The Best Defense
Louis stood by the big windows of his office, looking out at the city. Outside, life continued as if nothing was wrong, but inside, he was worried. Victoria was in a cold jail cell, accused of a murder she didn't do. Now, it was his job to help her.
'Mr. Sebastian, are you ready?" Claire called from the door, looking concerned. 'The lawyers are here."
Louis nodded, running his hand through his messy hair. 'Let them in," he said, feeling the pressure on him. He had to focus; Victoria needed him.
Claire opened the door, and three lawyers walked in, all dressed neatly. The leader was Charles Whitman, a well-known defense lawyer known for winning cases. Louis hoped he could prove Victoria's innocence.
'Mr. Sebastian," Whitman said, shaking Louis's hand. 'I wish it were under better circumstances."
'Thanks for coming so quickly," Louis said, inviting them to sit. He felt a bit hopeful; Whitman was the best.
'Let's get to it," Whitman said as he opened his briefcase and took out some papers. 'I've looked at the evidence against Victoria, and it's not good. They have her fingerprints on the murder weapon, financial records that suggest a motive, and witnesses who say they saw her with Barry Joe before he died."
Louis felt angry. 'She didn't do it. Someone is trying to frame her, and I think Amaya is behind this."
Whitman leaned back, tapping his pen. 'We'll look at everything, but we have a tough fight ahead. The other side will push hard and try to make Victoria look bad."
Louis clenched his fists, thinking about Victoria in handcuffs. He wouldn't let her face this alone.
'What's our plan?" Louis asked firmly. 'How do we get her out?"
Whitman looked at his team, then back at Louis. 'First, we need to challenge the evidence. The fingerprints are too easy to find.
We'll look for any mistakes and see if someone else tampered with them. For the financial records, we need to find out who had access to her accounts."
Louis nodded, feeling more determined. 'What about the witnesses?"
Whitman shrugged a little. 'Witnesses can be wrong. If we can show they were confused or pressured, we can weaken their claims. But we need solid proof to change things in our favor."
Louis leaned forward, focused. 'Amaya was there the night Barry was shot. She has reasons to want Victoria out of the way. If we can link her to the murder…"
Whitman raised his hand. 'We need proof, not just suspicion. But if Amaya is involved, we'll find it. I'll assign my best investigators to look into it. For now, we need to focus on showing that the prosecution's case isn't strong."
Louis nodded, ready to do whatever it took. 'I'll get you what you need. Money isn't an issue. I just want her free."
Whitman nodded. 'We'll do our best. But be ready, this will take time. The media is watching, and people are already against Victoria. We have a hard road ahead."
Louis stood and shook Whitman's hand. 'Thank you, Charles. I trust you."
Whitman shook back. 'We'll fight hard, Mr. Sebastian. You have my word."
After the meeting, Louis was back in his office, looking at the city again. He had hired the best lawyers, but worries still nagged at him. What if it wasn't enough? What if he couldn't save Victoria?
His phone buzzed, breaking his thoughts. It was Claire.
'Louis, there's been a new update," Claire said urgently. 'They just released a statement saying Barry wasn't killed recently. The autopsy says he died months ago, but they found his body yesterday."
Louis's heart raced. 'Months? But Victoria was with me. She couldn't have done it."
'That's what they're claiming," Claire said. 'But they say they found emails and texts linking her to Barry during that time."
Louis gripped his phone, angry. 'She didn't do that. Someone is framing her. It has to be Amaya."
Claire hesitated. 'If it is, she's hiding it well. We need solid proof, or this will get worse."
Louis hung up and paced his office. Victoria had been with him for months, focused on their life together. The idea that she could have been secretly planning Barry's murder was ridiculous.
He opened his laptop and searched for any messages from the past months. Hours passed as he looked through emails, texts, and calendar appointments.
Then, he saw a message from an unknown number. It was short and strange, but the date matched the timeline the police mentioned: 'Meet me at the usual spot. We need to settle this. B."
Louis stared at the screen, realizing this could be the evidence against her.
But Victoria never mentioned meeting Barry. If she had, he would have known. Unless… someone had been setting her up all along.
He called Whitman. 'Charles, I found something," he said urgently. 'There's a message on Victoria's phone from an unknown number, linked to Barry. I don't think she saw it. We need to find out who it belongs to."
Whitman sounded focused. 'Good job, Louis. Send me the details. If we can show someone else using her phone, we might have a breakthrough."
Louis quickly sent the message, his mind racing. He was sure Amaya was behind this, trying to make Victoria look guilty. Proving it would be hard, but he had to try.
'Hang in there, Victoria," Louis whispered to himself. 'We're going to get through this."
Days passed as Louis worked hard with Whitman and his team, going over every detail of the case. He barely slept, focused on getting Victoria out of jail.
One evening, as Louis dug through files, Claire rushed in, looking excited.
'Louis, you need to see this," she said, holding a laptop. 'One of our tech guys traced that unknown number. It's from a burner phone, but it pinged near Amaya's apartment a lot."
Louis's eyes widened. 'Are you sure?"
Claire nodded. 'Yes. It's not enough to convict, but it links her to the situation."
Louis felt hopeful. It wasn't the final proof they needed, but it was a real connection to Amaya. He called Whitman immediately.
'We've got her," Louis said, filled with determination. 'This is the lead we needed."
Whitman responded carefully but positively. 'It's a good start, Louis. I'll have my team follow up. We need to stay focused; the trial is coming up quickly."
As Louis hung up, he felt a new sense of purpose. The path ahead was still unclear, but now he felt like they were getting closer to the truth. Victoria's freedom was within reach, and he wouldn't stop until she was safe.
The fight was far from over, but Louis was ready. With the best lawyers and his strong determination, he would see this through to the end.
