A Shadow Returns
Victoria awoke in the dead of night, her body lathered with sweat. The room spun before her; the dark silhouettes of furniture blended, as her eyes attempted to concentrate laboriously. Her head throbbed in anguish, while her stomach churned up with nausea. She had not felt right for a few days, but tonight was completely different. Worse-much worse.
Panting, she reached for the glass of water that lay beside her on the nightstand and attempted to raise it to her lips. Her hand juddered uncontrollably, and the cool water did little to soothe her body. She put the glass down again and tried to regulate her breathing, but her heart was racing, her body betraying her with each passing second.
Louis stirred beside her, his brow furrowed as he sensed her distress. "Victoria?" he murmured sleepily reaching for her. "Are you okay?"
Victoria tried to speak, but her throat tightened and a sharp pang pierced her chest. Her line of vision blurred and she felt as though she might faint at any moment. Panic surged through her as the fear she had managed to push aside for so long began to resurface.
Something was wrong.
Louis bolted upright in bed, now awake, considering the state she was in. "Victoria!" His voice was laced with alarm as he clasped her hand, eyes wide with fear. "What's happening? Talk to me."
"I-," Victoria gasped, her breathing shallow. "I don't know. Something's... wrong. I feel... I can't breathe, Louis."
Her words sent him terror-stricken. Without wasting a second, Louis sprang out of bed, reached for his phone, and dialed an ambulance service. His hands shook as he relayed their location; his voice was thick with worry.
As he hung up the phone, he crouched beside her, his hand cradling her face. "Hold on, Victoria. The paramedics are on their way. Just breathe, okay? Just breathe."
But to breathe was impossible. Each breath was fire, and her chest was constricted, as though crushed with a vice. Her body quaked with sobs; cold sweats drenched her skin. She saw in Louis's eyes the fear that was building in her own. She'd been to this place once before, and speculation of poisoning was on everyone's lips.
What if it was happening all over again?
The hospital room was cold and sterile; the only sound was the quiet hum of the machines as Victoria lay in the bed, her body hooked up to IVs and monitors. The doctors had managed to get her stable for now, but that one question exactly had brought her into this sudden decline weighed heavily in the air.
Louis sat beside her, his hand clamped tightly on hers. His face was pale with worry, his eyes dark with exhaustion. They'd been here too many times before-too many health scares and too many unanswered questions. But this time felt different. This time, Victoria's symptoms had come on so suddenly, so violently, it was impossible to keep from fearing that something more sinister was at play.
"She's stable for now," said Dr. Patel, the attending physician, standing at the foot of the bed reviewing her chart. "But certainly very concerning symptoms-especially given her history. More tests will be needed to understand what's going on."
Louis looked up at the doctor with tightened jaws. "Could this be... poisoning? Like before?"
Dr. Patel hedged, his eyes scanning the monitors before he met Louis's gaze. "It's too early to say for certain, but it's a possibility. We're going to run a full toxicology screening to rule it out, but given her experience, it's something we need to take seriously."
Louis's heart sank as the weight of those words from the doctor settled over him like a shroud. Poisoning. It had been the nightmare they'd hoped they were leaving behind, yet here it was, insidious in their lives again.
He turned to Victoria, who lay motionless, her face ashen, haggard. She had been through so much already: media scandals, Daniella's pressure, and now this. How much more would she be able to take?
As Dr. Patel walked out of the room, Louis bent over to Victoria's bedside in a hushed tone and a thread of desperation. "I'm going to find out who's behind this," he murmured low. "I swear to you, I'll stop whoever is doing this to you."
Victoria began to stir a little, her eyelids fluttering with attempts to open them. Her voice came soft, barely more than a whisper.
"Louis. What if. Is it happening again?"
Louis's chest constricted as he fought to dam the wave of fear rising in his chest. "Don't think like that. We're going to figure this out. You're going to be okay."
But even as he spoke the words, Louis knew the seriousness of the situation. If someone was poisoning her again, they had stepped up their attack. And that meant the danger was far from over.
Back at the Sebastian estate, Louis sat in his study, his mind reeling with questions. The house was eerily still, his thoughts spiraling as he worked to make sense of it all. Who could want to harm Victoria? Daniella orchestrated those leaks and is trying to take down Victoria's reputation, but would she go this far?
As that thought crossed his mind, Louis felt a flush of anger rise within him. Daniella. Was this her doing too? She had already proven that nothing would stop her from taking Victoria down. If she was behind hiring someone to ruin Victoria's health, this stopped being a sibling rivalry; it was about life or death now.
Louis picked up his phone and dialed the number for their private investigator, Mark Caldwell. His voice was tight with urgency as he said, "Mark, it's Louis. I need you to dig deeper into Daniella's activities. There is a possibility she might not be the only one responsible for the leaks. Victoria's health is deteriorating again, and my suspicious mind tells me, someone is poisoning her."
Mark's voice was even over the phone. "I'll check into it immediately. If Daniella's behind it, we'll know it. But Louis, be careful. This could get dangerous."
Louis hung up, his heart racing. He knew they were running out of time. The legal battle with Daniella had just begun, and now they were faced with the terrifying possibility that Victoria's life was in danger.
He would spare nothing to protect her.
Later in the night, back at the hospital, Victoria's symptoms flared once more. Her pulse was racing, and her body shook with tremors as she drifted in and out of consciousness. The doctors were working frantically to stabilize her, but Louis could see the concern etched into their faces.
But the tests were still running, and poisoning speculation was in the air, dark.
And Louis sat by Victoria's side, holding her hand and watching her struggle, he made a vow. He would find out who did this to her.
Whether it was Daniella or someone else, he would get to the bottom of it.
For this time, more than ever, the stakes were higher. And Victoria's life was hanging in the balance.
