But if you want a fresh start, I'll be there for you."
Victoria felt tears welling. The idea was tempting, but leaving Louis felt wrong too.
"I don't know what to do," she admitted quietly.
"You don't have to decide now," Alex said softly, putting his hand on hers. "Just remember-you deserve to be happy."
Victoria looked into Alex's eyes, realizing he was right. She deserved happiness, but finding it was not clear, especially with Louis becoming more difficult.
That night, Louis returned to the hospital, feeling dark and upset. He noticed how Victoria and Alex interacted, which made him uneasy. His jealousy was boiling over, and the fear of losing her was consuming him.
"Are you going to act like nothing's wrong?" Louis asked sharply as he entered.
Victoria, worn out from everything, looked up. "Louis, I'm tired. Can we not do this now?"
"No, we need to," Louis insisted. "Every time I come here, you seem further away, and I see how Alex looks at you."
Victoria felt her heart racing, frustration rising. "Louis, stop. This is about us and everything we've faced."
"And you think running off with him will fix that?" Louis snapped.
Victoria's eyes filled with tears. "I don't know! I can't keep living like this, with you always accusing me."
Louis's expression changed from anger to deep fear. "I don't want to lose you."
Victoria wiped her tears. "I don't want to lose you either, but I'm scared. I'm scared we can't get past this."
Louis stepped closer, his voice quiet. "We can, Victoria. We just need to fight for us."
But even as he spoke, Victoria felt the distance growing between them, the cracks in their relationship widening each day.
And she wasn't sure if they could ever find their way back.
