A Familiar Comfort
Victoria was in her hospital bed, thinking about her talk with Alex Hart. His return had surprised her and reminded her of happier times-before all the legal issues, betrayals, and personal problems in her life. Alex had always been charming and persuasive, and his proposal had given her a glimmer of hope, a chance to escape her struggles.
She hadn't felt that way in a long time.
Her phone buzzed with a text from Alex: "I hope I didn't overstep earlier. Just wanted you to know you've got options. Let's catch up when you're ready."
Victoria looked at the message, her finger hovering over the keyboard. She wanted to reply right away and enjoy their easy connection. With Alex, there were no heavy expectations or constant tension. He didn't look at her with worry like Louis did these days.
But Louis...
Victoria glanced at the door, expecting him to come back in, always serious and protective. Their relationship had always been passionate, but lately, it felt intense in a negative way. The stress from the lawsuit, her illness, and her family problems had created a distance between them. Even though Louis tried to support her, their talks often ended in arguments or him asking her to rest.
It was tiring.
Alex, however, had returned to her life as if nothing had changed. Their conversation felt easy, like old times. He hadn't pressured her or doubted her. He had offered her a chance to take back control.
Victoria sighed and quickly typed a reply: "Thanks, Alex. Let's catch up soon."
His response came right away: "Looking forward to it."
She smiled briefly, but it faded as she remembered Louis's earlier reaction. He had shown his jealousy, and she felt the tension rise when he saw her talking to Alex.
Louis was protective of Victoria, especially since her illness. She understood he was scared of losing her, but his constant worry felt overwhelming. The more he tried to control things, the more she felt like she was losing herself.
With Alex, things were different. There was no pressure, just possibilities.
The next morning, Sarah walked in, her organized nature calming Victoria amidst the chaos. She brought some papers and coffee for Victoria.
"Good morning," Sarah said, placing the coffee down. "I've got updates on the legal issues, but nothing urgent. How are you feeling?"
Victoria smiled and took a sip of coffee. "Better, I think. The doctors said I'm stable for now, but who knows how long that will last."
Sarah nodded, looking thoughtful. "That's good news. I've been managing things at the office, and Louis has been handling important meetings. But if you're up for it, there's a document that needs your signature."
Victoria set her coffee down, momentarily distracted by the papers Sarah brought. She wanted to stay involved in the business, but every day she felt more disconnected. With her health uncertain, it was hard to manage everything, and that scared her.
"Sarah, have you ever thought about leaving everything behind? Starting fresh?" Victoria asked, almost absentmindedly.
Sarah looked surprised. "Leaving everything behind? No, not really. I love working for you. But I guess everyone thinks about it sometimes. Why do you ask?"
Victoria traced the rim of her coffee cup. "I got an offer yesterday. From Alex Hart. He's starting a new business in legal tech and wants me to join him. It's tempting, especially with all that's happening."
Sarah raised her eyebrows, intrigued. "Alex Hart? I've heard of him-he has a good reputation. That sounds like a great opportunity. But... are you thinking of leaving Sebastian Industries?"
Victoria hesitated, looking out the window. "I don't know. Part of me feels like I can't just walk away. But another part of me... I'm exhausted. I've been fighting for so long, and now with everything-the poisoning, the lawsuit, the family drama-I feel crushed."
Sarah studied her carefully. "You've built something amazing, Victoria. But you can take a step back, even just to recover. You have the right to think about your options."
Victoria felt her chest tighten, caught between the idea of escaping with Alex's offer and the reality of staying to fight through the chaos. She wasn't sure what scared her more-losing control or the possibility of never regaining it.
"I just don't know if I can handle everything anymore," Victoria said softly. "Louis is trying his best, but it feels like we're always at odds now. I know he cares, but sometimes it feels like I'm just a burden."
Sarah's expression softened. "Louis loves you, Victoria. But love doesn't always make things easy. Maybe he's feeling the pressure too, trying to manage everything while watching you struggle."
Victoria nodded, thinking about the tension between her and Louis. Their relationship had always been passionate, but lately, it felt like they were on different paths. Louis wanted to protect her, but Victoria needed something different-something that didn't involve being shielded from the storm.
Alex's offer had come at a time when she was desperate for clarity, for a way forward that didn't involve constant fighting. With Alex, there were no messy issues and no heavy expectations. He saw her as she once was-strong and ambitious.
But was that enough to make her leave everything she had built with Louis?
"Thanks, Sarah," Victoria said, giving her assistant a small smile. "I'll think about it. For now, I need to focus on getting through the day."
Sarah nodded, collecting the documents and offering a supportive smile. "Of course. Whatever you decide, we'll make it work."
As Sarah left, Victoria's phone buzzed again-another text from Alex: "When you're ready, I've got more details about the offer. Let's meet for coffee when you can."
Victoria stared at the message, torn between the comfort of reconnecting with Alex and the complicated relationship she had with Louis. The thought of stepping away from her troubles and taking Alex's offer lingered in her mind.
She quickly replied: "Let's meet soon."
As she sent the message, Victoria felt pulled between two worlds-one with the promise of something new and the other tied to the life she fought so hard to protect.
She knew she would have to choose.
