A Family in Mourning
The air was filled with the smell of lilies and roses at the Sebastian estate, where friends and family came together for Malcolm Sebastian's memorial service. It was a sunny day, but everyone felt sad.
Louis stood at the edge of the gathering, looking at a big portrait of his father. Malcolm's smile seemed to fill the space, but now he was gone, leaving a big emptiness.
Elizabeth Sebastian walked quietly among the guests, accepting condolences with a nod. She looked calm but distant, feeling like a part of her was missing without Malcolm. She stopped by Louis and lightly touched his arm.
"Are you okay, Louis?" she asked softly.
Louis nodded, but he felt more complicated inside. "I'm trying," he said. "It just doesn't feel real."
Elizabeth squeezed his arm, sharing his sadness. "I know. I keep waiting for him to walk in and tell us we're doing everything wrong." She smiled a little. "He always knew what to do."
Louis swallowed hard. "He always had the answers. Now... I don't know what to do."
Elizabeth leaned in closer. "You don't need all the answers right now, Louis. We're just trying to move forward, one step at a time."
Louis appreciated her words, but he still felt a deep ache inside. He looked around at the guests, many of whom were familiar faces, but they felt like strangers in this moment. Their kind words only reminded him that his father was gone.
As the service started, the speaker talked about Malcolm's achievements and the impact he made.
But to Louis, the words felt empty. He couldn't stop thinking about his father's last days, the hospital, and how Malcolm had tried to do the right thing until the end. It reminded him of the pain of losing him.
After the service, guests shared stories about Malcolm. Louis found himself surrounded by people offering comfort, but it didn't help. He nodded politely, but his thoughts were elsewhere-filled with what-ifs.
Victoria approached him quietly, holding his hand and offering comfort. "How are you doing?" she asked softly.
Louis shook his head. "I don't know, Victoria. I'm trying to keep it together, but I feel like I'm not really here."
Victoria understood. "It's okay to feel lost. Your dad would be so proud of you and everything you've done."
Louis looked at her, feeling both grateful and pained. "I just wish he was here. He should have been by your side in court, not in a hospital bed."
Victoria hugged him as he finally let his tears flow. He leaned on her shoulder as he cried, feeling the grief he had been holding back. Victoria cried with him, sharing in the sorrow.
"I don't know how to do this without him," Louis admitted. "He was the one I always looked up to."
Victoria looked him in the eyes. "You're stronger than you think. You've done so much, and he's still with you in every step you take. You're not alone. I'm here, your mom's here... we're all here for you."
Louis nodded, feeling a little comforted. But the emptiness remained. He looked over at Elizabeth, who seemed tired from her sadness. He knew he needed to be strong for her now that Malcolm was gone.
As guests began to leave, Louis and Elizabeth thanked each one. Louis tried to focus, but his mind drifted back to his father's voice and laughter, the way he made everything seem easier.
When the last guest had left, Elizabeth turned to Louis, her eyes filled with tears. "It's just us now," she said softly. "I keep thinking he'll come back and tell us to stop fussing."
Louis nodded, feeling the weight of their loss. "Yeah. It doesn't feel real."
They stood in silence for a moment, sharing their grief. Elizabeth took Louis's hand. "We'll get through this. Your father was strong, and you have that strength too, Louis. I see it every day."
Louis squeezed her hand, feeling a connection. "I wish I had more time with him. There's so much I never got to say."
Elizabeth nodded, tears falling. "I know. But he knew how much you loved him and how proud he was of you."
They stood together, the garden quiet around them. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the flowers Malcolm loved. Louis wished he could turn back time for one more conversation with his father.
But as night fell, Louis realized those moments were gone. All he had were memories and lessons from Malcolm. Though the future felt uncertain, he knew he had to keep moving forward to honor his father's legacy.
Elizabeth released his hand. "Let's go inside. We have a lot to figure out, but we'll do it together."
Louis nodded, following her inside. The pain of loss was still there, but with each step, he felt a spark of determination to keep going, just as his father would have wanted.
As they closed the door, the Sebastian family took their first steps into a world without Malcolm. It felt emptier, but his influence would still guide them.
And in that, Louis found some comfort. He wasn't alone. He had his mother, Victoria, and the lessons his father taught him. Each day, he would strive to live up to the man who had been his hero. It wouldn't be easy, but for Malcolm, he would try.
