Barry’s plot begins
Victoria's heels clicked rapidly on the pavement as she hurried through the dimly lit park. Her watch read 9:15 PM. 'Damn it," she muttered, quickening her pace.
The old coffee shop came into view, a warm glow spilling from its windows. Through the glass, she spotted a familiar figure hunched over a table. Her heart skipped a beat.
Taking a deep breath, Victoria pushed open the door. The bell jingled, announcing her arrival.
Barry's head snapped up, his eyes lighting up when he saw her. 'Vicky! I was starting to think you wouldn't show."
'It's Victoria now," she corrected automatically, sliding into the seat across from him. 'And sorry I'm late. Family dinner ran long."
Barry's brow furrowed. 'Family dinner? On a weeknight? That's new."
Victoria hesitated, then sighed. 'A lot's new, Barry. That's… kind of why I agreed to meet you."
The waiter approached, and Victoria ordered a strong black coffee. She needed the caffeine to get through this conversation.
'So," Barry leaned forward, his voice soft. 'What's going on, Vic- Victoria? You sounded pretty shaken up on the phone."
Victoria's fingers drummed nervously on the table. 'God, where do I even start? It's like my whole life's been turned upside down in a matter of days."
'Hey," Barry reached out, covering her hand with his. 'It's me. You can tell me anything."
The touch sent a jolt through Victoria. She pulled her hand away, ignoring the hurt look in Barry's eyes.
'I'm getting married," she blurted out.
Barry blinked, shock evident on his face. 'Married? But… I didn't even know you were seeing anyone."
'I'm not," Victoria laughed bitterly. 'That's the kicker. It's an arranged marriage. Can you believe it? In this day and age?"
'What?" Barry's voice rose, drawing looks from nearby tables. He lowered it quickly. 'Victoria, that's insane. Who's making you do this?"
Victoria's coffee arrived. She took a long sip, savoring the bitter taste. 'My parents. And his. It's all about business and family alliances. God, I sound like I'm in some historical drama."
'Who's the guy?" Barry asked, his jaw clenched.
'Louis Sebastian."
Barry's eyes widened. 'The billionaire? Jesus, Vic. That's… quite a catch."
Victoria's temper flared. 'A catch? Barry, I'm being forced to marry a man I can't stand! A rude, arrogant jerk who treats everyone like they're beneath him."
'Okay, okay," Barry held up his hands. 'I'm sorry. That was insensitive. But surely there's a way out of this?"
Victoria shook her head, tears pricking her eyes. 'I've tried. But if I back out, my family loses everything. The Sebastians would ruin us."
Barry's expression softened. He reached out again, and this time Victoria didn't pull away. 'Oh, Vicky. I'm so sorry. This isn't fair to you."
'Life's not fair," Victoria mumbled, wiping her eyes. 'God, listen to me. I sound pathetic."
'No," Barry said firmly. 'You sound like someone who's been put in an impossible situation. But you're strong, Vic. You always have been. You'll find a way through this."
Victoria looked up, meeting Barry's warm gaze. For a moment, she was transported back in time. Back to lazy Sunday mornings and stolen kisses between classes. Back when things were simpler.
'I've missed you," she whispered before she could stop herself.
Something flickered in Barry's eyes. He leaned forward, his voice low. 'I've missed you too. More than you know."
The air between them crackled with tension. Victoria's heart raced. This was dangerous territory.
'Barry," she started, but he cut her off.
'I know, I know. It's complicated. But Vic, seeing you again… it's bringing back all these feelings. Tell me you don't feel it too."
Victoria swallowed hard. 'Barry, I-'
Before she could finish, Barry closed the distance between them. His lips met hers, soft and familiar. For a moment, Victoria melted into the kiss.
Then reality crashed in. She jerked away, standing up so quickly her chair scraped loudly against the floor.
'I can't do this," she gasped. 'I'm sorry, Barry. This was a mistake."
'Victoria, wait!" Barry called, but she was already halfway to the door.
She burst out onto the street, gulping in the cool night air. Her mind spun. What had she been thinking?
As she hurried away from the coffee shop, her phone buzzed. A text from Louis: 'Where are you? We need to talk. Now."
Victoria's stomach dropped. How much worse could this night get?
Unknowing to her, a figure stepped out of the shadows across the street. Amaya lowered her camera, a satisfied smirk on her face.
'Oh, Victoria," she murmured. 'You just made this too easy."
As Victoria hailed a cab, her mind racing with thoughts of Barry's kiss and Louis's cryptic text, she failed to notice the black SUV that pulled away from the curb, following close behind.
The game was changing, and Victoria was caught in the middle of a dangerous web she didn't even know existed.
