The Weight of Sacrifice
The cool morning light came through the curtains at the Sebastian estate, making long shadows in the quiet living room. Louis sat at the kitchen table, looking at the resignation letter he had just signed, feeling unsure. He had always thought of himself as the strong one in the family, the one who kept everything together. But now, with Victoria's health getting worse, he knew he had to stop pretending.
He needed to be there for her completely, not trying to manage Sebastian Industries while also staying up all night with her. This decision was hard, but he knew it had to be made. Victoria needed him. Her health was the top priority, no matter the cost.
Louis called his assistant, Claire, who answered right away.
"Claire, it's Louis. I need you to take care of the office for a while. I'm taking an indefinite leave."
There was a pause on the line, and Louis could sense Claire's concern. "I understand, sir," Claire finally said. "We'll manage, but are you sure about this?"
Louis sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I don't have a choice. Victoria needs me now. I'll keep in touch, but I won't be back for a while."
"Of course," Claire replied. "I'll keep things running. Just let me know if you need anything."
After hanging up, Louis sat in the quiet room, feeling the weight of his decision. He knew that managing a big company like Sebastian Industries came with serious responsibilities, but for now, those responsibilities had to wait.
But he couldn't shake the worries. Taking time off meant giving up control, leaving the company with others, and adding stress to an already shaky financial situation. The business had been struggling since the media scandal started. With Victoria's reputation damaged and the family under constant scrutiny, keeping things stable was hard.
Now, without him leading, things might get worse.
Later that afternoon, Louis went back to the hospital, where Victoria was resting after more tests. She looked weak, her once lively spirit dimmed by constant sickness and stress. Her eyes opened as Louis sat next to her, and his heart ached seeing her so vulnerable.
"Hey," he said softly, brushing hair away from her face. "How are you feeling?"
Victoria managed a weak smile, but it seemed to tire her out. "Tired. But I'm trying to stay positive."
Louis nodded, trying to keep calm. "I talked to the office today. I've decided to take some time off... to be with you."
Victoria's eyes widened in surprise. "Louis, you don't have to do that. You're already so busy with work. The company needs you."
He shook his head, holding her hand. "The company will be fine. Right now, you're my main focus. I can't keep pretending I can do it all. You need me here, and that's where I want to be."
Tears filled Victoria's eyes as she looked at him, feeling both grateful and guilty. She knew how much he cared about his work and what he had given up for their future. And now, because of her, he was stepping away from it all.
"But what about the business?" she asked quietly. "What if something happens while you're gone?"
Louis squeezed her hand gently. "We'll figure it out. Claire is in charge for now, and I'll stay in touch. But you are what matters most to me, Victoria. The company can survive without me for a while, but I can't risk losing you."
Tears rolled down Victoria's face as she turned away, trying to hide her emotions. The weight of everything-her illness, the media scandal, and the pressure she felt from Louis's sacrifice-was too much for her.
"I'm so sorry," she whispered, her voice shaky. "I never wanted to make you choose like this."
Louis's heart ached at her words, and he gently turned her face back to him. "You are not a burden," he said firmly. "You are my wife, and I will do whatever it takes to help you get better. Don't ever apologize for that."
Victoria closed her eyes, overwhelmed by the love and support Louis offered, even as their world seemed to be falling apart.
But the reality of their situation started to hit hard over the next few weeks. Louis's choice to take time off had serious effects, both financially and emotionally. The company's stock dropped, and rumors spread that the Sebastian family was in worse trouble than anyone thought. Investors became nervous, and the media kept stirring things up.
Financially, they were struggling. Medical bills were piling up as Victoria's health problems continued without a clear answer.
Experts were being brought in from all over, and while Louis was willing to spend money, it was getting harder to keep the company's finances stable while paying for her treatment.
Emotionally, the stress was showing. Louis tried to stay strong, but being a caretaker and head of the family was tough. He spent every day at Victoria's side, feeling helpless as she fought her illness while worrying about the company's future, its financial troubles, and Daniella's constant interference.
One evening, as they sat together in the quiet hospital room, Victoria broke the silence. "Louis, I hate that this is happening. You've given up so much for me. What if things don't get better?"
Louis felt a tightness in his chest at her words. He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against hers. "We'll get through this," he said, though his tired voice showed his doubts. "No matter how hard it gets, I'm not going anywhere. We'll face it together."
Victoria's tears fell silently, her fear of the unknown overwhelming her. She wanted to trust him, wanted to believe in the strength he offered, but the cracks in their stability were growing, and the pressure on both was becoming too much.
Days turned into weeks, and the strain only grew. Louis struggled to care for Victoria while trying to manage the company from a distance. He had more sleepless nights, and the financial stress was hard to ignore.
But more than that, the emotional gap between them widened. Victoria felt like a shadow of her former self, weighed down by guilt for taking Louis away from their life. And Louis, despite his love and commitment, was starting to feel overwhelmed by it all.
They were fighting to survive, but the cost was more than they had expected.
