Tension Revealed
Victoria had just entered the house when she felt the heavy tension in the air. It was too quiet, and in the living room, she saw Louis sitting on the couch, his hands tightly clasped. His eyes were dark, and his jaw was tight, showing that something was wrong.
She slowly put down her purse, her heart racing. "Louis?" she asked carefully, wanting to know what was wrong. "What's happening?"
He didn't look at her right away, tapping his knee as if trying to control his feelings. When he finally met her eyes, his voice was low but tense. "I heard you had dinner with Alex tonight."
Victoria's heart sank. She had meant to tell Louis about the dinner herself. "It was just business, Louis," she quickly said, trying to stay calm. "We just discussed his proposal."
Louis suddenly stood up and started pacing the room. "Just business? Then why didn't you tell me? Why did I have to hear it from someone else?"
Victoria was taken aback. "How did you even hear-?"
"Does it matter how I found out?" Louis interrupted, his frustration showing. "You didn't tell me because you knew how it would look. You didn't tell me because you knew there was more to it than just business."
Victoria felt her frustration rise. "That's not fair, Louis. I didn't tell you because I knew you'd react this way. I knew you'd be jealous, even if there was nothing to be jealous of."
"Jealous?" Louis replied, turning to face her with a mix of anger and hurt. "Of course I'm jealous! I saw how you were with him at the café. It wasn't just business then, and it isn't now, is it?"
Victoria stepped back, her heart racing. "You're overthinking this. Alex and I are just old friends. He offered me a business chance, and I'm thinking about it."
"But it's not just about business, is it?" Louis's voice softened. "You've been distant, ever since he came back into your life. It feels like you're pulling away from me, and I don't know why."
Victoria crossed her arms, guilt rising inside her. She didn't mean for things to get complicated, but now she couldn't avoid the truth.
"I haven't been pulling away," she said, but it felt untrue.
Louis stepped closer, his voice shaky. "Yes, you have. We used to be a team. Now it feels like we're fighting alone. I'm trying to hold everything together-our family, the company-and you're..."
"I'm what?" Victoria snapped. "I'm trying to survive! I've been through a lot, and I'm under a lot of pressure. Do you think I'm pulling away? Maybe I am, but it's not because of Alex. It's because I feel trapped!"
Louis's expression softened, but the hurt remained. "You're not trapped because of me, Victoria. You're pushing me away because you don't trust me. You don't think I can help you."
"Help me?" Victoria laughed bitterly. "You're trying to control everything. Every time I try to do something on my own, you're there trying to fix things. I don't need fixing, Louis. I need space."
Louis's hands dropped to his sides. "I'm trying to protect you because I'm scared. I almost lost you. Do you know how that feels?"
Victoria's anger faded as she heard his pain. "I know you're scared. I'm scared too. But the way you've been acting is making me feel weak like I can't handle my own life."
Louis shook his head, his voice breaking. "That's not what I want. I just don't want to lose you. But the more I try to hold on, the more you seem to drift away."
They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of their issues hanging between them.
Victoria looked away, feeling guilty. "I didn't mean to make you feel like you're not enough."
"But I'm not, am I?" Louis asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "Not when Alex is around."
Victoria felt her heartache. She hadn't meant for Louis to feel this way, but Alex reminded her of things she had lost-her control, her strength. With Alex, she felt like the person she used to be before everything went wrong.
"I love you, Louis," she said, her voice trembling. "But I don't know if love is enough anymore. I don't know if we are enough anymore."
Louis stepped back, shocked. "What are you saying?"
"I don't know," Victoria admitted, her voice breaking. "I just... I don't know if we can go back to how we were. We've both changed."
Louis stood there, trying to understand what she meant. The silence felt long and heavy.
Finally, Louis nodded. "You're right. We have changed. But that doesn't mean we can't make this work. I still believe in us, Victoria.
But I can't do it alone."
Tears welled in Victoria's eyes. "I don't want to lose you, Louis. But I can't keep pretending everything is okay when it's not."
Louis's eyes softened as he reached for her hand. "Then let's be honest. I don't care about Alex or anyone else. I just care about you."
Victoria looked down at their hands, feeling the weight of the decision she had to make. They couldn't keep fighting each other and holding on to a love that was fading.
But even as she held Louis's hand, she remembered Alex's touch, reminding her of what she had lost.
"I need time, Louis," she whispered. "I need time to figure out what I want."
Louis nodded, his face showing pain but also understanding. "Take all the time you need. Just don't give up on us."
As Victoria watched him walk away, she felt the weight of her choice heavier than ever. She was at a crossroads, torn between the man she loved and the woman she wanted to be.
And she wasn't sure which way to go.
