Difficult Demands
Louis was in his office, feeling more stressed as time passed. He hadn't heard from Victoria since their fight that morning, and the quiet was heavy. Each moment alone made him doubt if they could fix things. He was overwhelmed by Jane's news, the shock of being a father, and how it was affecting his marriage.
Just when he thought he was starting to cope, another problem appeared.
His phone buzzed, and he felt a pit in his stomach when he saw it was Jane. He paused, knowing he couldn't avoid talking to her any longer. Taking a deep breath, he answered the call.
"Jane," he said, his voice tense.
"Louis," she replied quickly. "We need to talk. I didn't want to bring this up right away, but we have to address it."
Louis leaned back in his chair, feeling uneasy. "What is it?"
After a brief pause, Jane's voice was firmer. "I have been raising our daughter alone for ten years. Now that you know about her, I think you should help with money. She deserves to be recognized as your child, both financially and in your life."
Louis tightened his hold on the phone, feeling a knot in his chest. "I want to be part of her life," he said. "But this is all happening so fast. I need time to figure this out."
"Time?" Jane scoffed. "I've been doing this alone for a decade. I've kept this from you because I thought it was best. But now that you know, you have a duty to help. She's your daughter, and it's time for you to step up."
Louis felt more pressure. He was just starting to understand he had a daughter, and now Jane wanted him to provide financial support and recognition. He was okay with showing he was her father, but the timing was overwhelming. His life was already a mess, and this added pressure was hard to handle.
"Jane," he tried to keep calm, "I'm not saying I won't help. But I need to talk to Victoria about this. I need to figure out how to manage everything."
"Manage everything?" Jane's tone became sharper. "You don't have time to figure things out. I've been patient for too long. This is about our daughter. She deserves more than silence. She needs to know you care and will take responsibility."
Louis felt guilty, knowing Jane had a point. But the pressure was too much. He was struggling to balance being a father and dealing with his shaky marriage. Everything felt out of control.
"I understand," Louis said, his voice strained. "But please, give me a little time. I want to do the right thing for her, but I need to be cautious. My relationship with Victoria is already fragile, and this complicates everything."
There was a long pause before Jane sighed, her tone softening a bit. "I know it's hard for you. But if I have to take legal action for support, I will. I have to think about her future."
Louis's heart sank. The idea of a legal battle, especially involving Victoria, terrified him. He realized things could get much worse if Jane went that route.
"Please don't do that," Louis said quickly, desperation in his voice. "I'll handle it. I just need time to figure out how to manage this without causing more problems. Please, Jane."
After a pause, Jane replied coolly, "Fine. But I won't wait forever. You need to make this right."
When the call ended, Louis let out a shaky breath, feeling overwhelmed by Jane's demands. Financial support. Recognition. Legal action if he didn't act quickly. He didn't know how to balance it all, and telling Victoria about this new layer of problems scared him even more. She was already struggling with the news of his daughter, and now this?
His phone buzzed again, and he hoped it was Victoria. But it was just an email from his financial advisor. He opened it, and the reality of Jane's demands hit him hard. Support payments, legal fees, potential custody issues-it all added up, and he didn't know how to handle it.
For the first time in a long time, Louis felt truly helpless.
Later, when Louis got home, Victoria was in the living room, looking tense and upset. She looked up when he entered, and the anger in her eyes told him she knew something was wrong.
"We need to talk," Victoria said firmly.
Louis nodded and sat down across from her, knowing what was coming.
"Jane called me," Victoria said coldly. "She told me everything. About the money, her demands, and the threat of legal action if you don't comply."
Louis closed his eyes, feeling the weight of the situation. "Victoria, I-"
"You didn't think this was important enough to tell me?" Victoria's voice rose, full of hurt. "You're in a tight spot, and you didn't even come to me first? This affects us."
"I know," Louis said, his voice breaking. "I was trying to figure it out without making things worse for us. I didn't want to add more stress for you."
"You didn't want to tell me the truth," Victoria interrupted sharply. "And now I find out from Jane that you're facing a legal battle over a child I didn't even know about until yesterday."
Louis stood up, running a hand through his hair, trying to think. "Victoria, I want to do the right thing. I want to take responsibility for my daughter, but I also want to protect us. I just... I don't know how to do both."
Victoria stared at him, breathing heavily. "I don't know how we can move forward, Louis. Every time I think we've hit a limit, something else happens. And now Jane is threatening legal action... this isn't just about our marriage anymore. It's about your past affecting us, and I don't know if I can handle that."
Louis felt his heartbreak at her words. He wanted to fix this, but the more he tried, the worse it seemed to get.
"I love you, Victoria," he whispered, desperate. "I don't want to lose you."
Victoria looked away, her eyes filled with pain and uncertainty. "I don't know if love is enough anymore, Louis."
As silence filled the room, both of them felt the weight of their choices. Louis sensed their relationship slipping away, and for the first time, he feared it might be too late to save it.
