Old Flames, New Sparks
Victoria sat at the café table as the sun drifted in through the large windows, casting a soft glow on the small area. The soft hum of quiet conversations and the clinking of cups provided a comforting background as she waited for Alex. It was the first time in several days since they had been able to get together, and though Victoria had at first been hesitant to meet with him again, curiosity won out.
The door chimed as Alex walked in, drawing attention from a few patrons right away. He was dressed in a crisp navy suit; his confident stride and easy smile were as familiar as it was disarming. He spotted her in an instant, his eyes locking onto hers as he made his way over.
"Victoria," Alex said warmly, greeting her by bending to kiss her cheek and taking a seat opposite her. "You look radiant as always."
Victoria smiled, feeling a light blush rise to her cheeks despite herself. "Thanks, Alex. It's good to see you again."
Alex kicked back in his chair, his smile broadening. "It's good to see you too. I gotta say, I've missed our conversations. Law school was never the same once you opted to focus on corporate law rather than trial work. You were always just so. unstoppable."
Victoria laughed low, stirring memories of days in law school. "Those were simpler times. A lot has changed since then."
"True," Alex agreed, holding his gaze on her a second beyond what was proper. "But not everything. Some things have remained the same. Like how easy it is to talk to you."
There was a quiet warmth in his tone, an undercurrent of flirtation behind the words. Victoria shifted slightly in her seat, trying to pretend the butterflies that stirred in her stomach didn't exist. She hadn't come here for anything beyond business, but then Alex's charm had always found ways to seep right under her skin.
"I'll admit, it has been nice catching up," Victoria said very carefully, keeping the conversation on neutral ground. "But you mentioned you wanted to go over more of the details of your business proposal.
Alex's eyes sparkled, and he knew just what she was doing. "Of course, business." He leaned forward, setting his elbows on the table. "I didn't mean to get sidetracked. It's just that... seeing you again has brought back a lot of memories. Good ones."
Victoria's pulse quickened at the implication in his tone. She glanced down at the coffee in front of her and stirred the liquid inside her cup. "We had some good times," she allowed, keeping her voice light. "But that was a long time ago."
"Was it?" Alex asked, his voice low and even. "Sometimes it feels like yesterday. You and me, pulling all-nighters, sharing takeout, swapping legal theories. We made a pretty good team back then."
Victoria smiled despite herself, remembering those late nights when their passion for the law and, occasionally, for each other fueled them both forward. "We did," she agreed. "But things are different now."
"Not everything's different," Alex said, the timbre of his voice more suggestive this time. "I mean, here we are, back in the same room, still sparking off each other. The connection's still there, isn't it?"
Something-Victoria didn't know whether it was nostalgia, attraction, or only the weight of history-fluttered through her chest. But she made a conscious effort to ground herself. She was married to Louis, and despite the recent troubles, she was committed to their life together.
"I'm not sure it's the same kind of connection," Victoria said with careful tact, redirecting the conversation. "We've both changed a lot since then."
Alex let a low, husky laugh and relaxed again in his chair. "Perhaps. But occasionally change is a good thing. It allows us to see things from a new perspective. And if there is one thing I know, it is I have always admired you, Victoria. You remain the most brilliant woman I've ever had the pleasure of knowing."
There was more in his words than mere admiration; they were tinged with that unmistakable undertone of something more. Victoria wasn't blind to it, yet neither did she know precisely how to respond. Part of her enjoyed the attention, the easy charm Alex brought to the table. Another part, the one consciously trying to stay true to Louis- felt conflicted.
"Thank you, Alex," she said softly, but evenly. "I appreciate the compliment. But I'm married now. Things are... complicated."
Alex's expression didn't falter. He merely inclined his head, eyes still not leaving hers. "Complicated how? From what I've heard, things with Louis haven't exactly been smooth sailing lately."
Victoria froze for a second, taken aback by the seeming weight of Alex's knowledge. "It has been stressful of late, yes," she confirmed rather carefully. "But then again, that is what life has been a part of it all. Every relationship has had its share of ups and downs."
"Of course," Alex said smoothly. "But sometimes... people grow apart. It happens. And if you ever need someone to talk to someone who knows you, really knows you-I'm here. No pressure, just... an offer."
Victoria's heart skipped a beat at the subtle implication. Alex wasn't being overtly forward, but the message was clear enough. He was interested in more than just business.
She breathed in hard, clearing her head. This wasn't the time to get caught up in old feelings or flirtations. Business was what she was here for, and business needed to be the focus.
"I appreciate that, Alex," Victoria replied after a moment, tone even. "But right now, my priority is to get through this lawsuit and the mess that's come along with it. Your offer is intriguing, and I'd love to explore it further on a professional level."
Alex smiled, very aware of the line she was drawing in the sand and refusing to step back from it entirely. "Understood. But just so you know, I'm always open to reconnecting. On any level."
Victoria met his gaze, her mind a jumble of conflicting feelings inside. Part of her was drawn to the ease of their old connection, the feeling that Alex made her feel less like she was suffocating under the weight of her responsibilities. Yet another part of her knew this was dangerous, especially now, when so much in her life and marriage hung in the balance.
"Let's just do business in the meantime," she said, firm but friendly. "There's enough chaos in my life as it is."
Alex nodded, smiling never leaving his face. "Fair enough. But the offer still stands."
The details of his proposal were next, and she couldn't help but feel the underpinning of tension that lay between them-mostly unspoken, yet there nonetheless. Alex's presence simply stirred up old feelings, memories of a time when things had been simpler when she hadn't been pulled in a hundred different directions.
Yet as the meeting drew to a close and Alex stood to leave, Victoria knew she had to keep her guard up. The past was just that-the past. And no matter how much Alex flirted or how easy it felt to talk to him, her future was still with Louis.
At least, that was the story she continued to tell herself as she watched Alex disappear into the distance; the charming smile he'd given her stayed in her head a little longer than she cared to admit.
