Creeping Doubt
Victoria sat at her desk, her eyes drifting over the various reports and documents scattered in front of her. An hour had gone by, and she had been trying to focus on work, but her mind kept wandering back to her meeting with Alex. How easily they'd fallen back into the conversation, the way he'd looked at her with such genuine admiration, was making her feel something she hadn't in a very long time appreciated.
There was something in Alex's voice that she simply couldn't turn away from, a reminder of who she was before the weight of the Sebastian empire, the lawsuit, and the poisoning had brought her down. With Alex, it was almost as though she remained the same woman he knew back in law school: ambitious, fearless Victoria who would take up each challenge that came her way.
Now, as she sat and stared blankly at her computer screen, doubt began to stir within Victoria. She loved Louis, no question, but things had become complicated between them. Every conversation seemed to end in an argument or some emotional standoff.
Louis was always there, always ready to protect her, but his protectiveness felt like a cage, holding her in rather than supporting her.
But it was different with Alex. He respected her intelligence and independence. He didn't try to shelter her from the storm-he wanted her in the middle of it, leading the charge. And after so many months of being weakened by illness and guilt and the relentless pressure of the lawsuit, that respect was intoxicating.
A gentle knock at the door broke her from her reverie. Sarah stepped in, holding a folder in her hands. "You got a meeting with the legal team in twenty minutes. I thought I'd bring these over for you to review beforehand."
"Thanks, Sarah," Victoria replied, the sound of her voice distracted as she took the folder.
Sarah hovered for a moment, feeling the switch in Victoria's mood. "Is everything okay? You seem... off today."
Victoria looked up, offering a tight smile. "Just a lot on my mind."
Sarah nodded and then continued after a beat, "You know if you ever need to talk about anything or otherwise here.
The gesture was appreciated by Victoria, but she was not quite sure how to explain it. How could she admit that she had been beginning to question her commitment to Louis, the man who had stood by her side through everything? How could she justify this temptation inside to explore something, even if only on a professional level?
"I'm fine, really," Victoria said, a little more to assure herself than Sarah. "Just trying to balance everything."
Sarah smiled a little and left the room, shutting the door quietly behind her. The moment she was alone again, Victoria's mind betrayed her and returned to Alex. She could hear his voice in her head, subtle hints at the connection they'd had, the way he'd looked at her like she still was the same unstoppable force he admired so long ago.
The fact was, she had not felt like that woman for a very long time. With the poisoning, the constant scrutiny, and the relentless pressure of the court, the confidence was chipped away. Louis had tried to be supportive, but too often his methods left her stifled-like she was fragile, something to be handled with care. He had always been trying to fix things, trying to be in control of the situation, and by so doing, he had unconsciously rendered her powerless.
With Alex, there was no expectation for her to be weak or in need of saving. He came into her life offering more than a business opportunity; he offered the chance to reclaim her autonomy, and that was tempting, dangerously so.
As days went by, Victoria felt herself drifting away from Louis. The conversations were brief, the interactions a bit more formal.
Louis noticed the shift, of course. He had always been one to tell when something was bothering her, but any time he ever tried to have a talk with her about it, Victoria would deflect and say that she was stressed or too overwhelmed with work.
But in reality, it wasn't just the stress. It was this growing feeling in her heart that she and Louis were no longer on the same page.
Once partners, equals, pushing each other on to be better, to be stronger. Now, all they seemed to do was pull each other in different directions. Louis wanted to protect her; Victoria wanted to reclaim the strength that she lost.
She hated herself for thinking it, but the thought crept in: Was she better off with someone like Alex?
That night, after another fight with Louis over the lawsuit and the poisoning investigation, Victoria found herself scrolling through old photos on her phone. Photos of her and Alex during their law school days-smiling, laughing, carefree. She recalled how he had looked at her then-as if she could take on the world and win. It had been exciting and invigorating. Now, all she felt was the weight of expectations and the constant fear of failure.
She put her phone down and stared at the ceiling; her mind was racing. All the doubts she had been pushing down for so long were finally rising to the surface. Was this what her life became? One battle after another, with no end in sight? And within it all, had she lost herself along the way?
The next morning, while getting ready for yet another excruciating day of meetings and legal briefings, Victoria got a text from Alex:
"You up for another coffee? I have some more ideas I'd love to run by you."
Victoria stared at the message, heart pounding in her chest. She knew that meeting him again would bring along risks it would pose to her relationship with Louis. But at the same time, the idea of seeing Alex again feeling appreciated and respected in a way she hadn't felt in a long time was almost too tempting to resist.
She tapped out a quick reply: "Sure. Let's meet tomorrow."
The minute the message was sent, a wave of guilt overwhelmed her. But that feeling of guilt was followed quickly by another-excitements. For the first time in months, Victoria felt in control again. She wasn't just reacting to everything going on around her; she was making a choice. And that choice, for better or worse, was bringing her back to Alex.
Louis had always been there for her, and she knew he loved her deeply. But love wasn't always enough. Respect, admiration, and the ability to be seen for who she truly was counted on.
And right now, she wasn't so convinced Louis saw her the way Alex did.
