Shadows of Guilt
The church was packed with people quietly sharing their condolences while soft music played. A big picture of Malcolm, smiling confidently, was in the front, surrounded by white flowers. It was a lovely tribute, but for Victoria, it only made her feel more uneasy.
She stood at the back, tightly holding her hands and looking down as people came in to pay their respects. She had just been released from custody a few days ago because of the evidence Malcolm provided before he died. But instead of feeling free, she was overwhelmed with guilt. She was here because of Malcolm's brave act, and now he was gone, leaving his family behind.
Victoria looked around the room, seeing familiar faces—business partners, family friends, and others who had known Malcolm for a long time. She felt like an outsider, like she didn't belong. Everyone was mourning Malcolm and honoring him, but she felt responsible for the turmoil in his family.
Louis was at the front with Elizabeth and Daniella, visibly upset. He noticed Victoria and gave her a little nod, but his face was tight and hard to read. He had been supportive since she got out, but she worried he might secretly blame her for the mess their lives had become.
As the service started, Victoria sat in a pew at the back, her mind racing with memories of Malcolm. He had always been fair and committed to his family, fighting to protect her even when he was in danger himself. The weight of his sacrifice felt heavy on her.
The eulogies were heartfelt, sharing stories of Malcolm's successes and kindness. Elizabeth spoke first, her voice shaky as she talked about their life together and all their dreams. Many people in the room were in tears as she finished.
'Malcolm was my rock," Elizabeth said, looking around. 'He held us all together. Now, without him, everything feels off balance. But I know he wouldn't want us to fall apart. He'd want us to keep going, just like he always did."
Louis then spoke, his voice steady but emotional, sharing lessons from his father and the void his absence created. Daniella also shared her memories, her voice breaking as she expressed how much her dad meant to her.
Victoria felt overwhelmed with guilt and sorrow, feeling like an outsider in a family that had been torn apart. She couldn't shake the thought that, somehow, this was her fault.
As the service ended, people slowly left the church, the mood heavy with sadness. Victoria hesitated at the back, unsure if she should approach the family or slip away. She watched as mourners comforted Elizabeth, Louis, and Daniella, their words met with nods and tearful smiles.
Just as she turned to leave, Daniella called out, 'Victoria, wait."
Victoria froze, heart racing, and faced Daniella. The younger woman looked serious and sad as she walked over to her.
'Thank you for coming," Daniella said, her voice tense. There was something in her tone that made Victoria uneasy.
'I'm so sorry for your loss," Victoria replied, her voice shaky. 'Your father was an amazing man, and I owe him so much. If there's anything I can do…"
Daniella studied her carefully. 'Is that why you're here? To pay a debt?"
Victoria flinched at the question. 'No, I—" She paused, trying to find the right words. 'I'm here because I cared about Malcolm. He fought for me when no one else did. I wanted to honor him."
Daniella's expression softened a little. 'He believed in you, even when it was hard. But you need to know it's tough for us—hard for me—to move past everything that's happened."
Victoria nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. 'I get it. I don't expect forgiveness, and I know I can't fix things. I just wanted to be here to say goodbye."
Daniella looked at her closely, the tension between them clear. 'You're here because of him. Don't forget that."
Before Victoria could reply, Daniella walked away to rejoin her family. Victoria watched her go, feeling the weight of those words.
She knew Daniella was right—her freedom came at a cost because of Malcolm.
Louis came over next, his expression softer but still pained. He put his hands in his pockets, looking at Victoria. 'Thank you for coming," he said quietly, a mix of gratitude and sorrow in his voice.
'I wouldn't be anywhere else," Victoria whispered. 'I'm so sorry, Louis. For everything."
Louis nodded, searching her eyes. 'You don't need to apologize. None of this is your fault. My father made his choices. In the end, he did what he thought was right."
Victoria swallowed hard, tears finally falling. 'I wish I could have done more. I wish I could have saved him like he saved me."
Louis stepped closer, offering comfort. 'He wouldn't want you to feel guilty. He believed in you and wanted the truth to come out."
Victoria nodded, wiping her eyes. 'I'll never forget what he did for me. I'll spend my life trying to live up to that."
Louis took her hand gently. 'We all will. But for now, let's take it one day at a time."
They stood together in the fading light, the church bells ringing softly. For a moment, Victoria felt a sense of peace, knowing she wasn't alone in her grief. But as they parted, that peace faded, replaced by the guilt that wouldn't leave her.
As Victoria watched the Sebastian family come together, she felt Malcolm's absence more than ever. She had a second chance at life, but it came with a debt she could never repay. As she turned to leave, Daniella's words echoed in her mind, reminding her of the challenges ahead.
With every step, Victoria promised to honor Malcolm's memory and fight for the truth he had sacrificed for. But even as she walked away, she couldn't shake the feeling that she would always be looking for a way to make things right.
The future was unclear, but one thing was certain: Malcolm's legacy would live on in the choices that Victoria and the Sebastian family would make. And as she disappeared into the evening, she hoped that one day, they would all find the peace they were searching for.
