Jealousy?
Louis was in his office, looking at the bright city lights of New York, but he was not paying attention to them. He kept thinking about Victoria and Barry, how they had been chatting closely at the dinner party, smiling and whispering to each other. Barry was Victoria's ex, and seeing them together made Louis feel uneasy.
Louis usually didn't get jealous, or at least he thought he didn't. But Barry made him nervous. Maybe it was how comfortable Barry seemed with Victoria, or how he lingered in their talks like he wanted to win her back. No matter how hard Louis tried, he couldn't shake these feelings.
His phone buzzed and brought him back to reality. It was a message from Victoria: 'I'll be home late tonight. Don't wait up."
Louis's frustration grew. This was the third time this week she had sent a message like that after he saw her with Barry. He tossed the phone on his desk and stood up, feeling trapped in his office.
He grabbed his jacket and left, his mind racing. He needed to know what was happening between them. He wanted to talk to Victoria and break down the wall that seemed to be building between them.
When he got home, it was dark and quiet. Victoria wasn't there yet. He took off his tie and walked around the living room, confused. What had changed? They started their marriage with difficulties, but they found some understanding along the way. Now, that understanding was fading, and Louis felt like Barry was the reason.
Suddenly, the door opened and Victoria entered, looking tired but careful. She noticed Louis and asked, 'You're still up?"
Louis put down his drink, feeling the tension. 'Where were you?"
'At a meeting," she said, taking off her coat.
'A meeting," he repeated, sounding doubtful. 'With Barry?"
'Yes, with Barry. He's helping me, and that's none of your business," Victoria replied sharply.
Louis felt anger rise in him. 'It is my business when my wife is with her ex."
Victoria pushed past him. 'Don't start, Louis. This is silly."
'No, what's silly is you sneaking around with him!" Louis shouted. 'What's going on?"
Victoria stopped and faced him. 'Nothing is happening, Louis. Barry and I are just friends."
'Friends?" Louis scoffed. 'You expect me to believe that?"
'Yes, I do," Victoria replied, her voice firm. 'That's the truth. Can't you trust me?"
'Trust you?" Louis asked, surprised. 'How can I trust you when you're always with him? When do you keep things from me?"
Victoria's anger flared. 'You're the one hiding things, Louis. You disappear for hours, come home smelling like whiskey, and then question me?"
Louis stepped closer, the air thick with tension. 'At least I'm not getting close to an ex."
'Barry is helping me because you won't," she said, frustrated. 'You're too caught up in your world to see what's happening."
Louis's heart raced as he considered her words. He knew he had been distant, but it was because of his doubts that were now causing this fight.
'And what exactly is happening, Victoria?" he asked quietly. 'Because all I see is you pulling away. If Barry is the reason, we have a problem."
Victoria shook her head, looking tired. 'The problem isn't Barry, Louis. It's us. It's this situation we never wanted."
An uncomfortable silence filled the room. Louis looked into her eyes, searching for answers, but all he found was the same tiredness he felt.
Victoria broke the silence, her voice softer now. 'I don't know how we can fix this when we just hurt each other."
Louis felt guilty, but his pride stopped him from giving in. 'We have to find a way, Victoria. This is our life now."
Victoria laughed bitterly. 'And what if I don't want to? What if I'm tired of pretending everything is fine?"
Louis felt a wave of sadness at her words. They were both stuck in a life they hadn't chosen, and now it was falling apart.
Victoria sighed and walked past him to the stairs. 'I'm going to bed. We can talk about this in the morning."
'Victoria—" Louis began, but she didn't stop or look back.
As she went upstairs, Louis felt the weight of their failing marriage. He wanted to fix things, but he didn't know how. Anger, jealousy, and mistrust were taking over their lives.
Louis sank into a chair, staring at the space where Victoria had just stood. The silence in the house was loud, and each tick of the clock reminded him of the time they were losing together.
But as he sat there, the anger faded, replaced by fear. Fear that he was losing her, that whatever they had was slipping away.
He knew he needed to act, to confront Barry, and to understand what was happening. But more importantly, he needed to reach out to Victoria and break down the walls between them.
Louis's mind raced as he tried to come up with a plan, but he didn't know how to fix things. All he knew was that he couldn't lose her, not to Barry or anyone else.
The clock ticked on, each second reminding him how much time was passing. He had to act quickly before the distance between them became too great.
