Closing In
Louis sat in the waiting room, weighed down by exhaustion as if draped with a heavy cloak. His eyes were red from lack of sleep; his mind was a race with thoughts: Victoria's health, her paranoia eating away at her, and questions such as who could do this to them without any answers. He couldn't get rid of the gnawing sensation that something much more sinister lay at the something that couldn't be explained by the inconclusive medical tests.
Daniella. The mention of his sister's name kept rising, and every time that it did his stomach flipped over in trepidation-could she do something like that?
He began scrolling through his phone, his mind elsewhere when suddenly, it buzzed in his hand. It was a call from Mark Caldwell, the private investigator he had hired several weeks back to look into the leaks and Daniella's underhanded activities. But since asking Mark to look into the possibility of poisoning when Victoria's health started to decline again, this call could hold the key to everything.
"Mark," Louis replied with a taut voice. "Tell me you've got something."
"I do," Mark's voice was calm, yet serious. "I've been following up on the leads you gave me, into the possibility of poisoning. I've found something new, but it's not good, Louis."
Louis's heart pounded in his chest. "Go on."
"There's been a pattern of suspicious activity tied to your family's finances," Mark explained. "Particularly Daniella's. I've traced several transactions from her accounts to a man named Gavin Turner, a known hacker. But it goes deeper. One of Gavin's associates has a history with. Well, let's just say he's been involved in more than just digital sabotage. I believe he's the one who provided the poison."
Louis felt the floor shift under him. "You're telling me that Daniella hired someone to poison Victoria?"
"It's not conclusive yet," Mark warned. "But everything I've found indicates this is the path to take. Daniella's been filtering money to this guy, and the timeline coincides with the beginning of Victoria's symptoms."
Louis's mind reeled, trying to fathom this information. Could his very sister have sunk that low? Was Daniella truly that crossed from petty revenge into something far more dangerous and irreversible?
"Is there proof?" Louis asked, stumbling over his words.
"Not yet," Mark replied. "But I'm close. I'll need more time to gather enough concrete evidence to bring it to the authorities. We can't risk tipping Daniella off too soon. She gets wind of this, she'll cover her tracks."
Louis's throat constricted as his mind conjured up Victoria lying in that hospital bed, fighting for her life, while the perpetrator might turn out to be from their own family. "Do whatever it takes, Mark. Just find the proof."
"I will," Mark said reassuringly. "But Louis. be careful. If Daniella's behind this, she's playing a dangerous game. We don't know how far she'll go to protect herself."
Louis slammed the phone down; his head was reeling. The pieces of the jigsaw were coming together, and the picture they painted was worse than he would have dreamed. Daniella's vendetta against Victoria had spiraled into something more sinister, and now her very own brother had to come to terms with the fact that the person poisoning his wife might just be the very same woman who shared his blood.
Back in the hospital room, Victoria was still in a very fragile state. Her paranoia worsened, the distance between her and Louis growing wider every day. He had spent hours by her side, but the fear in her eyes, the way she flinched at the sight of anyone entering the room, spoke far more voluminously of damage spreading quicker than he could repair.
Louis entered the room, forcing a smile as he sat down beside her. "Hey," he said softly, taking her hand in his.
"I spoke to Mark. He's following up on the poisoning theory."
Victoria's eyes fluttered with recognition, but her expression remained hazy. "Poison," she whispered, her voice weak. "Who would do this to me?"
Louis swallowed hard, not sure how much to tell her. She was so fragile already, and the truth-that her very own sister-in-law might be responsible for just a little more than she could handle right now.
"We don't know yet," he said carefully. "But Mark's getting closer to finding out. We'll know soon."
Victoria nodded slowly, but she was staring off a little, lost as her mind began to stray. "I don't trust anyone, Louis," she whispered almost softly. "Not even the doctors. Not even. you."
Louis's heart broke at her words, the paranoia closing in on her tighter. He leaned forward and gently brushed a strand of hair from her face. "I'm here for you," he whispered, trying to mask the pain in his voice. "I'm not going anywhere."
Still, deep inside, he knew words would never be enough to pull her back. Answers were needed, proof was necessary, and above all, he had to stop Daniella before it was too late.
Later that evening, Mark Caldwell sat in front of the computer, scanning through financial records, encrypted messages, and just about everything that could prove Daniella's connection with the poisoning. His fingers scrolled down at high speed; his face lit by the soft glow of the monitor. A breakthrough finally came in the form of a few emails, encrypted but poorly so-between Daniella and Gavin Turner. The content was ambiguous, but the innuendos pointed toward something much more sinister.
"Make it untraceable. I don't want them to be able to find anything leading back to me."
"Consider it done. The dose is small, but over time, it will work. You shall get what you want.
Mark's breath caught. This was it. The smoking gun he had been looking for. The slow, methodical poisoning of Victoria, orchestrated by Daniella, was real. He had all the pieces, yet knew he had to move with trepidation. One wrong move and Daniella could disappear into thin air, taking evidence with her.
He dialed Louis again on his phone. "Louis, I have it. The e-mails. The transactions. It's all there. Daniella has been behind this the whole time."
Louis's heart jolted in his chest as he listened. "What do we now do?"
"We'll need to take this to the authorities," Mark said. "But first, we need to get Victoria safe. If Daniella thinks we're onto her, she could escalate things."
Louis's jaw clamped over, the anger boiling inside. "I won't let her cause Victoria any more pain than she's already caused."
As Louis hung up, he stood by the window of Victoria's hospital room, staring out into the city lights. Storm clouds gathered and the battle against Daniella was only just about to begin, but now, with the truth on his side, he knew what had to be done.
She had crossed a line, a line that could never be uncrossed. And Louis was ready to do whatever it took to stop her.
